Hello Bookworms, Leaders, and Job-Hunters,

CALL FOR ENTHUSIASM:
I'm looking for ideas and volunteers for the 2009-10 season! Let me know if you are interested in "hosting" one month: which essentially means suggesting a book, sending out a 1 pg summary, and leading a discussion. Or if you are interested in any other kind of leadership or support opportunities.

FACEBOOK: "NYC Career Book Club" Group

MEETINGS: One Thursday every month, 7-9pm

LOCATION: Forty Plus, NYC at 470 7th Avenue (between 35th and 36th, one block north of Macy's and Penn Station).

PURPOSE: Members of this group will develop their business acumen and learn to adapt to changing market conditions, increasing their long-term success. We select and read one career book per month.

April's Book of the Month: "Surviving a Layoff" by Lita Epstein

A Week-by-Week Guide to Getting Your Life Back Together

Being laid off is a traumatic event. Downsized workers must face decisions about reorganizing their lives and their finances, while grappling with the emotional grief of losing a job. This book is a practical guide to dealing with the tough questions a layoff poses. Using a week-to-week timeline, the book offers advice on such topics as: coping with grief and anger after a downsizing; reorganizing life after a layoff; how to launch a job search; balancing the job search with family and personal time; explaining a layoff to family and friends; and more. This book will show downsized workers how to reorganize schedules, set financial and organizational priorities, and go for their next job with confidence and enthusiasm.

March's Book of the Month: "Outliers" by Malcolm Gladwell

Amazon Best of the Month, November 2008 - Selected by Popular Demand

Now that he's gotten us talking about the viral life of ideas and the power of gut reactions, Malcolm Gladwell poses a more provocative question in Outliers: why do some people succeed, living remarkably productive and impactful lives, while so many more never reach their potential? Challenging our cherished belief of the "self-made man," he makes the democratic assertion that superstars don't arise out of nowhere, propelled by genius and talent: "they are invariably the beneficiaries of hidden advantages and extraordinary opportunities and cultural legacies that allow them to learn and work hard and make sense of the world in ways others cannot." Examining the lives of outliers from Mozart to Bill Gates, he builds a convincing case for how successful people rise on a tide of advantages, "some deserved, some not, some earned, some just plain lucky."

February's Book of the Month: "Change We Can Believe In"

with seven speeches and forward by President-elect Barack Obama

Why a "political book?" No matter who you voted for, this book illuminates which industries are expected to grow in early 2009 and beyond. Considering a career or job change? Read this book for a roadmap to the future. BONUS: Upload your targeted resume and cover letter to change.gov and tell the new administration EXACTLY where you want to fit into the new economic climate.

SUMMARY via Amazon: "At this defining moment in our history, Americans are hungry for change. After years of failed policies and failed politics from Washington, this is our chance to reclaim the American dream. Barack Obama has proven to be a new kind of leader-one who can bring people together, be honest about the challenges we face, and move this nation forward. Change We Can Believe In outlines his vision for America."

You are welcome to bring a book from the library or to purchase the book anywhere you'd like. If it is convenient for you, you may also purchase it from Amazon by following this link.
