Google Finance
Detroit's auto makers on Tuesday presented wide-ranging restructuring plans to Congress in hopes of qualifying for a combined $34 billion in low-cost loans from the federal government. The auto makers, struggling to remain viable as they rapidly burn through cash, also announced steep declines in U.S. sales for November, underscoring the desperate situation facing the industry.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said late Tuesday that bankruptcy isn't an option for the Big Three auto companies and that she believes the companies would ultimately be rescued. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said he hoped to move legislation that could provide loans to the auto makers as soon as Monday, though he stopped short of making promises.
