Customer Testimonial:

"...I couldn't believe how easy it was! All had to do was apply the simple information..."

I spent $500 on a brand new aquarium, thinking that it was going to be filled with extraordinary looking goldfish. I bought eight fish and two weeks later four of them were dead! I didn't know what to do so I went down to the pet store and bought a bunch of expensive cleaning products for my tank and even a new filter, but a week later all of my fish were gone. I was completely baffled and that's when i decided to do some research and I came across your book. I couldn't believe how easy it was! All I had to do was apply the simple information outlined in each chapter and now my new fish are looking brilliant!

Thanks Dane

Goldfish Care

So you've decided to bring a new life into your world, and no it's not a baby, it's a goldfish!

Growing up, many people had a goldfish as their first live pet, and their first dead pet too. Too many times have parents been required to flush poor Goldie down the toilet, only to replace him with a new fish before anyone had the chance to notice.

Goldfish care is assumed to be low maintenance and easy. Get a bowl, fill it with water, toss in some fish flakes and you're done right? Not quite. Before you even choose your new friend, you should be aware that goldfish have special needs and preferences that, if addressed, will help to prevent the creation of a goldfish graveyard in your toilet.

For starters, goldfish are social creatures and are happiest in groups of up to 5 fish. The tank should be big enough to accommodate the group and a 5-10 gallon tank (per goldfish) should provide adequate living space.

Choosing a tank can be almost as complicated as buying a car, there are so many flashy and expensive models! But the tank you buy should be in the best interest of your pet. Rectangular tanks allow for more horizontal swimming room, while the shape maximizes the surface area for oxygen levels.

The location of your goldfish's home should be away from windows and draughts, in a room with a stable temperature, away from loud noises, strong smells and wild children/animals. Remember location, location, location!

The décor of your tank is just as important to your goldfish's health as food and cleanliness. It should include a layer of gravel on the bottom, ornaments, plants (real or fake), a filtration system and any other fish related product that your fishy friend might enjoy. A gravel layer of 2-3 inches is recommended to help remove old food and fish droppings from your fish's living and swimming area. Gravel should be rinsed and checked for sharp edges.

Ornaments and plants provide great hiding and sleeping places for your fish pal. Think of ornaments as fish furniture, it's not a necessity, but it sure makes living a lot more enjoyable.

Filtration helps to keep your fish tank clean and for 2 or more fish, a mechanical filter is necessary. The gravel at the bottom of the tank acts as a natural filter, but can only handle so much abuse. Therefore, it is important to choose the right filter for your tank, and there are plenty to choose from.

Once you've got your equipment, be sure to set it up about two weeks prior to introducing Goldie to his new home. The gravel, ornaments and anything else being added to the tank should be washed and checked for sharp edges. Letting the tank to settle for two weeks allows for the pH levels to regulate, the water to oxygenate, and bacteria to grow, thus creating a happy and natural environment for your tank's new tenant.

Proper care will ensure a long and joyful life for your new best friend.

Breeding Goldfish

Breeding goldfish is actually a fair amount more difficult than most people would think. Much like us humans, Goldfish are rather particular about the conditions in which their little fishy babies will thrive.

Like women, goldfish females appreciate a date done right. They require proper mood lighting and temperature, a nice meal and a romantic environment to "get-it-on".

To breed your fish, these natural phenomena need to be replicated in order to produce the proper conditions for healthy egg production and maturation.

To get the best chances of success for you're goldfish breeding, improve the odds. Rather than tossing one girl and one boy fish into the tank, use a two male to one female ratio. Using six goldfish has pretty good possibilities, without overcrowding the tank. The males and females should be kept separated until spawning season, when they can all be joined in one big party.

Preparations for breeding fish should be taken approximately one year prior to spawning season. During this time, it will be your job as matchmaker to replicate the cycle in their natural environment. During the fall, water temperature should be kept cool; around 35-40 ºF and feeding should be reduced to three times per week.

Dry fish flakes should also be combined with worms (fish sized bites of course), duckweed and brine shrimp, which will help produce healthy eggs. After a couple of months (i.e. the winter), the water temperature should gradually be raised to 50-60 ºF, thus simulating the pre-spawning stage. This stage can last four to six weeks, giving you plenty of time to ever so slightly increase food rations (but not too much) and increase the temperature of the water without putting Goldie into shock.

For spawning to begin, the temperature of the water should be around 65-70 ºF. To prepare for this special occasion, a spawning mop or breeding pad should be placed on the bottom of the tank, and extra plants should be put in the aquarium. The plants act as magnets for the sticky eggs, making it easier for egg collection and relocation. Once everything is in place, reunite your goldfish buddies and let the romance begin.

After 3-6 hours, 500 to 2000 eggs will be released and (hopefully) fertilized, and then it will all be over. Infertile eggs, distinguishable by their white and hazy appearance should be removed from the tank as soon as possible, while the amber coloured fertile eggs should be moved to another tank with the same water temperature. After 3-5 days, the eggs will hatch and you will be the proud parent of many hundreds of fry!

The parenting of fry continues well after hatching, so make sure to inform yourself with information concerning feeding, bacteria control and filtration. Best of luck!

Goldfish Food

Incorrectly feeding your goldfish wrong food or the wrong amount of food is one of the biggest reasons why so many goldfish don't make it past a few months. It's highly important that you know exactly what to feed your goldfish and the required amount.

Consumption

Goldfish will eat almost anything that looks like it deserves devouring. That means you have to make sure you keep any scraps of food not meant for fish, out of the bowl, tank or pond. One of the common accidents is during feeding time when the person involved happens to have some kind of food scraps on their hands that inevitably get passed into the water when placing in flakes or pellets.

This can have devastating consequences because as you may already know, goldfish are prone to a number of diseases and all it takes is an alien bacterium to enter the water and before you know it you fish could be laying upside down in the tank within a day or two.

Make sure you always sanitize your hands before feeding time. This will prevent any unwanted bacteria from entering your goldfish's environment.

Flakes

Flakes have become a very popular food as for good reason. Most flake products contain the required amount of nutrient levels your fish need on a daily basis. They are also easy to eat and tend to stay surfaced long enough for your fish to consume the whole amount during feeding time.

This is important as with some other types of food that tend to sink to the bottom and rot for days, flakes stay afloat and usually is fully eaten before it has a chance to fall to the bottom of the tank.

One negative about flakes is that sometimes people get carried away when taking a portion to give to their fish. Goldfish don't need a lot of food and on many occasions suffer from diseases closely linked to overeating. Make sure you don't throw in too many flakes. A small finger-full will be enough.

Pellets

Pellets are the second most popular food for goldfish. They also contain the required amount of nutrients your fish need on a daily basis, but unlike flakes that stay afloat and easy to see, pellets tend to sink to the bottom after a while and can sometimes remain hidden and untouched, which will of course cause them to rot, intern creating unwanted bacterium in the water.

This usually means the tank water will become dirtier faster and must be changed more often than if you were feeding your goldfish flakes. It is much easier to determine how much pellet food you should feed your fish. I small finger-full usually results in the same amount of food to be placed in the tank daily.
