Carcassonne: The Game

Each player draws a tile from the deck and places it, face up, on the playing surface. The players must place their tiles in a manner that contributes to the features of the previously played tiles - that is to say, that if a card features a road, the newly placed tile must connect that road.

During the player's turn, they have the option of placing a follower, commonly known as "meeples," onto the playing surface. The player can choose to place their follower on only one of the possible playing surfaces (ie. the follower can be placed on a road, a field, cloister or castle) - but the player must choose only one of those.

Once all the tiles have been placed, the game ends. The winner is the player who accumulated the most points, through claiming ownership of the most tiles.

In 2001, Carcassonne was awarded the top honors of Spiel des Jahres (or Game of the Year) by German board game critics.

It has also won, or been nominated for, several other awards for it's clever and thought-provoking gameplay:
