Car-crash Squidoo Lens Building
Ranked #37,115 in Entertainment, #461,614 overall
Hi! I'm ScotsLass, and I am a computer illiterate.....
Give me a standard form to fill in, and guaranteed I'll mess it up. The simpler the form, the easier I find it to get wrong, misinterpret, fill the box with the wrong information, whatever. I either overthink it, or don't really pay attention. Give me a form that needs two items of information, eg my name and address, and I'll mess it up!
I have already spent hours looking at "How to build your first Squidoo lens " lenses, and I'm still lost.
Did I mention that I'm also computer illiterate?
I got hooked up to the Internet almost three months ago, and have already learned how to blog (hopefully I'll figure out how to add a link to that somewhere along the line!), which I'm pretty pleased about. But my laptop was being very slow, so I took a friend's advice, and deleted some programmes that didn't seem to be doing much. The result was that my computer got even more slow. Looks like I've disabled some stuff it needed - Woops! The phrase "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing" springs to mind!
Anyway, I'm waiting for a friend of mine, who actually knows about computers, to come visit for the weekend and sort it out for me.
But, meanwhile, I decided that the best thing to do was just to jump-in and try it, documenting the results as I go along.
Hopefully, it will be helpful for any other newbie "dummies" like me out there (there MUST be some?....... No? Just me then. Okay, I can live with that).
Module #2
The story so far...
Okay, so to start, I clicked on the "Create Lens" button on my dashboard (even I couldn't mess that one up!).There are 3 steps to creating a lens:
1/. LENS TITLE: I chose my lens title, "Car-crash Squidoo Lens Building" as I am predicting that this is more-or-less what it will look like once I've finished, and before I can get advice on how to rectify it!
One of the things I have managed to grasp, is that the LENS TITLE is the only thing you cannot undo - so choose carefully.
There are many "How To..." lenses that highlight this fact (once I do the "linking" knowledge, some of these will appear as links here).
2/. CATAGORY: I chose "Humor" as I felt it would be misleading to put it anywhere else (especially in the "How To..." section, but that might change, as my lens grows in popularity, with thousands of like-dumb-minded newbie lensbuilders finally feeling that they have found someone to identify with! - You never know......*sigh*).
3/. TAGS: Tags are the keywords you attach to a lens (or a blog post, or a web page, etc) so that people can find your article using search engines (I'm not even going to begin to describe those!)
I chose "newbie help" ('cos you never know, someone may find this lens helpful!), "computer illiterate" and "overwhelming stupidity", ALL phrases I have personally used, with interesting results! I'll probably add more later.
That created my lens identity and URL (address), and took me into my lens building page (where I am now).
I chose the default setting for my lens design (not gonna even START messing with that one right now!).
I started at the start (!) in module 1 (the box of writing above this one).
I typed in the module title, and then wrote my introduction.
Then I added an image (a white question mark on a black background), which I have since decided isn't big enough, and tried to remove.
After several failed attempts, I have decided to leave it for now (I'll come back and change it later) and move onto module #2 - what you are now reading.
I reckon that's enough on module #2 - lets find out what's next!
Module #3
Great Stuff on Amazon
I'm looking at two options in the labels underneath the box in which I'm writing this.
One is labelled "Let Amazon Pick" which presumably does what it says on the tin (based on my Tag choice, apparantly. Should be fun to see what it comes up with!), and "Let Me Pick". I'm going to take the easy option for now, and let Amazon do it's thing! (Except that I've selected "books" under "product type" and "squidoo lens building" under search terms".)
Another tag below says "Display Options" - here goes....
Okay, I'm back! Just going to leave it on the default setting (it seems to know what it's doing).
Module #4
Images
Looks like I messed up the Amazon module (whatdidIdowrong???), so I'll come back to that (I believe this lens is developing a catchphrase!), and get on with telling you about IMAGES.there are lots of places to find free images on the web. "Free" meaning that you do not have to pay for the image/photo copyright (eg. you're not buying it outright) or a fee (royalties) for the use of it. Google the phrase "free images" and you'll get a list of sites where you can find images and photos to use for free. But DO check the "Terms of Use", as some images/photos require a fee even when they're listed as free, and some artists allow you to use an image/photo for free, but request that you link the image back to them (as a means of promoting their work). Seems fair, so be polite and do it when requested.
So far on this lens, I've used www.public-domain-photos.com and the USA Gov free image site. The photos are a bit random (to say the least!), and may not be related to what I'm writing about here (you don't say!) but images/photos seem to be quite an important feature in a lens to make it sparkly and attractive, so random and unrelated is b etter than none, in my book!
(Oh, and at point of writing, my image from module 1 has disappeared off somewhere....(I think it got bored).

Module #5
I'm nothing if not determined!
In the last few minutes (over an hour in reality!) I've learned that you can add mdules by selecting them from the "add modules shortcut" down on the right the "creation" page (somebody please write in if there is a correct name for this page!). AND there is also a nifty "drag and drop sort modules" box below that, so that you can easily organise the order in which your modules appear (even I can do it, so it MUST be easy!).I've also learned that images uploaded for your "introduction" module (the first box, at the top), will automatically appear in the LEFT of the module, but in follwing modules, will automatically appear in the RIGHT of the module.
AND I've learned that it is easy to get back in and edit modules, but there is no spellchecker that I can see (Wha....?)
Prediction
ScotsLass predicts:
That at least five people will read this lens and leave a comment! AND that this lens will improve drastically in a relatively short space of time (optomistic, but also nicely vague!).

Module #6
The crunch!
Okay. I've done all I'm going to do for now before I attempt to publish this.I've worked out the very, very basics (almost).
I've discovered that I cannot enlarge images on my laptop WITHOUT any form of photo-shop type programme (I don 't remember deleting it, but think it must have gone the way of the bin, or mebbe it just jumped ship!)
I've managed to mess-up the Amazone ad. module WITHOUT EVEN DOING ANYTHING! (there MUST be some kind of prize for that level of incompetence, surely?)
Time to see if I can get my lens published, and then rush over to NewbieCentral and get the lens paramedics in to see if anything can be saved from this wreckage!
If you're still here - thanks for sticking by me through the tough times - it's meant a lot to me!
My Blog "Life In A Scots Sitting Room"
I can actually DO the blog thing (well, most of it anyway!)
*WARNING* contains British style humour, some wit, and a dash of sarcasm (that's mainly in the comments section, though!).
Rush over and read it now, while it's quiet!
Reader Feedback
Please feel free to add ANY comment you like (as long as it doesn't comtain sweary-words, g-listed lens here). It would be sooo encouraging to know that someone has stopped by and glanced over this. Give me advice, insult my lack of computer ability, laugh with me, laugh AT me! JUST TALK TO ME, PLEASE!!! (does that come across as a tad desperate?).
PS. I WOULD have watched the "workshop video" at the top of the lens building page, OR downloaded the eBook for beginners but, you guessed it, can't get the vid to play (just a blank square with a little cross in the top left corner where video should be), and don't have enoigh memory left to download the eBook! - I didn't call myself "computer illiterate" fro nothing, you know!)

I started blogging very recently. I'm great at talking about any subject under the sun, and I love meeting new people and networking, so I thought I'd... more »
