Vintage Cap Guns: Baby Boomer Toys

Growing up in the 1950's provided children fewer choices of play than is now available within the 21st century. Back in the 50's and 60's, without the "intrusion" of computers and video games, children were much more physically active. Some of the favorite pastimes of those baby-boomers were playing games of "Cowboys & Indians", "Cops & Robbers" or the indulgence within Medieval-type "conflicts" and/or "Spy" games.

To partake in such "games", many children were quite concerned about acquiring the appropriate attire and "weaponry" necessary for such endeavors. "Weapons" i.e., cap guns and cap rifles, rubber knives, swords, spears, bows & arrows, etc., as well as a multitude of suitable clothing options and paraphernalia were available at many retail outlets.

Certain television serials, such as "Paladin" (Western), "The Untouchables" (Crime), "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." (Spy-oriented), "Robin Hood" (Medieval), added fuel to children's interest in "good-guy/bad-guy" games.

Without a doubt, those times were very enjoyable to me when I was a child. And as many times as my friends and me "killed" each other, we didn't really die. And I don't think playing such games made us any worse off than the "couch-potato-generation" of kids today. ###

Roy Rogers Cap Guns - Top Picks for Collectors

Many toy cap guns from the 1950s and 60s were branded with celebrity cowboy names -- Gene Autry, Hop-a-long Cassidy, Bonanza, Kit Carson, Buffalo Bill, Davy Crockett, The Rifleman and many more. One of the most popular for collectors today is Roy Rogers.

1950's Roy Rogers Toy Cap Guns

This Kilgore Roy Rogers toy cap gun and leather holster are excellent examples of 1950s Roy Rogers toy collectibles. The cap gun grips have tan and chocolate swirl "Trigger" horsehead grips. Roy Roger's name appears beneath the toy gun's cylinder. The leather holster has rivets with the "RR" logo. This set is for sale on eCRATER at Sheridan Collectibles.

The 1955 Gold Classy Model R-60 Roy Rogers cap gun is rare and highly collectible. The cap gun's elaborate engraving includes "RR" and "Roy Rogers" in script lettering. The grips have Roy on a rearing "Trigger". Even with the hammer missing, the cap gun pictured is an excellent addition to a collector's display.

This 1955 Kilgore Roy Rogers toy cap gun has beautiful white pearl swirl "Trigger" horsehead grips. The cap gun breaks in the middle for inserting roll caps. Roy Roger's name appears in the engraving beneath the faux cylinder.

Check out the derringer pulled on Paladin in this video. The 1960 Halco Hide-a-way Derringer toy cap gun with its white pearl handles looks strikingly familiar! So does the 1960 Halco Swivel Double Derringer with the red grips.

Marshal Matt Dillon in Gunsmoke: Famous for Quick Draw

Inspired by famous television cowboy heroes, we strapped on our cap gun holsters and practiced quick draw. The 1960 Hubley Western cap gun was an extremely popular toy for make-believe shoot outs. Pictured here is a matched pair available for purchase on eCRATER at Sheridan Collectibles.

This collection of Mattel Shootin' Shell cap gun toys are available for purchase on eCRATER at Sheridan Collectibles.

Agent Zero Secret Frontier Defender Toys

This is an excellent example of mid-1960s Mattel Shootin' Shell cap gun toys. The toy bullets for Shootin' Shell cap guns were in two pieces, a brass shell and a gray plastic projectile. They used Greenie Stick Em caps.

This particular 1965 Mattel Snub-nose .38 Shootin' Shell Secret Frontier Defender toy cap gun is in black finish with a gold revolving cylinder. The grips are walnut grained with a near-perfect Agent Zero decal on left grip top. Mattel produced "Durahyde" holsters for these cap guns. The cap rifle shown in the photo is a 1965 Mattel Agent Zero Rapid Fire .38 Special measuring 26" long.

The Rifleman Cap Gun Rifle

The 1958 Rifleman "Flip Special" manufactured by Hubley is one of the most sought after character toy cap gun rifles fetching in excess of $350.00.

The Untouchables defined "cops and robbers" games of the baby boomer generation. The Mattel Shootin' Shell snub-nose .38 toy cap gun was their choice of weapon.

The Man from U.N.C.L.E.

Television shows like The Man from U.N.C.L.E. could have been the inspiration for this toy Mauser cap gun made by Coibel.

Robin Hood

What baby boomer doesn't remember Robin Hood and his markmanship with a bow and arrow?

Do you collect toy cap guns?

If so, please tell us about your prized collection.

My favorite toy cap guns from the 1960s include The Rifleman by Hubley because of Chuck Conner's rapid firing in the opening scene of the television series. My Mattel Shootin' Shell snub-nose .38 and Mattel Tommy-Burst remind me of playing cops and robbers.

Nothing wrong with that. And I think Johnathan Winters is hilariously funny,...I've always thought that since I was a kid.

I don't collect the cap guns but I sure remember them and the TV series that inspired them. I always liked Roy Rogers and the Maverick brothers.
