Coming to Cardiff?  Great!

I have lived here all my life, so here is everything you should do when you visit:

More United Kingdom Info:

Tanglewood Guesthouse

My name is Lewis, and I made this page about Cardiff.

If you're coming to Cardiff, I'd love to meet you!

My grandparents run a guesthouse about 15 minutes from the centre of Cardiff, and if you're coming to Cardiff... this is where you want to stay.

The house is very large, the rooms are amazing, and the garden is beautiful. And my grandparents are, of course, lovely people.

You know the AA Star Rating for guesthouses and hotels? (4* Guesthouse, 5* hotel etc).

Well the AA sent in one of their Guesthouse inspectors to pretend to be a guest and to judge whether my grandparent's guesthouse was worthy of the 3* rating it had. And when he had finished his visit he told my grandparents he was VERY impressed and that he was awarding them an extra star.

So they are now a 4* Guesthouse 15 minutes from the centre of Cardiff :-)

You can see some pictures by clicking onto their website (Yes! My GRANDPARENTS have a website!).

Cardiff Castle

Cardiff Castle is one of Wales's leading tourist attractions.

In the heart of the capital, alongside city centre shopping and the magnificent Bute Park, the Castle's enchanting fairytale towers conceal an elaborate and splendid interior.

Even if you have seen too many castles, the Winter Smoking Room in the Clock Tower and the green parrots of the Arab Room are worth the diversion.

Cardiff Bay

The bay has been turned into a vast freshwater lake with the introduction of a barrage.

A few boat tours operate from Mermaid Quay (Cardiff Bay), which allow you to gain an understanding of the history of this exciting area.

Cardiff Waterbus has introduced a new taxi service which operates throughout the year from the Bay to the city centre and Penarth.

You can go from Cardiff Castle to Cardiff Bay by Water Bus, then have a meal at Harry Ramsdon's famous Fish and Chip Shop...

Cardiff City Hall

Across the Boulevard de Nantes from Cardiff Castle is Cardiff City Hall with its elegant French Renaissance design, soaring clock tower and dome, upon which is perched a fierce Welsh dragon, the national symbol.

This building is on the way to the National Museum and Gallery and is worth a quick tour.

On the second floor, the Marble Hall holds statues of Welsh heroes, including St. David, the patron saint; King Howell the Good; Owen Glendower, who led a Welsh uprising starting in 1400 before he disappeared from history; and Henry Tudor, who claimed the English throne as Henry VII.

Admission is free.

National Museum of Wales

Next door to Cardiff City Hall is the National Museum of Wales.

The Museum and Gallery's extensive collection contains everything from Wales's Celtic past to an interesting collection of European Renaissance art and French Impressionist canvases that include Renoir's "Parisian Lady," three of Monet's water lily series and Van Gogh's last canvas, painted in Auvers-sur-Oise before he killed himself in July 1890.

There are always excellent events going on at the National Museum of Wales, and you can click here to find out 'What's On' at the museum at the time of your visit to Cardiff.

The Millenium Stadium

This huge 72,500-seater stadium is home to Wales' National Rugby Team.

Tours of the stadium are available every day.

The Welsh Team charge down the Millenium Stadium's Players' Tunnel and onto the pitch whilst tens of thousands of rugby fans raise the roof with 'Bread of Heaven'...

The changing rooms, full of pre-match tension or the joy of a home win as the players retire to baths and showers before celebrating in the Cardiff Arms Suite...

Wales Millenium Centre

Home to the Welsh National Opera

When you see the Wales Millennium Centre you'll see that it can only have been designed and built in Wales.

The brief to the architects was that it had to be "unmistakably Welsh and internationally outstanding".

I'm sure you'll agree!

There are always great shows to be seen, and you can see the 'What's On' by clicking here.

St Fagans Museum of Welsh Life

The Museum of Welsh Life, with its outdoor village of traditional Welsh homes and a working farm, is on the grounds of St. Fagan's Castle.

The open-air campus has about 40 original buildings moved there from all parts of Wales, and the walking tour is an intimate encounter with Welsh country life down through the centuries.

St Fagans is a large, living museum, and is a fun and interactive experience, making it a very popular family day out.

The museum, which is open daily, is on the western edge of the city.

Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch

Not in Cardiff, but still worth mentioning.

There really is a place in Wales named...

Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch!

Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch is a village on the island of Anglesey.

It is in the Guiness Book of records as having the longest place-name in Britain, and in English the name reads:

"St Mary's church in the hollow of the white hazel near to the rapid whirlpool and the church of St Tysilio of the red cave"

The correct pronunciation of the name in Welsh can be heard online on the village website by going here:

Castell Coch

Castell Coch, meaning Red Castle in Welsh, is a perfect fairytale castle.

It is even referred to by many people in Cardiff as 'The Fairytale Castle'.

This romantic creation of the Victorian age was designed by William Burges for the 3rd Marquis of Bute.

Castell Coch has a medieval look to the outside but the interiors are pure Victorian fantasy, richly decorated and highly imaginative.

Castell Coch is worth seeing, and after visiting here a visit to Cardiff Castle is definitely required to see the ultimate example of the collaboration between Lord Bute and William Burges.

Another thing that makes this Castle famous is that I ride my bike here most sundays.

It is about an hour away from my house.

Techniquest

Interactive, hands-on exhibits make the Techniquest Science Museum the perfect destination for families wanting to have fun.

There are over 160 exhibits! And they're all great fun!

The Techniquest website says,

"You will become absorbed in the fascinating world of science and technology with over 160 hands-on exhibits to explore.

Puzzles and activites that will keep the whole family entertained include:

Fire a rocket;
Test your reaction times;
Race an electric car;
Launch a hot air balloon;
Watch a bubble race;
Navigate a mirror maze

...and much, much more."
