Cape Town - South Africa's scenic mother city!

Places to go and things to do in Cape Town

Do you want to travel to Cape Town? Great idea!
Cape Town must rank among the most scenic cities in the world! And it's one of the most beautiful cities in South Africa.
Ok, so I'm biased because I live here. But let's face it, this place is really picturesque.
What's more, it's rich in history, heritage and culture.

There really is a lot to see and many things you could do in this place! Let me point out a few spots you could visit and things you could to do! And I'd like to show you a few of my photos as well.

A view from the sea...

The photo above shows Cape Town as seen a way out from the sea. You can see Table Mountian in the middle, Devil's peak on its left, Signal Hill in front of it, and Lion's Head towards the right of it.

V&A Waterfront

The V&A Waterfront has a lot to offer. You could easily spend a whole day, or even a few days here. From restaurants, shops and curios, to boat trips, arts, culture and the Two Oceans Aquarium. Not a boring place!

Interesting visitors to the V&A Waterfront

Interesting vessels sometimes dock at the V&A Waterfront! Such as the ARA Libertad that visited for a few days at the end of April 2008. Read more about this vessel.

Lion's Head, Signal Hill, Green Point & Sea Point

Lion's Head lies to the right of Table Mountain, as you look to it from the front (i.e. the
harbour or sea) (middle of the photo above). Signal Hill and Lion's Rump lie in front of Lion's Head (towards the left on this photo). Green Point and Sea Point are below Signal Hill (front and right on the photo).

This area is near the city centre, and offers lots of accommodation. It's also close to Table Mountain, if you want to go up the cableway. Or, if you have lots of energy, you could walk to the top! The rest of us will get you at the top of the cableway!

Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve

Including Cape Point

The photo above is of Smitswinkel Bay, inside the The Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve at the southern end of the Cape Peninsula. Cape Point is right at the tip, but if you thought that was the southern tip of Africa, guess what? You're wrong! That honour is reserved for L'Aghulas or Cape Agulhas.

Simon's Town

Simon's Town is situated on the False Bay side of the Cape Peninsula. It boasts a harbour for both naval and private vessels.

There are a number of interesting places you could visit here. This includes museums, shops and last but not least, the penguins at Boulders!

Read more about Simon's Town.

Fish Hoek

Fish Hoek is nesstled between the mountains on the False Bay side of the Cape Peninsula. It boasts a lovely white beach with soft sand. Delightful to put your toes into! And nice if you're in need of a serious tan!

Read more about Fish Hoek.

Tygerberg Nature Reserve

Tygerberg Nature Reserve is on the Tygerberg hills in the Northern Suburbs. It lies between Plattekloof on the one side, and Loevenstein, Welgemoed and Welgedacht on the other. You'll see the hills on your left as you head North on the N1. To get to it, turn of at the Mike Pienaar Boulevard / Jip de Jager Drive (M16) offramp. Turn up Jip de Jager, towards Welgemoed. Watch for signboards pointing towards the Tyberberg Nature Reserve (which is towards your left).

It's relatively quiet, and a nice place to go walking, hiking, birdwatching and taking photos! From the top you have a panoramic view of a large part of Cape Town from relatively high up. The photo here was taken from the Reserve, looking towards Table Mountain. Inside the Reserve you could also visit the Kristo Pienaar Environmental Educational Centre.

Table Mountain

Table Mountain is the trademark or icon of Cape Town, if you will. It's certainly worth going up the mountain if you ever get to visit this city. If you are adventurous and energetic, you could walk up. Else, take the cableway!

Check out the official Table Mountain Aerial Cableway website. They have some really awesome pictures!

Weather

What's the outlook?

If you're coming to check out our great sights, you want the right kind of weather, don't you? So you need an idea of our climate. No good coming for a suntan during our rainy season, that's for sure!

Well, Cape Town is a winter rainfall area. Winter runs from about May to September, and summer from November to March. In summer it's normally warm and dry, but it can get rather hot at times! See Wikipedia for more info.

2010 Soccer World Cup: Greenpoint Stadium

The 2010 Soccer World Cup is to take place in South Africa. Cape Town will also have it's share of soccer matches!

Greenpoint Stadium has specifically been erected for this purpose. It's slated to host the following matches: six first-round, one second-round, one quarter-final and one semifinal match.

See the following for more information on the Greenpoint stadium.

Above is a photo of the stadium being built, as viewed from Signal Hill. It was taken during April 2009.

Keep your safety in mind

Ensure your visit is a happy and enjoyable one

Like every city in the world, unfortunately Cape Town does have its share of crime. Be aware and be careful. As a tourist you could be vulnerable. To be forewarned, is to be forearmed. But do enjoy the stay!

Crime that you should watch out for:

Credit Card fraud:

NEVER let your credit card out of your sight. Some unscrupulous waiters at restaurants and entertainment venues make themselves guilty of Credit Card skimming. Treat a credit card like you would cash! Also beware of card swopping at ATM machines.

Internet Banking fraud:
Be very, very careful if you do any internet banking from an Internet Cafe. Your username and password for your Internet Banking account could get stolen. Criminals use spyware and key-loggers to steal details like your username and password.

If you must use an Internet Cafe to do Internet Banking, may I suggest the following. Use Character Map in Windows to select characters by clicking them with your mouse. Then copy and paste them into the relevant boxes (i.e. username and password). But don't type your details. And be very sure that nobody is watching you as you do this!

Table Mountain painting

My dad did the painting of Table Mountain shown here. It's a view of the mountain from Table View, West Coast, framed by sand dunes. This one's already sold, but you may want to see some of his other works that are still available.
