Cape Girardeau: America's Solar Eclipse Destination

A total solar eclipse is an awesome spectacle that is quite rare. The last one to touch the United States was in July of 1991. The next won't be until August 21, 2017. That solar eclipse will pass through Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Not only that, but the next solar eclipse will also visit Cape Girardeau in 2024. That's two rare total solar eclipses happening in one place only 7 years apart. It is quite a coincidence that makes Cape Girardeau the Solar Eclipse Capital of the United States. Start making your plans now to visit the area during each of the two eclipses. Thousands of people will be there enjoying the wonderous effects of the moon passing in front of the sun.

Message from the Mayor:
I have recently been made aware of the 2 rare spectacles that will occur in the years of 2017 & 2024. This will indeed provide our city with an unusual tourism opportunity and we look forward to making plans for those dates in our great city of Cape Girardeau, Missouri.

Mayor Harry Rediger

Cape Girardeau Debate

Is Cape Girardeau the best place to watch the eclipses?

Loading

Yes, Total Eclipse Capital of the US

No, the eclipses last a bit longer in other places

theoxingyi says:

I am a fan of getting up high to watch stuff like this. I lived in the mountains of Santa Fe for a while and the lack of ozone makes everything clearer.

Margo_Arrowsmith says:

Well, what else is going on there?

I'm envious of those that have had the opportunity to see a solar eclipse. But I have had a total eclipse of the heart.

I haven't been lucky enough to witness one but I am going to try and catch the next one if possible.

I well remember the quality of light outside my country home, with many large windows, how the eclipse gave an otherworldly appearance to our landscape. It was thrilling
