How to find Cardiff Freecycle

Freecycle is a community of people who have stuff they don't want that is too good to throw away.

Do you have something in your garage or stored somewhere in your house that you don't need any more... but you can't bear to throw it away?

Offer it up on Freecycle and someone else who wants it can give it some life! 

Step 0. Go To Cardiff Freecycle

Step 1. Setting up your account 

Freecycle is what is called a 'Yahoo Group', which means you need a Yahoo account to get started.

A Yahoo account is free, and takes about five minutes to register.

You can register for a yahoo account on the freecycle page. You'll see!

Step 2. Sign in to Freecycle 

Click the big link above and you'll be taken to the Cardiff Freecycle page. In the left hand column you'll see a little sign in button. It's very small.

Click it and sign in using your new Yahoo account information. If you have a Flickr account then you already have a Yahoo account, so you can log in with that.

Step 3. Click 'Messages' 

You can then see on the top left of the page the word 'Messages'.

If you click that you can see all the stuff that is getting posted and claimed by the Freecycle users in Cardiff.

This is the section where Freecycle users post to when they have something they want to get rid of that is too good to throw away. Freecycle is all about saving good things from going to the landfill. Someone could be giving away exactly what you're looking for.

If you see something you like, click on the name of the person offering it and email them saying you will take it if it is still available.

NOTE: Claiming items on freecycle just to sell is unacceptable and will get you banned from all freecycle sites pretty quickly, a voodoo doll will be made of you, people will think bad things about you, and you'll never get your blue peter badge. It's bad, seriously.

Step 4. Maybe post something of your own... 

If you have something you want to get rid of, why not post it up for other people to claim and make use of?

See the word 'Messages' on the left hand side? Look just under that and you'll see the word 'Post'.

Click that and post your own message for everyone to see and help stop so much junk going to the landfill this year.

It helps if you also include a photo of the item you're offering, just so you don't waste time with someone coming to collect it and finding out it's not what they were expecting.

*A note about the email settings when you join the group* 

When you join the Cardiff Freecycle group you will be asked how you want to be alerted of new group messages.

Be warned. There are dozens of new messages posted each day. If you choose to get them all emailed to you then your inbox will fill up very quickly with tons of Freecycle emails. Be sensible. Set it to either email you a daily digest, or a weekly digest, or not email you them at all. You can manually log in to the group to see the latest messages anyway.
