Captain Hook Pirate Costume

Getting hooky with it

If you fancy dressing as a pirate on Halloween, then one of the best ways to go is with one of the most memorable and feared pirate characters ever: Captain Hook.

Many who know the story of Peter Pan knows Captain Hook is Peter Pan's arch enemy. With his menacing hook for a hand and snarling demeanor, Captain Hook intimidates all who dare cross his path.

Now, you can breathe new life into the character by donning the Captain Hook costume for Halloween. Whether trick-or-treating or attending a Halloween party, this costume is always sure to please, especially when accompanied by an attitude as equally intimidating as the costume itself.

For those of you who may be unfamiliar with the story, Captain Hook was the much-feared captain of the Jolly Roger brig and lord of the Neverland pirate village and harbor. It is said he was Blackbeard's boatswain and the only man to ever rattle the nerves of Long John Silver, the antagonist pirate in the classic story Treasure Island.

He fashioned an iron hook to replace his right hand after Peter Pan cut it off and a crocodile ate it. According to the story, the crocodile like the taste of the hand so much he followed Captain Hook around waiting for an opportunity to feast on him some more, but much to Hook's luck, the crocodile had also swallowed a clock, and the ticking of the clock in the crocodile's belly always warned Captain Hook of the crocodile's presence.

To Get the Hook Look

hookHook obsesses in his hatred of Peter Pan, blaming Peter Pan for the loss of his hand and having great disdain for Peter Pan's cockiness. Hook longs for the day when he can make Peter Pan and his band of Lost Boys walk the plank of the Jolly Roger.

For an authentic Captain Hook look, you'll want to sport a long black, red or blue coat, knee breeches and pantaloons or trousers tucked into black boots. You'll also need a frilly cravat, a feathered hat and, of course, a hook to cover your right hand. In addition, you'll want to crown your head with a long, black curly wig and black pirate captain's hat, and also have at your side a sword. Buy pirate costumes for adults and kids here.

The Last Touch

For the full effect, you may want to go the extra mile and practice an English accent, as Captain Hook had one and, unlike most pirates, was, according to the way author J.M. Barrie implied in his beloved story, educated at a private school in England and was said to have come from a privileged upbringing.

So there you have it! The low-down on one of the most famous and colorful fictional pirates of our time! For a rambunctious and adventurous Halloween costume, you just can't go wrong with Captain Hook!

We all know the traditional costumes like the French maid costume, witch,  disco costume, devil and vampire.
