Of these many iconic fixtures of safety- Cape Hatteras located on the coast of North Carolina right along the Atlantic coast. Here, two major current collide creating dangerous turbulent waters, known to many as the "Graveyard of the Atlantic." Construction and Design
The first lighthouse built to protect these courageous sailors was in 1803 after Congress allocated $44,000 for the construction of a lighthouse on the head land of Cape Hatteras in 1797.This was soon replaced in 1870 by the 198 feet tall Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, at a cost of about $167,000.
From ground to tip of lightning rod- Cape Hatteras Lighthouse remains the tallest lighthouse in the US, and the tallest brick lighthouse in the world.

20th Century
The National Park Service acquired ownership of the lighthouse when it was abandoned in 1935; and throughout the next 15 years, when in 1950 was allocated safe for use.Then, in 1950 the US Coast Guard gained ownership of this iconic lighthouse.
In 1999, the massive lighthouse was moved inland to keep from the receding shorelines. This is one of the several operational lighthouses along North Carolina's coast.
It is maintained by the US Coast Guard and the National Park Service.
