Making Personalized Cards, Invitations and Signs

I enjoy making my own greeting cards and did it before the age of computers. Now I have lots of fun learning new ways to make them. One of my favorite things to do is to swap heads using clip art and a picture of the person I am making the card for. I have a program that let's you do a few of them but I always wanted to do more and different ones so finally figured out how to do it. I think people enjoy receiving their very own personalized greeting card, don't you? I am going to show some of the cards, invitations and signs that I have done. I have covered names and other information to protect the innocent.

NOTE: When I began this lens, I was just intending on showing cards, signs, and invitations that I did for fun or for non profit groups. Since then I have joined Zazzle and Cafe Press, print on demand companies, and am making merchandise from my original artwork and photographs. If the particular item is not showing as a Zazzle or Cafe Press product, it is because I used clip art from Microsoft Home Publishing or Picture It. These items can not be sold due to copyright. I am enjoying selling my Zazzle and Cafe Press Products. Thank you.

Our Own Christmas Card

Digital Cameras Make Card Making Easy

My daughter-in-law and I set the scene for this Christmas Card using some of the old stuffed animals and an old sled in front of our fireplace.
We took pictures with the digital camera and then faded the edges in the "Picture It" program.

The digital photography and paintings are the property of the owner and are not to be copied.

Thanksgiving Card

Clip art border from Microsoft Home Publishing

This card contains a prayer that was adopted by our Tate Family the Thanksgiving after our father's death. Dad had always said the blessing at our family gathering for Thanksgiving and we did not know how we were going to get through that first Thanksgiving without him. I found this poem in one of our mom's old "Ideals" and we made copies for everyone and read it in unison. Thus, beginning another tradition. The prayer is now also used as part of the closing ceremony for our Tate Family Reunion.
Tate Family Reunion

Now my sisters and I send this card each year to anyone we know who has lost a loved one during the year. We hope that it brings them as much comfort as it has us through the years.
Tate Sisters

I decided to make a lens about our Thanksgiving Prayer tradition. This is near and dear to my heart and I wanted to share our story.

Pilgrim Head Swaps

Fun for the Thanksgiving Table

Last year I did these pilgrim head swaps and had one at each place at the table with the person's head on a pilgrim. I printed on cardstock and then fixed them where they could stand on their own at each place. At first I thought it might be fun to make them into napkin rings which would have been easy enough but they showed up better this way. It was quite the conversation piece.

Head Swapping Is Fun!

Here is an example of one I did for a friend of mine's 70 Birthday. That is her head on a clip art body with clip art hair and crown.

These clip art images are from Microsoft Home Publishing 2000 and these examples are to show what can be done with this program.

A Birthday Card for a Special Friend.

Fun Invitations

For Showers, Birthday Parties, and More

I do a lot of invitations using the same idea of the head swap. This was an invitation I did for a Honey Do Shower. I guess that might be a southern tradition so I will explain: A Honey Do Shower is a Shower for the Groom so he will have everything he needs when his wife says "Honey Do this or Honey Do that". They are usually a lot of fun and the groom gets some very useful gifts like yard equipment, cleaning supplies, and grilling needs.

My niece (sister Joan's daughter)got married last year. The other sister (Betty) and I were in charge of the Hospitality Room for my niece's wedding. This is the sign we had on the door. This is my niece's head with her husband's head and their dog.

The Programs I Use

Microsoft Home Publishing 2000 and Microsoft Picture It

I switch in and out of these two programs because I like some things about both. I am sure there are other programs out there that do this but I am comfortable with these and enjoy working with them. The Picture It Program will allow you to cut out things from a picture which is something I do a lot. I like the clip art selections in my old Publishing Program.

Great Programs for Making Cards and Invitations

Available at Amazon

As I stated above, I use a couple of programs and move in and out of them. I have not tried all of these but may have to soon. I have a lot to learn about digital photography and am enjoying the journey.

Picture It! Photo Premium 9 [OLD VERSION]

I use the Premium 10 version but don't think there is a lot of difference.

This is the program that I used to make the DVD slideshow. I found it to be fairly easy to understand and liked it because it allowed me to enter parts of 10 songs with easy fade in and outs.
