Cooking can be a passion

A culinary education from one of the various cooking schools that are out there can make such a difference in a person's life. I never really realized how much love and passion can go into food and the act of making and preparing a meal until my cousin Jonas decided he was going to look into what kind of culinary arts degrees were available to get and enrolled in cooking school. Jonas you have to understand was always a very passive, uninvolved, and uninterested person in life. He just kind of went with the flow, but not in the good way. Actually he was more of a lump on a log. He lived at home and didn't work until he was 30 years old, never dated, never went out with friends, just stayed in his room and played video games. Now why his parents never made him leave, I do not really know. He was an only child and they were rather clingy parents so I guess they just did not want him to leave. But when he saw an ad for cooking school one day something in him turned on a light bulb and he enrolled the following week. Now he is out on his own, a very successful chef with a great relationship, and we all could not be happier for him.

Be a Self-Made Man (or Woman)

In our country, America, the land of opportunity, a lot used to be made of the idea of the self-made man. It wasn't unusual in those days for a person to be able to go from rags to riches on nothing but your own efforts.

Of course, the education requirements for many careers these days has made that kind of success rather unlikely for most people, but there are still ways to attain education and experience even when you are starting out with nothing.

If you want to become a self-made man (or woman -- let's not forget that equality is another of America's opportunities) you need to be willing to educate yourself. This requires a thirst for information, knowledge, and skills. You don't need a teacher in order to learn!

For example, my husband works as a manager in the financial industry, but he doesn't even have a college degree. (He is working on one now, though, through a program where his work reimburses him for classes.) He got where he is by starting in a lowly call center job at the company, but as he worked his way up the ladder he also read everything he get his hands on, on topics from business writing to how the stock market works.

Many other industries offer similar opportunities. For instance, in health care you can watch caregiver wellness DVDs to learn about how to be a home care provider, or if DVDs aren't your thing, you could also read some caregiver books. Books and DVDs are also good ways to learn more specialized skills -- for example, these Alzheimer's DVDs.

You don't really have to settle for the hand life has dealt you. The trick is just figuring out where in life you can create your own opportunities!

Online College Programs are Less Expensive

Working for a company that supports education is a wonderful opportunity to complete a degree program. However, upon finishing an associate degree I have found that even though the tuition increases at the university level the reimbursement which my employer provides does not. Therefore, much of the cost of my ba degree has been thrust back onto me and I cannot afford to pay the difference.

Since this is the case, I have been more selective about the university I choose to attend. What I have found is that the online university's tuition tends to be a bit less expensive then the local on campus programs. When I factored the cost to travel, and the arrangements I had to make in my schedule to accommodate a class, I found that online programs are the most cost effective curriculum available for me. Yet, despite the savings I also discovered that some of the most revered staff is often used for instruction and the degree is just as regarded as the local university I looked at.

I was happy to learn that the institution I selected offered more than the business administration associate degree online and I plan to continue my studies with them.

The History of Baseball

The history of baseball is a fascinating one that has positioned the sport as the sport of America.  While, of course, many other countries participate in the sport and have their own national leagues, baseball itself always harkens back to America.  As such, it is very popular among athletes and fans big and small.  However, without training and coaching, a baseball player, whether twenty-six or six years old, would be unable to enjoy the game.  That's where franchise opportunities come in.  When you open your sports franchise, you're providing quality instruction to athletes of all ages and contributing to the American sport.  You, your youth baseball franchise and the athletes who come to you for training and instruction, become a piece of the history of the sport.  Whether or not your athletes go professional isn't of key importance (unless it is their dream to do so, and then it is of the utmost import) as long as your athletes are learning and having fun at the same time.  After all, isn't that what sports are about?  Fun and self-improvement and development of team efforts?  Investing in your own training facility and your athletes is investing in baseball's noble history.

Online Classes with My Daughter

After retiring last year, I thought I'd try taking an interior design class, something I've wanted to do for a long time.  Unfortunately, a class like that is not available near me, but my daughter Wendy helped me find information about online courses on my new computer.  Actually, she's the one who started me on computers a few years ago and taught me the basics.  Since then, I've had a lot of fun using mine, mostly for e-mail and sending digital photos.

My daughter and I discovered some online colleges that have classes in design interior. You can even get online bachelors degrees or associates degrees.  I hadn't intended on getting into a degree program, but the courses look really interesting and an associate's degree doesn't take that long to get. Besides, I'm retired now, so it's not like I haven't got the time.

Wendy's also gotten interested in some of the interior design courses, and we're even talking about taking a few of the same classes.  Wendy is a stay-at-home mom and she needs to do something besides take care of the kids all day.  We think going to school would be a really fun thing to do together.

The Advantages of Having an MBA

Lately, I've been thinking about getting my master's degree. It's something I've wanted to do for a long time, but I've always put it off. It's just so hard to find the time to go back to school.

That's why I'm writing this blog. I'm trying to come up with a list of reasons why I should enroll in an online MBA business program. So far, I've come up with these advantages of completing one of the MBA online degree programs.

More Trustworthy- In the eyes of both employers and clients, someone with the drive to get their masters degree business management is trustworthy. It demonstrates that you have the motivation to better yourself. For this reason, job seekers with a masters degree are highly sought after.

Higher Pay- Perhaps, the most obvious perk of getting an MBA is the increase in pay that comes with it. The average starting salary for those with their MBA is around $100k. Take note, that's the starting salary. You'll only go up from there.

New Opportunities- One of the most attractive benefits of getting an MBA is the new opportunities you'll be afforded. With just a bachelor's degree, you might be bound into a single job. But with an MBA, you'll have the freedom to do some exploring until you find the job that best suits your desires.

Figuring Out What You Really Want

I really enjoy spending time with people from older generations because I feel like it helps me to learn things that I wouldn't otherwise learn. Recently I got the chance to watch a friend's father go through a serious career change and it really inspired me to figure out what I want for my own life.

This man had worked for twenty five years in a position with the post office but what he had always really wanted was to have a pro golf career. Although he realized that professional golf careers are difficult to launch at his age, he recently started thinking about the other careers in golf that he could get. He started taking some golf classes and ended up starting a second career teaching golf to young kids.

I'm not even remotely interested in golf myself but the whole process of watching him decide to chase this dream - and then adapting the dream to the reality of his stage of life - was just really inspirational. It reminded me that it's never too late to do the things that we really want to do. We just have to figure out what it is we really want to do first!

From Far Away to a Step Closer to Career Success

Had it not been for the Internet, Allison would not have found Sanford Brown MO at all. Her family residing on a distant outpost in the Aleutian Islands in Alaska, they were thousands of miles away from any significant business career opportunities. Still, Allison longed for the pace of the city and the potential for opportunity in the business world. The school website was a fantastic place to start. Through here, Allison learned about everything she needed to know about the school, as well as others in the contiguous United States.

It would be a long journey to Hazelwood, Missouri, but this would be the adventure of a lifetime. The management business admin program was what she had been looking for. Allison enrolled in it before she even had a plan of how exactly she was going to leave her village. That left her with a dilemma, but young Allison would not give up, and worked various jobs. The town even set up a fund in her favor. Her mom being the town manager helped push this initiative, but the following year, Allison was able to make the trip to Hazelwood, find a roommate, and begin her academic journey to business success.

Potential employers are typically impressed with business backgrounds because it shows that a student is well-rounded and knowledgeable in administration and management.

California Is Just a Little Bit Different

One of the things that happen when you've lived in California for awhile is that you forget that the rest of the country doesn't necessarily think or behave the way that we do in California. Some of the differences are major but most are subtle.

Take, for example, the CA Culinary Arts. The people who go to school to get an education in culinary arts in California will learn most of the same things that they would learn at a cooking school elsewhere in the U.S. That's particularly true for schools offering nationwide programs like the Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Programs. But the way this education will be applied is different in California.

There is a great concern in California for the organic way of life, for choosing to purchase goods from local people and for building a community. There is also a strong pressure here to not conform to the norms, to always be a little bit innovative. These things creep into the way that chefs work. Students at a California culinary school might learn to cook in the same way as students of other schools but they will not be the same kind of chefs. Everything they cook will have that California flavor.

Culinary Arts Schools Fear the Trans Fat News

There is a big push right now in certain areas for state governments to ban the use of trans fats by all restaurants. This is causing a lot of concern to students of culinary arts programs because of what it may mean for their careers. Of course, chefs will still be needed whether or not this plan goes through but there are some issues that are raised by this that are important to the people entering these fields today.

The major issue that is bothering people is the fact that they don't think that the government should have the right to say what people can and can not eat. For the state to ban the use of trans fats in restaurants means that the state is actively making a rule about what people can and can't eat - at least when they dine out. The ultimate goal is to improve the health of the average citizen but many people believe that it's not right for the state to be making those decisions for us or to be saying what's in the best interest of our health.

This issue is important but it's not the one that is bothering budding chefs. For them, the problem is simpler - there are a lot of great recipes that just don't turn out right if they aren't allowed to include trans fats (flaky pastries, for example). Those people who don't want to have to worry about this might want to stay away from culinary schools and careers in places like New York and California and look instead at something like a Scottsdale Culinary Arts Degree where the issue isn't likely to come up for awhile.

Making Two Degrees Work Together

I found it really difficult to choose a college degree program. This wasn't because there wasn't anything that I wanted to study but rather because I wanted to study everything that I possibly could. To narrow down my choices to just one degree program seemed to me a choice that was too limiting to make. In the end, I chose two wildly different degree programs and had to figure out a way to make them work together. And in the end, they did.

What I learned from this experience was that it is possible to pursue two very different interests in a way that allows them to be integrated into a single life. For example, you may think that a graphic design degree from Collins College wouldn't be able to mesh well with an online criminal justice degree. When you find a job doing web design for a non-profit prisoners' rights organization, you'll realize that these different things can be combined.

Ultimately, of course, you do have to make some choices. You can't pursue every single thing that interests you. But you don't have to have a singular focus on a narrow path in order for your life to work out. You just need to be willing to be creative in combining your interests throughout your life.

Jobs That Follow an Associate Degree Online

Getting an associate degree online seems like a great idea, right? It allows you to complete a college program in a short period of time. The online format lets you maintain a well-rounded life that includes employment and other commitments that you may have while going to school. It's a solid way to get yourself into a better position in life because it gives you the education that you'll need to secure a better job.

However, this approach to education only really seems to work if you make smart choices in the programs that you choose. There are lots of different fields that you can study online in an associate program but they aren't necessarily all going to lead to a good job.

For example, a psychology associate degree online isn't likely to lead to any real work in the field of psychology. Even a bachelor degree psychology doesn't do much because this is a field that requires more than a bs degree to get anywhere. However, there are many fields that don't require a lot of training at all; these are the ones that need to be looked for by anyone seeking to attend a short-term associate degree program online.

Colleges Should Treat Students Like Customers

I hated dealing with my college. I hated the hassle of figuring out the complicated admissions process. I loathed the time during each semester when I had to fight to get on wait lists for the classes I needed to graduate. And I won't even get into how I felt if I had to go to the financial aid office.

Colleges tend to operate in a top-down manner. They create the rules and you as a student are supposed to follow them. This structure ignores one very basic fact about your education - the fact that you're paying for it! You are buying your education which means that you're a customer and should be treated like one.

Small schools tend to have a better grasp on this concept than universities do. For example, Western Culinary Institute focuses on its commitment to culinary students. If it didn't, the students would go elsewhere. Maybe bigger schools should learn a lesson from these guys!

Cookies and cakes and pies - Oh my!

Most people already know what cookies, cakes and pies are, but might not know from where they originated and how they became such popular dessert and snack items. For example, cookies were actually introduced as unsweetened hard wafers that served the purpose of travel companions, much like the travel cakes used throughout baking history. They can be in many different shapes, sizes and textures; classified as bars, dropped, rolled, shaped, piped, refrigerator or icebox, and hand formed.

Cakes came to us by the Egyptians, who cooked round, unleavened bread on a hot stone. Eventually, when the eggs and butter were added to the flat cake dough, the consistency and baked product became what we know as cakes today. Cake decorating with icing or rolled fondant has been added as a sweet finishing touch, as they teach to students at a professional baking and pastry program for culinary careers.

Pies, on the other hand, began as a way to eat and cook meat. Historians have noted that the Greeks were the originators of the pie pastry for sealing in the juices of meats while cooking. Today's pie can still be meat filled; however, they are more commonly filled with fruit, custards, creams and meringues. There are also smaller sizes of pies called tarts.

For anyone interested in entering the health care field, there are so many different health care educational institutes to choose from, it can become overwhelming. The health care training in Atlanta is considered to be one of the best from an institute called Sanford Brown. For instance, training to be a medical assistant requires nothing less then top of the line education from theory and hands on work. This can be found at Sanford Brown.

The core curriculum of this program covers a great deal of areas within the field to make sure you are qualified to assist any medical procedure done in the health care world today. Although this may seem overwhelming at first, this is a great opportunity to make sure you have all the knowledge you need to obtain the career of your dreams. Learning a Job Despite Weaknesses

If someone were told tell me early in high school that I'd be able to make it in the world of medicine I wouldn't have believed them. I was terrible and math and science, and despite how hard I tried, I simply couldn't understand the basic concepts I was getting taught. Everything seemed so hard that I didn't even know if I'd be able to go to college OR find a job. In many ways, it felt like there was really no hope.

But then I found a school in my hometown of New York that would teach me not the basic concepts of medicine but the actual practice of medicine so that I could learn to do the various tasks I was given and ultimately get a real job at a hospital or doctor's office. In this way, I would not have to worry about learning complex math I would never have to use, because I was only taught the math that I would need to learn for that specific occupation.

Thanks to the education or I received at Sanford Brown NY, I was able to ensure that I had a real job I could be proud of after graduation, working in the world of medicine, but without having to learn the concepts I wouldn't need to know.

Le Cordon Bleu Boston Specializes in French Cooking Techniques

If you are going to be a successful cook in today's world, then you have to understand how to cook foods from all over the world. No longer are people visiting restaurants just to eat their trusted favorite meals. Now, they want to know that they can get something new and exciting when they pay big money for a meal at a nice restaurant. Along those lines, culinary schools have figured out that you have to prepare students to correctly prepare this type of food. Le Cordon Bleu Boston is one of the many programs that is specializing in this practice.

When you enroll this culinary arts school, you can expect to learn from some world class instructors. Those folks have prepared French cuisine for years and they will pass their wisdom on to you. After leaving Boston's Le Cordon Bleu, you will be able to go out into the restaurant industry and show off your craft, garnering both praise and adoration from people who love great French food.

College Programs Require Computer Skills

It is obvious to any high school student today that computer skills are a prerequisite to doing well in school. Whether it's just for writing up a paper or it's because a class requires a PowerPoint presentation, it's a given that you need to be able to run a computer correctly in order to be able to complete your work.

Although computer skills will be required for any type of college program, they are increasingly a specific need for popular college degrees. Just take a look at a list of courses offered by a vocational school like Melville Gibbs College. Over fifty percent of the degrees are things like game design and business administration, things that have computer skills as their foundation.

For the high school student, this is no big deal. It's a part of the young person's world. But it's something that can be really difficult for older returning students. Those people who aren't on top of their computer game should definitely think about taking some computer classes before applying to any specific degree program. You just can't make it without them anymore.

Finding Job Security: 4 Reliable Careers

With concerns being voiced about our economy and whispers of a possible recession circulating, job security is on everyone's mind.  No one wants to find themselves without a job as the economy declines, so be sure you get into a good, reliable career from the get-go!  Here are 4 careers that you'll find to be pretty reliable.

  1. Accounting -- Many people consider accounting to be pretty dry, dull work -- but in truth, boring work is better than no work at all.  Accountants are pretty sought-after folks.  Tax law and bookkeeping are things the average person doesn't understand (or want to understand), so an accountant's position in the private sector is fairly certain.  The government also has a huge need for accountants, which shouldn't change even if there is a recession.

  2. Business administration -- The knowledge of how a business runs inside and out is a valuable skill, even with the threat of recession looming.  Even in a recession, businesses must function, and function well; in fact, knowing how to run a business well is even more important during a recession than it is when the economy is thriving (during which period businesses practically run themselves).  Enrolling in a good business administration program is a good way to secure your career's future.

  3. Information technology -- No matter what happens in our economy, computers and the Internet are here to stay.  For this very reason, information technology (IT) is one of the best fields to be in right now.  Many schools, such as Brown Career College, have great IT programs to help you get started in this field.

  4. Medical and health care careers -- Careers in the medical and health care industries are also destined to be very secure, no matter what happens to the economy.  Health care and medicine are things that people will always need, which means plenty of job security for anyone in the field.  Many schools offer programs in health care and medical assisting.  For instance, Gibbs College Virginia has a good medical assisting program.

When planning your career during a slow period in the economy, it is important to consider how a recession will affect your job security.  For instance, right now the housing market is really struggling, so working in the real estate or mortgage industries is probably not going to offer very much job security.  On the other hand, choosing an industry that is likely to maintain an even rate of supply and demand is a good idea, because it ensures that you will still be able to maintain and move ahead in your career, no matter what happens to the economy.

Denver Offers Many Healthcare Career Opportunities

If you are considering a career in the health care industry, Denver may be a perfect place to get it.  There has been a shortage of qualified nurses and other health care professionals in Denver for quite a few years running now -- it's bad enough that the hospitals at times have actually taken to advertising on benches, at bus stops, and on the sides of busses.

Also, there are a lot of hospitals in the Metro Denver area.  Littleton Adventist, Swedish Medical, Porter, Craig Hospital, St. Josephs, The Children's Hospital, and the network of University of Colorado hospitals and medical centers… just to name a few!

There are many training programs across the United States, such as these health care training Florida programs.  Sanford Brown Jacksonville and Sanford Brown Institute Garden City are a couple of other schools that can prepare you for a job in the industry.

You can get your education wherever you are at now, but when it comes to job security you might consider relocating to Denver.  In addition to the fact that it's simply a great city to live in, there are more than enough opportunities for health care professionals here!

Culinary School Preps Students for Success

There are those who jump into attending a culinary school thinking their education will be all about cooking tasty meals and desserts. Little do they know that there is an intense program that involves kitchen management and food safety, budgeting, equipment care and much more. Of the many work environments that individuals can put themselves in, the kitchen is one of the most dangerous. Searing high temperatures, boiling water and sharp instruments are only a few of the dangers culinarians work around each day. Working in this type of environment requires training to not only prevent critical mishaps but what to do in the unfortunate event one occurs.

Only students that can complete this intense type of training with above average skill will be granted culinary arts degrees. There is simply too much irreversible damage that can happen to tolerate a less than stellar performance. The vast majority of culinary arts cooking schools want to ensure that an individual gets to enjoy his or her career long term. This cannot be done with inadequate or shoddy training. A graduate of good skill and performance is likely to have more options throughout their career. They are more likely to land opportunities for gainful employment with top notch restaurants and kitchens where quality is the fundamental.

Super Computer Careers with Virginia College IT Programs

From personal laptops units to safety network systems, there is no doubt that computers are integral to every day life. Rare is the individual who does not depend on computers in some way. Even if an individual tries to avoid technology, its common uses in everyday life make it nearly impossible to do so when out and about in the world. The heavy dependence on computers creates a heavy demand for certified and well trained professionals. These professionals not only manage a vast number of systems and keep them in good form, they keep the world running. It is no wonder that Virginia College IT Programs have caught the eye of so many in the last few years.

Working as a computer network technician will mean being able to find a job almost anywhere. These professionals are needed to do everything from installations of software to upgrading of software, all the while maintaining the software as well. Their knowledge helps to keep things running smoothly in a number of different platforms. The Network Help Desk Technician is the go to professional many seek out when a computer crisis suddenly arises. Their expertise and training can walk any individual through any predicament with absolute skill.

Pros and Cons of Online Education

Online education is beginning to pick up as a popular form for post high school education. For many, it represents a way to go to school without actually having to go to school, allowing them to take classes whenever they can find their time in their busy work schedules. However, online education has many pros and cons in the way it differs from the traditional campus:

Pros:

- Lower admission standards due to not having a limited class size allow more people to go to college that may have struggled in high school.
- Flexible scheduling so that you can hold down a job and still complete the work you need to complete.

- No Room and board or moving costs.

Cons

- You cannot socialize with classmates.
- Currently, employers look at some of these schools with skepticism since it is difficult to ensure the students are learning the material, as well as the novelty of online classrooms.

- If you have problems with your Internet connection, you can fall very behind in class.

Online education is not for everyone, but it still has the potential to help people with busy schedules attend the best online colleges in their free time.

Cool Things I learned In College

While my friends may scold me for saying this - There is nothing cooler than an education. Sure, some of the classes are boring and pointless. Others make you want to pull out your hair. But there were things I learned in school that will stick with me for the rest of my life. Things that I guarantee I would not have learned if I had decided to skip out on college.

For example, I learned that if you fill a cup of water to the absolute brim (where the water is almost spilling off the edge), you could still drop about 19 or 20 nickels into it before it will spill over.

I learned that if you put up a video of two groups of kids tossing a basketball back and forth, and ask your friends to count how many times the team wearing black shirts passes the ball, they will not notice a giant man in a gorilla suit dancing in the middle of the screen.

I learned - through an experiment - that tapping coke cans does not actually cause the soda to not fizz over.

All of these things I would not have known had I decided to skip out on college. I may have had some classes that I didn't like, but college was easily the best thing that ever happened to me.
