Betta fish (Betta Splendens) or Siamese fighting fish are one of the most popular freshwater fish available in the hobby today. Males come in a variety of colors and shapes, and each one is exquisitely beautiful. Caring for Betta Fish

Proper Care Requires Adequate Living Conditions

Proper care for Betta fish starts with providing adequate living conditions. Betta fish that are kept in small bowls live shorter lives and never attain their true beauty. When considering what aquarium to place a Betta fish in it is wise to plan on nothing smaller 3 gallons in size. Consider choosing a 5 gallon or 10 gallon aquarium where space is available. Betta fish are much more active and display brighter colors when they are given plenty of space to live in.

A Betta fish aquarium should also have proper heating and filtration. A good heater and filter are critical Betta fish supplies and should not be neglected. The filter will make sure that the water inside the tank is clean and free of harmful toxins. Clean water will promote longevity and good health. The heater will keep the aquarium water at the proper temperature for the Betta fish. Since these fish are tropical fish they need their water temperature to be between 72 and 80 degrees to be optimal.

How to Promote Betta Fish Spawning

Breeding Betta fish is not that difficult. They will breed when water conditions are adequate for them. Adequate water conditions are a temperature of about 80 degrees and the tank water level reduced to about half. Betta fish are Gouramis and like all Gouramis they a bubble nest builders. When conditions are right a male Betta will build a nest of bubbles at the surface of the water, usually between floating plants or objects. The floating plants help keep the nest intact. Seeing a bubble nest in the tank is an indicator that the male is ready for the female.

After they complete their nest they will then entice the female in to spawning by displaying to the female. After the pair has finished spawning the male will place the eggs into the nest and guard the nest till the eggs have hatched. The male Betta will display more aggression towards the female when he is guarding the nest so it is a good idea to remove the female from the tank once they have finished spawning. The male Betta should be removed once the fry have hatched from the eggs and are free swimming.
