Cardboard Box Halloween Costumes

When All Else Fails...Use the BOX!

As a kid, I remember sometimes getting an expensive gift, but having way more fun playing with its huge box. Rarely will you find an adult without a similar childhood memory. The invisible attraction between people and giant cardboard boxes is something that merits government funding for a scientific study.

Why limit the thrill of cardboard box memories to birthdays and Christmas-like holidays when you can spread fun and save money during other festive times? One of the best times to enjoy a cardboard box is when you or your child needs a creative, yet inexpensive, Halloween ensemble.

FIRST THINGS FIRST

GO FIND SOME CARDBOARD BOXES (or at least some type of usable cardboard)!!

Cardboard!

Last resort, if you can't find any for free locally, is to buy it. Try contacting some of the larger department stores that receive inventory in huge boxes. Some they save, but tons of it is flattened and sent for recycling. Also, stores that sell a lot of small items ~ that stuff is shipped in big boxes that are often thrown out.

And now for a random list of cardboard box costume ideas:

  • television, radio, iPod, cell phone, computer, iPad, Nintendo DS, etc. (for a dark and/or shiny look on these items, use either black outdoor garbage bags, window film (dark or light, depending) or reflective tape and use aluminum foil for anything silver)
  • playing card (or deck of cards), checker/chess/backgammon board, Rubik's Cube, jack-in-the-box, favorite book, chalkboard/message board, box of crayons, etc. (for the games, use duct tape to make the colored squares and for a chalkboard, use the stick on chalk boards squares or contact paper and encourage people to write messages on it ~ just don't forget the chalk, for crayons, use Styrofoam cones or make cones from tag board and wrap with duct tape)
  • milk carton, box of cereal, stick of gum, piece of pie/cake, piece of candy (think Jolly Rancher, Starburst, candybar), etc. (cellophane wrap works well for candy wrappers, aluminum foil for gum wrappers, for cake icing try expandable sealing foam and to add ice cream with pie, use 1/2 a large Styrofoam ball)
  • car, truck, bus, taxi cab, space ship, boat, train, etc. (most of these can be finished with paint and if you need decals or emblems just print them off the computer, for simple words like taxi or bus you can use electrical or duct tape or stencils or even the stick on letters, and for anything shiny use aluminum foil or silver tape)
  • shower, chicken coup, Dracula in his coffin, road signs (no u-turn, stop, yield, wrong way) barrel of monkeys, CFL light bulb in a box, any unusual item you can think of!

While researching all of the cool cardboard box Halloween costume ideas, this one really got my attention. Very unique and such a fun costume for a couple or for siblings. Heck, it'd really be cute to make it into a family affair and make an entire roller coaster out of it. Don't have enough family members? Just enlist the neighbors!

Halloween Costume Debate

what's the best way to get a Hallowe'em costume?

Both homemade and store bought costumes have their advantages, but what kind do you think is best and why?

Which is better, homemade or store bought/rented costumes?

Homemade Rocks!

glockr says:

Homemade is better but we never have the time, so usually end up with store bought.

OhMe says:

Homemade costumes are usually much more creative and fun

naheedahsan says:

i think it's better ..............

Ramkitten says:

Personally, I like homemade because they're cheaper. On other people, I find they're often more creative than those that are bought or rented.

theraggededge says:

Homemade for fun and originality. Store bought for harassed mothers!

Store Bought Rocks!

goo2eyes says:

homemade is cheaper but store bought or rented ones are more appropriate for halloween.

Last But Not Least!

because I always have ONE more thing to say

Please remember to be safe when you are out and about on Halloween. Add some reflective tape or reflective clothing to the kids, or have them wear those glow necklaces/bracelets or carry glow sticks. Sending a flashlight is a good idea, too. It's tough to see uneven sidewalks or exposed tree roots in the dark. And you know what they say about safety...it seems to come in numbers, so if you can't go out with them, get a group of kids to go together. For the adults ~ just be responsible (you know what I mean).

Happy Halloween!

Thoughts? Suggestions? Ideas?

do you know any place to get free cardboard?

Share your wisdom with us, the unsuspecting masses (okay, the few who pay attention to my work don't count as masses, but all together, they have some mass)!

You can also make a pretty awesome Robot costume with a box. I really like this lens, missed it last Halloween but I'm bookmarking it for next time.

I love this! Cardboard boxes make great costumes and also make great stage props. I have sure made a lot of things out of boxes.

sometimes, other kids mob or tease some kids. considering that my kid wear the cardboard box around him/her, i can imagine them singing in chorus- eh-EH-eh-EH-eh. my kid would then run home and cry. i could come to a halloween party with a cardboard box around me because i can take the heat.

actually, i will prefer homemade halloween costumes considering the economic situation nowadays. for kids, they like superman, batman costumes and that i can't make.
