How to Rent a Car in Formentera

If you are heading to Formentera you don't really need to rent a car, but just in case you decide to go ahead anyway I hope this article is of some use...

On Your Bike

The best way to see Formentera is by bicycle, and car rental should be limited to just a few days of your stay if you need it for a family picnic, or to visit one of the island's two plateaus (Far de la Mola and Cap de Barbaria).

The main road on the island is the PM-820, and this runs from Port de la Savina right down to Far de la Mola. It cuts a straight diagonal line from north-west to south-east. As you look back on it from El Pilar de la Mola you can see it dissect the island's narrow isthmus, with Platja de Tramuntana on one side, and Platja de Mitjorn on the other. For the safety of wandering holiday makers coming off the beaches, and out of the village cafes, do not speed on this road. It may look like a highway, but the masses of dead cats that pile up on at its side are testament to the fact that it should not be treated like an autobahn.

The second major road is the PMV-820-1 which runs south from the capital of Sant Francesc Xavier down to Cap de Barbaria. As you get closer to the lighthouse at the end of route the road gets narrower, and you will need to slow down to allow any oncoming traffic to pass.

Don't Bring Your Own

The PMV-820-2 runs along the eastern side of the inland lagoon of Estany Pudent. If you are going to rent a car then a good route is to drive from Cap de Barbaria to Sant Francesc Xavier, then take the loop around Estany Pudent. This will take you past Platja des Pujols, and through Sant Ferran de ses Roques. You can then turn left out of Sant Ferran to get back on the PM-820 and once back on the PM820, and drive to the desolation of Far de la Mola.

If you are just staying on Formentera for a short time, then it is not worth bringing your own car over. The cost and hassle of taking it on the ferry are not worth it when it is so easy to hire a small car here. The Formentera car rental options are extensive with everything from a Renault Twingo to a Land Rover Defender available. Most of the roads on Formentera are narrow and best negotiated by bicycle. You get to enjoy the sense of nature and preserve the ecological balance. Outside on the PM-820, PM-820-1, and PM-820-2 you really shouldn't need to do too much driving.
