Frankly, I didn't know this stuff either
I confess, back then, I didn't know I was doing it I did it because my boss asked me to. Jim: Thank you. And also, sorry. (I'll tell you why in a moment)
Now Jim's grown a very successful niche consulting firm, based in the US - and he's grown it, largely through self-promotion. He's prolific: He makes speeches, he writes books, he publishes articles, he makes videos, he authors white papers - he makes a lot of money, and he enjoys himself doing it. In fact he's a bit of a Rockstar (yes, that's British understatement).
So I had a great coach, even though I didn't know it at the time. And by my late 20's I was running their European operation. I needed to find clients, so I started writing and publishing articles, and making speeches - just like Jim does.
It didn't happen immediately, but with good coaching it didn't take long either, and soon the phone wouldn't stop ringing there were customers - and head hunters - everywhere!
Eventually, the headhunter calls ground me down. Curiosity got the better of me, and suddenly they were flying me, business class, from London to San Francisco for the first interviews. And before I knew it, I had a job offer from a huge consulting firm, for a salary with 'a vapour trail of zeros'. (Yes that is a direct quote)
Jim, again: I'm sorry. And thank you. You see, I took the job.

When I joined this huge firm, I set about doing the same thing surely, they needed people to make speeches, write books and articles, and publish white papers in order to get customers? No! this organisation had an entire department to do it, and it didn't need me!
Things went badly wrong - and my career stalled
I had no support: No mentor, no coach. I stopped writing articles, I stopped publishing my point-of-view. I gave only a few speeches, and then I stopped completely because nobody in the firm seemed to think it was worthwhile: Effectively, I had disappeared - I didn't understand how to use my skills in that context. I hadn't yet grasped the principles of what Jim was doing. I was just 'copying' him.
I stayed with the firm for nearly four years - and the client work was great - but overall my career was stagnant: I made no progress. None at all. And when times got tight after the dot com bubble, I was among the first to leave - let's just say, we made an agreement.
And I wasn't alone hundreds of people from the firm found themselves suddenly on the job market, wondering what had gone wrong.
Then I did something really smart! By accident.
Maybe you remember those dark days too? Some bad guys flew some planes into some buildings, Anthrax was being found in envelopes, and Washington was being terrorised by a sniper - it seemed like the whole world was going to rack and ruin.
Well this is what I did: I hooked-up with a few old colleagues from the firm, and we formed a 'support group'.
Gradually it grew. We started meeting at my home, but soon it wouldn't fit, and now - seven years later - we've got nearly 800 people on the mailing list. And we all come from that one same company!
This is what I didn't expect - my happy accident: Around 80% of my income has come from that network since setting it up! Now that's the power of networks!

Who knows? Maybe these were flukes? Maybe it was just me?
