This funny-looking creature is the Capybara, and this South American mammal has the distinction of being the world's largest rodent, with the larger specimens weighing over 150 lbs. Sometimes they are described as being like giant guinea pigs. They are good swimmers who often live in marshes and ponds.

I once saw some when I was on a visit to Disney World, where they had some in one of their nature habitats. I thought they looked like someone had stuck the back legs of a jack rabbit onto one of my pet guinea pigs and then fed it super-grow vitamins!

What Do Capybaras Eat?

Capybaras eat mostly grasses but will also eat some water plants and some wild vegetables. An adult capybara can eat between six and eight pounds of grass in a single day!
