It is not necessary that mystics should not be part of the society in Indian context. There are many mystics who live mundane lives, there are stories of such people in the Puranas and Upanishads. Just as every saffron clad person need not be self realized.
Often the spiritual quest and guru gang-ho are all part of socially acceptable procrastination.

There was a long time ago- I had to move because of my husband's job and he (the mystic) has no interest in phones or the internet anymore but we parted well and occasionally a friend will remind let him know that I send my love- he smiles (a slight smirk I am told), nods and offers words of love and peace in return. This was wonderful to read and filled me with warm memories of him. Thank you for this great insight!

I think you now know my answer to that one! Even down to the meditation. He can go for days without food and has considered breatharianism. To him it is all a playground, he loves everything and enjoys all contrast and spends hours and hours helping me. Lovely lens. With thanks and appreciation (again) Cathi xx (funny thing I only got 49% in the little test!!!)

I like this Lens, it seems that Eastern Understanding is Clearer on the Grasp of the True Nature of the Unknown or Unseen and How to Tap into it. Western Understanding prefers to deny or relinquish that kind of possibilities, I would say it like this. God created "All Things' and He said it is Good!! So why Fear things "We" can't understand of Grasp, sounds like it's "Closed-minded" Thinking to me?!?
Sorry, I got off track; this is a Wonderful and Very Enjoyable Lens!! :D

Well, yes, there is a mystic in my life, and I pretty much care for her by being as unobtrusive as possible while enjoying every moment of her presence in person and otherwise, she permits. Also by trying to intuit what physical needs she may have and attending to them, again, when she permits.
  • grandma_deal Sep 25, 2011 @ 8:57 am | delete
Very good, Darcie. I can see that mystics need a following. If one were to appear alone here in northeastern Oklahoma, I don't think he/she would be well treated. We have so many homeless, hungry, dirty, ragged, sad people, the mystic would be taken as one of these. And if she/he were to start speaking, I bet they would be taken to a mental hospital right away. We USA citizens have a short history compared to the Native Americans or the peoples of the East. Our values are not always in the proper place. You have given me something to think about and I want to read more of your writings in this genre.
  • alwaysjules Sep 5, 2011 @ 7:41 pm | delete
This is really imporatant writing. The cultural differences between the east and the west make is so difficult for the emerging and completion of a mystic's self realization. In a lot of native American cultures, teenagers coming to this awareness have been quickly diagnosed by western medicine as schizophrenic. Your lens sheds a lot of light on the subject, which is too much in the shadows. Thank you so much for caring so deeply and sharing so beautifully. I really, really enjoy rading your work.

I don't know that I have been in the presence of a mystic, but I met an interesting man who was friends with a good friend of mine and lived at his place for a bit. He was a kahuna and actually channeled me to me. He did not say he did so, but I knew and asked him if he just did that. He said yes. He told me he could go to any country and speak their language. He died a few years ago, but I have not met anyone like him...

Although your thoughts on "Mystics" doesn't jive with what I know them to be...it is a very well thought out lens and well presented.

To be a mystic in western society is to face crucifiction in society where fear of knowledge beyond the brain-washing of religion is instilled from babyhood and anyone who 'speaks' to God and gets answers is 'of the devil'. Featured this lens on My Spirituality.

An interesting take on the mystic.
  • crosscreations Dec 23, 2010 @ 9:51 am | delete
In the presence of a mystic, I would remain still and just listen intently - even if that meant just sharing the silence.
  • ajgodinho Dec 22, 2010 @ 4:25 pm | delete
Another beautiful and unique lens. Christ has been my mystic for year now and He alone is my foundation, strength and I feel very confident in Him. You're so right when you say the Christ is not about religion - He didn't come to establish a religion but a way of life, a personal relationship with God and not organized religion. Christ allows me to go beyond what I can imagine because with nothing is impossible. I think this is sufficed to say :) I'm loving your work...well done! :)

Interesting theories ~ As a Mystic, I'm not sure I agree with everything here, though some of it does ring true, other bits sound pretty far fetched, like the guy with the bugs, & Mystics being disassociated with other humans & such...I think if I did live in India, I would question if someone truly was enlightened or if they were just lazy & wanted others to take care of them. Also, some of the stuff mentioned really are indications of mental health issues & not signs of a mystic. Mystics are not disassociated, irresponsible & disconnected people, I've found them to be just the opposite, being enlightened requires being connected with the Universe & one cannot be connect with all energy & matter without feeling an almost cellular connectedness with all other living & non-living things...This is why the Dali Lama is so personable & outgoing & connected with the World, as was Gandhi, Mother Teresa & every Mystic I have ever studied or met...& as much as I love Ramkittens Screaming Man lens ~ that fellow is not a Mystic, quite possibly schizophrenic, which I do believe schizophrenics are often very connected to the Universe...but they aren't Mystics.

Yeah, I agree with much of this and it makes sense to me. The "rules" of society seem kind of ridiculous sometimes. Mystics "get" the deeper meaning - more importantly, the outcome of human transactions. They always promote helping others and are turned off by the materialism and power plays that people use to control others. They are not impressed at all by titles or money. They see the true nature and the even truer intention in a human being. Great lens Darcie! Take Good Care, Rose
