Audio Capacitors Information

Many car audio enthusiasts ask about the importance of car audio capacitors to their overall car audio performance. If you have a high powered system or your amplifier doesn't get enough power, probably you need a capacitor. Making sure you have a capacitor installed will prevent any damages to your amp and other audio components.

Car Audio Capacitors Information and Installation

What is the main role of a car audio capacitor?
Unlike automobile batteries, the main function of an audio capacitor is to store energy. This stored power will be used on demand (when your amp needs it). This will ensure that your audio system is being used to its maximum capability.

How do I know that I need an audio capacitor?
The first thing you will notice is dimming lights. The light will get weaker each time a heavy bass note sounds. If you installed the right capacitor, your audio system would have received the right amount of power needed.

What type of a car audio capacitor should I buy?
Depending on your system, but generally speaking:
- For mid-level systems (1000 watts maximum), you need a 1 Farad capacitor.
- For 1000 - 2000 watt systems, you need to get 1.1 to 1.9 Farad capacitor.
- For 2000 - 3000 watt systems, you need 2 to 2.9 Farad capacitor.
- For high power (over 5000 watt) systems, you need 5+ Farad capacitor.

Don't let your amp ask for more power anymore? Get an audio capacitor that fits your needs. You can choose from a wide selection of brands including Rockford Fosgate, Monster Cable, Bazooka, Boss and more.

How to install car audio capacitors
1) Disconnect the battery cables from your car battery.

2) Mount your audio capacitor close to your car amplifier; it amp and the capacitor need to be close enough because you will need to connect the two together. You can mount your car capacitor in your trunk, or to your speaker enclosure.

3) You can now disconnect the power and ground from the amp, and connect them to the capacitor, if you have enough extra wire you can cut two short pieces to run back to the amp from the cap, or you may need to use some fresh wire.

4) Once the cables are hooked to the capacitor on the input side, connect another power and ground from the output side, back over to the amp where you initially disconnected the cables from, once this is done, hook your battery terminals back up, and you are ready to go!

What is a capacitor?

A capacitor or condenser is a passive electronic component consisting of a pair of conductors separated by a dielectric (insulator). When a potential difference (voltage) exists across the conductors, an electric field is present in the dielectric. This field stores energy and produces a mechanical force between the conductors. The effect is greatest when there is a narrow separation between large areas of conductor, hence capacitor conductors are often called plates.

An ideal capacitor is characterized by a single constant value, capacitance, which is measured in farads. This is the ratio of the electric charge on each conductor to the potential difference between them. In practice, the dielectric between the plates passes a small amount of leakage current. The conductors and leads introduce an equivalent series resistance and the dielectric has an electric field strength limit resulting in a breakdown voltage.

Capacitors are widely used in electronic circuits to block the flow of direct current while allowing alternating current to pass, to filter out interference, to smooth the output of power supplies, and for many other purposes. They are used in resonant circuits in radio frequency equipment to select particular frequencies from a signal with many frequencies.
