Kirk of the starship Enterprise!
As much as any other figure in Star Trek Franchise, the tall tales about James T. Kirk's exploits over a 40-year career are as numerous as the official record - and probably closer to the truth in some instances.
Captain Kirk's renown began by becoming the youngest captain in Starfleet to date at 34 and the first captain to bring his starship back relatively intact after a five-year mission, having also gained a reputation as an independent maverick, whose success couldn't be argued with, even though he often bucked the system. A Brief History of Captain James T. Kirk and Star Trek
Why Captain Kirk is The Man For Halloween This Year
Although excluded from the show's original pilot, Captain James Tiberius Kirk, Exploded with a vengence in the second pilot. Well that is not really true, Star Trek and Captain Kirk were the victims of poor ratings and evil critics, during the original release of the television series.Eventually in 1969, Star Trek, being considered a failure, was unceremoniously cancelled. However, a funny thing happened on the way to TV purgatory, the show was released into syndication. Many new, younger viewers were exposed to the exploits of Captain Kirk, and his best friend Mr. Spock. These viewers changed a lot of people's minds in the entertainment industry, as Star Trek merchandise from action figures to artificial pointed ears started to sell like hot cakes.
The popularity of Captain Kirk grew so much throughout the 1970's, that a reincarnation of the show started to be planned. There were some issues surrounding this so they decided to release an Star Trek movie in 1979. This was only the first of many movies, TV spin offs, and new Star Trek Characters.
However, for all of the success of the Star Trek franchise over the years, Captain Kirk remains the number one cultural icon produced by the show. I clearly remember watching the show every day after school at 5 o'clock, and then using my Kirk moves to beat up my brother. Kirk provided a positive role model for all youngsters to aspire to.
