Caring For Orchids
It has been generally thought that Orchids are difficult to grow, this could not be further from the truth. With just a little research and the basic information anyone can grow these gorgeous flowers in their home or garden. Under the proper conditions these plants will bloom for many years.
Orchids have a wonderful variety of fragrances for flowery to fruity. Some have a very subtle fragrance while others have a very strong fragrance. Some orchid fragrances include citrus, lilac, coconut and even chocolate.
Orchids do well when placed in an easterly facing window. Since orchids mainly grow in tropical regions they receive both sun and shade, it is therefore important to move the plant during the stronger afternoon sunlight. This will prevent the leaves of your orchid from turning yellowed.
Watering orchids should be done no more than once per week. Don`t let the soil dry out completely before watering again but keep it moist. Do not over water the plant as this will damage the root system.
Orchids also need to be fertilized. It is best to do this before it blooms. This will ensure that your orchids will bloom for the maximum amount of time.
Water Orchids
Orchids are mainly found in the tropical regions of the world where it can be warm and humid. A major part of providing the proper growing conditions for your orchids is to give the plant the correct amount of water. This can vary from species to species so it is important to do a little research on the particular species of orchid you wish to grow.It is also helpful to understand orchids in general and where they come from.Over watering orchids can kill the root system and should be avoided. Orchids should be watered once every week to ten days. However do not the orchid media become dry, keep it moist. Occasionally it may be necessary to spray a light mist on the foliage to prevent disease and bugs. When the plant is in bloom do not spray mist onto any of the blossoms.
Under watering orchids can also cause root and root system damage. When the plant is not receiving enough water the leaves will turn a darker green. This may look appealing at first and the plant may live a long while in this condition, but it will not bloom.
These plants when taken care of properly will show many blossoms over their lifetime and bring you great satisfaction and joy. Water orchids on a regular pattern and they will produce wonderful blooms for you year in and year out.
Orchid Light
Like so many other house plants, Orchids have their own set of needs and requirements to grow properly. Some of these needs include lighting, water and proper nutrition. The most important of these elements is the amount of and kind of light that the Orchid receives. This can vary from species to species.Generally most orchids do best when placed in a window with an easterly facing. Because can grow in densely populated tropical regions, they get an equal amount of sunlight and shade. It is important to not over expose your orchid to the intense sunlight of the afternoon, so moving the plant away from direct sunlight during these times is best.
If the orchid is getting too much sunlight the leaves will turn yellow or spotted and will wilt or die and fall off. When the leaves have a reddish pigment to them then this is an indication that the orchid is protecting itself from sunlight. Essentially this is like it`s own built in sunscreen. This indicates that the plant is getting the optimal amount of light.
Orchid light requirements are easily followed, just remember not over expose your plant to too much light.

- I love orchids and I place them all over my house. Instead of watering and spraying as I used to do, I dip the whole pot in the pail to make sure the roots got watered and then hang them again. My orchids seem to like this and have given me more blooms.
