Looking for support for a caregiver or one who needs elder care?

I'm the keeper of my 94 year old Mom, Gert, and I've amassed quite a few caregiver or elder care articles. I thought I'd put them into one spot so that those in need could easily find them. The below are not only my articles, but some of my favorite articles (on Squidoo or not) about senior citizen care and support for caregivers.

And, if you're at all interested, you can read more about my evolution into caregiver for Gert in my lens Anatomy of a Caregiver - What Makes Me Tick. Or not...

This is one of my favorite articles - I hope it helps others who follow in my path. Things I wish I had known before becoming a caregiver.

Additionally, come visit my blog Gertie's Galavants where I write about travels, or lack thereof, with 95 year old Gertie.

Mom and I also watch a lot of movies. You can follow her ratings (in arthritic fingers up) on my blog Good Movies for Senior Citizens.

And, finally, if you're looking for a good Christmas, Birthday, or Valentine's Day present for a senior citizen, come visit Great gifts for senior citizens. I promise you'll find something here you wouldn't have thought about.

My articles on caregiving...

...This group of articles is about hospitalization and beyond

I started writing these articles as a way to escape my daily routine of caring for my elderly Mom. I'd hop on the computer when she was napping and jot down a few thoughts. These thoughts became articles which have gotten positive feedback, much to my delight. I always read my Mom the comments I get so please make sure to leave me a comment on the bottom of this article. Mom and I both thank you in advance!
Things I wish I'd known about being a caregiver
I've been caring for my now 95 year old mom for 5 years. My path has been wandering as I tried to figure out how to best care for her. In this Squidoo article, I document the things I wish I had known early on in my caregiving career.
Helping a hospitalized senior citizen
I always stay with my elderly Mom every minute I can in the hospital, including sleeping there overnight. The elderly should never be left alone in a hospital.
Choosing hospice - is it the right choice?
This one came to me while I was sitting in my Mom's hospital room very late at night. I knew that I needed more support than I currently had and was considering signing her up for hospice. It's the best thing I've done so far in my caregiver career!
When death looms
This article was written as a result of some research I did about the dying process in the elderly. I started off wanting information so I knew the signs and symptoms of dying to look for and then just became totally fascinated by the whole dying process.
The importance of routines when caring for the elderly
Routines may make the difference between a contented senior citizen and a confused one.
American attitudes toward the elderly
American attitudes toward the elderly (let me put it succinctly) suck...
Helping the bedridden
Mom broke her hip so here we sit - she's bedridden so I am trying to figure out how to help keep her mentally stimulated.
Adjusting the elderly to nursing home rehabilitation
Mom broke her hip 11/11/11 (wasn't such a lucky day for us....). I've had an entire education since that time about how to care for someone in rehab. You'll find loads of tips and things you might not think about in this Squidoo article.
Preventing falls in the elderly
Poor Mom feel 11/11/11 so, before I bring her home from rehabilitation, I have to "Gertie-proof" my house. Here's how I intent to prevent future falls.

For Mom's 95th birthday, we took her on a cruise

eldercare and caregivingAnd what a cruise it was! We had 26 foot seas - ugh. Mom and another friend were the only people out of 7 who did not get sick! What a trooper. Anyway, here's an article I wrote about how to prepare for a cruise with the elderly.. It's a must read if you're planning on this type of travel vacation with a senior citizen.

The picture is Mom on our beautiful balcony - hint #1 to cruising with the elderly - get the best and biggest cabin you can afford!

I am the caregiver to the loveliest eldest person around!

Handicap Walker Reviews

I've started to write some niche articles about handicap walkers and such and will be updating this section pretty frequently - that is, until I burn out.

Here's my latest articles.
Handicap Walkers
My mom has used a walker for the last 8 years or so. We've gone through quite a few until we found just the right one that met her current needs. This lens gives an overview of 2, 3 or 4-wheel handicap walkers.
The Duro-Med 3-Wheel Rollator
The first in my series of walker product reviews, the Duro-Med 3-Wheel Rollator is a walker for those not needing full support. This walker is as well suited to rolling around a park as heading to the kitchen. Check out the product specifications and see if it isn't just the right walker for your loved one.
Hugo Elite walker
This Hugo Elite walker is my favorite 4 wheel walker. It's even got a seat for when you tire and a saddlebag to carry a picnic lunch.
The Duro-Med 2 button adjustable folding walker
This is the walker my Mom uses. In fact, we have two of them - one for each floor of the house.
Drive Medical Fly Weight Transport Chair
This is the wheelchair we have - it's a companion chair so has small wheels and is very light - just 18 lbs.

My mom tells a "fishy" story

Now that Dad's gone, he's frequently the butt of our jokes. Well, if I were to be honest, even when he was alive, he was the butt of our jokes and took the ribbing in the best fashion imagined.

This video is of my darling Mom telling a story about fishing with Dad one time. It's a must see to believe.

That was really a heart touching lens. It makes me very emotional and I was seeing my grandma instead of your mother in that video. She is no more but she will always remain in our heart forever. I was quite unlucky that I can't see her in her last days, because she was being serviced from a home care agency at her last days.

Thanks so much for doing this lens. I am being thrust into a caregiver role for my 89 year old father next week, and feel so panicked and overwhelmed. Your articles and this lens are a blessing.

The best caregiver book

American Medical Association Guide to Home Caregiving

I wish I'd had this book when I first started caring for Mom. Having no children of my own (but being successful at keeping a pack of dogs alive), I figured I'd "get" it, eventually. I did recently buy this book and still found some great tips in it. I recommend it for anyone who is a going to be a caregiver.

And, another great book about being a caregiver

Chicken Soup for the Caregiver's Soul: Stories to Inspire Caregivers in the Home, the Community and the World (Chicken Soup for the Soul)

I love the Chicken soup books. This one is exceptionally good, imho.
