My wife and I have been married 50 years and we have purchased numerous cars during that time. I can tell you honestly that she is the toughest negotiator in the family.

When we were first married she had a 1958 Chev Impala and I had a 1954 Mercury and we owed nothing on either car. I thought it would be a good idea to trade them both for a 1960 Triumph. Not a good idea! I traded both cars and still owed a bunch on the Triumph. Lesson one listen to your wife. She said all along it was not a good deal. From then on she has negotiated every car buying experience and we have almost always come out without losing our shirt. (No one wins every time).

My wife was way ahead of her time. She is almost as nutty about cars as I am but much smarter about how to get the sales deal that makes sense. The only time we were lost was on a lease deal that was not good for us on the back end. The low payments were nice but when the lease was up we were surprised at the cost to turn the car back to the dealer.

Lesson, Read all the fine print. It will take hours but you will save money in the end. Know exactly how the end of the lease works and what it costs if something happens and you need to terminate the lease early.

Here's some simple advise that will save you a lot of frustration when dealing with the sales person. We were shopping for a car, had three kids in tow and found just the right car. The salesman ask for my keys so they could take a look at our trade in. After about 2 hours of negotiating we could not come to an agreement but the sales person would not return our keys. We were stuck. The kids were tired and hungry, we were tired and frustrated. It took the threat of bodily harm for the sales person to return my keys so we could go home. We wasted an entire day and had nothing to show for it.

Lesson, never give up your keys, always go with the car for them to evaluate it.

* Do the Research. Value, performance and prices of your car choice.
* Be Prepared to Bargain. The Sales Person is not your friend! They want all your Money.
* Make sure you can afford the car's up keep after purchase. The fancier the car the more expensive the Tires, Tune up, Oil change, Etc..
