Cape Verde in the 21st Century

Western Africa, group of islands in the North Atlantic Ocean, west of Senegal.  Cape Verde comprises 10 volcanic islands.

The islands of the Cape Verde archipelago are windy, hilly, dry - almost lunar - and fairly sleepy. But there's beauty in them thar parched hills. And some of the islands are actually lush. There's good diving and hiking, lively nightlife and plenty of quiet corners to hide away in.

Birders often see the Cream-coloured Courser while visiting Cape Verde

The Cream-colored Courser, Cursorius cursor, is a wader in the pratincole and courser family, Glareolidae.

Although classed as waders, these are birds of dry open country, preferably semi-desert, where they typically hunt their insect prey by running on the ground.

These coursers are found in Canary Islands, north Africa and southwest Asia. Their two eggs are laid in a ground scrape. They are partially migratory, with northern and northwestern birds wintering in India, Arabia and across the southern edge of the Sahara. Some birds also breed in the southern desert regions in northwestern India and Pakistan.Rahmani,Asad R; Manakadan,Ranjit (1989): Breeding records of Creamcoloured Courser Cursorius cursor cursor (Latham) from India. J. Bombay Nat. Hist. Soc. 86(3), 447-448.

They are rare north of the breeding range, but this species has occurred as far away as Finland, Ireland and Great Britain.

These birds have long legs and long wings. They have slightly downcurved bills. The body plumage is sandy in colour, fading to whitish on the lower belly. The upperwing primary feathers and the underwings are black. The crown and nape are grey, and there is a black eyestripe and white supercilium.

In flight this species resembles a pratincole, with its relaxed wingbeats, pointed wings and dark underwings.

A blend of Portugal, a dash of Brazil, a hint of American and a slice of Africa.

Cape Verde is an elusive mix of everything: A blend of Portugal, a dash of Brazil, a hint of American and a slice of Africa. Once known as the Forgotten Islands, the archipelago has emerged to offer everything from isolated windswept beaches, mountainous misty forests, giant salt flats, and black volcanic lava flows to top-of-the line luxury hotels with the latest technology as well as small-town pensions in remote villages, rich in tradition. The most inviting aspect of this country is the charm, candor and genuine hospitality of its people, and the vibrant, rich diversity of each island. They may be known as the Forgotten Islands, but they are anything but forgettable.
