He's Boldly Gone Where No Man Had Before

Captain Kirk has been in my life forever.  Star Trek is one of the first television shows I can remember watching.  Thank heavens that's a lot cooler to admit these days - it used to be something I had to hide from my friends lest they try to put me in a rehab program.  But, now I am allowed to embrace my quirky geekiness and I believe Captain James Tiberius Kirk is part of the reason I ended up this way.  (That's my story and I'm sticking to it!)

Captain Kirk At A Glance

Captain James Tiberius Kirk is a fictional character in the Star Trek universe. He was the main character in the original Star Trek television series and the films based on it, played by William Shatner. In 2007, J. J. Abrams announced that Kirk would be a character in the upcoming Star Trek film, although he did not say who will play the character.

Kirk commanded two starships named Enterprise: the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) and the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-A).

A Short History Of Captain Kirk

James T. Kirk has the distinction of being the youngest captain in Starfleet to date at 34 and the first captain to bring his starship back relatively intact after a five-year mission. And, even though he often fought the system within which he had to operate, no one could argue his successes. He has teh dubious record of being involved in 17 different temporal violations, a career record which still stands. Though a romantic at heart, Kirk never formed a lasting, romantic relationship due to his devotion to career - especially during his captaincy of the U.S.S. Enterprise. Kirk's historically rapid rise to a captaincy and command of a loyal and respectful 430-member crew are reflected in the awards and commendations he had garnered by 2267, including the Palm Leaf of the Axanar Peace Mission, the Grankite Order of Tactics, a Class of Excellence award, the Prantares Ribbon of Commendation, First and Second Class, the Medal of Honor, a Silver Palm with Cluster, the Starfleet Citation for Conspicuous llantry, the Karagite Order of Heroism and several Awards of Valor.

It was on his first Enterprise that he assembled a crew and forged friendships with fellow officers who would themselves become Starfleet legends: First Officer and Science Officer Spock, Dr. Leonard McCoy, engineer Montgomery Scott, Hikaru Sulu, Pavel Chekov, Uhura. Even after the end of their five-year mission, it almost became a cliché that only Kirk and his crew could save the Federation from a new crisis - or at least Earth. That is exactly what happened in the case of V'Ger in 2271 and the whale-calling aliens in 2286.
Kirk had accepted a promotion to admiral in charge of fleet operations upon his initial return, but accepted a reduction to captain when he regained command of the Enterprise in 2271 to thwart V'Ger, relieving Will Decker after recommending him for the "center seat." Some 14 years later after another five-year command mission and a return to Academy teaching, he used Spock's cadet ship to thwart a grab by his onetime nemesis Khan Noonian Singh for the experimental Genesis device. That mission in turn set off a chain of events that led to Kirk's reunion with Carol Marcus and his son David, David's death, Spock's sacrifice to save the ship and his storage of his katra in McCoy's mind, and the discovery that Spock's body had regenerated on the Genesis Planet.

Three Reasons To Love Captain Kirk

  1. He always knows how to save the world.
  2. He looks really good in those boots.
  3. He was not immune to the "cutesie" factor of Tribbles.

Captain Kirk's Crew Members

(...sources include Wikipedia & StarTrek.com)
  • Spock (aka Mr. Spock) serves as the science officer and first officer of the USS Enterprise, under Captain James T. Kirk. He is one of the most enduring characters from American 1960s television. He is one of the few aliens in the permanent cast: half-Vulcan, half-Human. His personal struggle between the Vulcan logical self and his human emotional self is the centerpiece of the character and created some evocative drama.
  • Dr. Leonard H. ("Bones") McCoy, played by DeForest Kelley, and is the Chief Medical Officer aboard the Enterprise. Nicknamed 'Bones' by his longtime friend and commander, Captain James T. Kirk, McCoy replaced Mark Piper as chief medical officer in 2266 on one of the ship's five-year missions but clearly became the most renowned. By that first year he had already won the commendations of Legion of Honor, awards of valor, and was decorated by Starfleet Surgeons. His temperament was sometimes argumentative, a cynic's outer crustiness masking deep caring beneath the surface. His "old South" roots led to the old-time physician manner of doctoring, with a Southern accent that was most apparent when under stress. He distrusts transporter technology and travels by shuttlecraft whenever possible.
  • Montgomery ("Scotty") Scott, holds the rank of Lieutenant Commander and serves as the Enterprise's Chief Engineer and Second Officer. He was born in Linlithgow, Scotland, and speaks with a thick Lowland Scottish accent. As an engineer, Scott retains a reputation as a "miracle worker", with no known equal in the Star Trek universe. He is renowned for his technical skill, knowledge, determination and resolve. Scotty often acts as the solver of plot-critical situations, utilizing his expansive knowledge and ingenuity. His solutions are almost always creative and unconventional, dramatically effective, and crucial to the resolution of plot developments.
Though his job is Chief Engineer of the Enterprise, Scotty is also an experienced command officer. Being Second Officer on the Enterprise (i.e. third-in-command), he takes acting command of the ship when Captain Kirk and Commander Spock are both unavailable. On one such occasion, when Kirk and Spock are trapped on an alien world, Scott uses the ship's power to shut down the planet's electrical grid for a few seconds, enabling Enterprise crewmen to rescue Kirk and Spock without violating the Prime Directive. Kirk places a commendation in Scott's personnel record for this innovative tactic.
  • Uhura, played by Nichelle Nichols, serves as the communications officer on the USS Enterprise and the USS Enterprise-A. She is significant as one of the first major black characters on an American television series. Uhura is Bantu. She is from the United States of Africa and speaks Swahili. Uhura served as communications officer aboard the Enterprise on one of its early five-year missions, under the command of James T. Kirk. It is not unusual to see her rewire or repair her own communications board during a crisis. In Swahili the name of Uhura, a striking black woman, translates to "freedom," and she speaks that language fluently. She also has a singing voice and was known to entertain members of the U.S.S. Enterprise crew, accompanying herself on the Vulcan harp. Uhura has shown some romantic interest in Scotty, but it was never pursued. After her memory was wiped in 2267 by the space probe Nomad, Uhura spent considerable time
relearning the huge pieces of information the probe had destroyed.
  • Hikaru Sulu, played by George Takei, was born in San Francisco and is of Asian descent. He served as helm officer throughout the rest of the series, during which he held the rank of lieutenant. Sulu was an active hobbyist with interests including fencing, botany, and the martial arts of his native culture; in fact, when the helmsman was infected with the Psi 3000 virus in 2266 he threatened the bridge with his foil. Another of Sulu's hobbies was old-style hand guns, although he had never managed to find a "Police Special" for his collection. He is also an accomplished pilot of craft from many eras and cultures, piloting with little warm-up both an antique 20th century Earth helicopter and a Klingon Bird-of-Prey.
  • Pavel Andreievich Chekov, is a young and naïve ensign who first appeared on-screen in the original series' second season as the Enterprise's navigator. Chekov also substitutes for Mr. Spock at the science officer station when necessary. Chekov was the navigator on the original U.S.S. Enterprise under the command of James T. Kirk. An only child, his youthful career was so full of brash pronouncements of Russian ethnic pride and accomplishments he became a good-natured joke among his superiors. Although he was always a promising officer with a career to bear it out, the young Chekov was prone to hot-heated actions and romantic attachments. While attending Starfleet Academy his involvement with fellow cadet Irina Galliulin broke off when she dropped out of the service before graduation in ain for its structure. Years later they met again when she and other Eden-seekers with Dr. Sevrin were aboard.
Following the end of his first five-year mission, Chekov was promoted to lieutenant when he was assigned as security chief aboard the refit U.S.S. Enterprise.
