Portraits and Memories

Project Information

"I Can Remember", a poem, was composed by Scott Waterhouse in July of 1993 while he worked with individuals with Alzheimer's in a social day care program. The poem speaks to those caregivers that care for a memory impaired person, a subject of both personal and professional interest. Because of demand for a second print, the artist decided to devote time doing a series of 15 drawings with accompanying poems or prayers.

The concept for the series grew out of a sense of urgency for the public to better understand this disease. Alzheimer's disease is a progressive, degenerative disease of the brain. Persons suffering from Alzheimer's disease may experience confusion, memory loss, personality and behavioral changes, impaired judgment, and have difficulty finding words, finishing thoughts or following directions. Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementing illness. Its cause is unknown, and there is no cure. Approximately, five million Americans have Alzheimer's disease. It is the seventh leading cause of death among adults, taking more than 100,000 lives a year. Every 71 seconds, someone develops Alzheimer's. Unless a cure or means of prevention is found for Alzheimer's disease, more than 14 million Americans will be afflicted by the middle of the next century. Caregivers are affected by this disease, too. In a national survey, 19 million Americans said they have a family member with Alzheimer's disease, and 37 million said they knew someone with the disease. The direct and indirect costs of Alzheimer's and other dementias to Medicare, Medicaid, and businesses amount to more than $148 billion each year.

As a former program director and support group leader for an Alzheimer's program, Scott had the opportunity for close contact with many families and dementia patients. From these relationships he has been able to put to verse some of their feelings, and his own experiences. The artwork strives to give visual impact to the accompanying poems and prayers. The spirit of caring that emerges from discourse surrounding the drawings compelled the artist to produce the largest project of his career, "Portraits and Memories". And it still continues 15 years later, to inspire, encourage, and bring understanding to caregivers, professionals and families.

Architectural Renderings

Drawings of your home, office buildings, and churches

Architectural Renderings by Waterhouse

For the past 20 years, Scott has been producing architectural renderings of homes, churches, schools, universities, corporations, and commercial buildings. In addition, his renderings can help you brand your business or organization by reproducing your image on notecards, letterhead, marketing and advertising.
Architectural Renderings and home portraits are most often commissioned as Anniversary presents, Christmas presents, Birthday gifts, housewarming gifts, thank-you gifts, appreciation gifts, or a special memento when you move. Many churches, schools and universities have utilized Scott's talents over the years for fund raisers, historical preservation, as well as, make prints available for resale to the public. They make wonderful gifts for friends, family, or simply for yourself!
How is an Architectural Rendering Created?
Renderings are generally done from photographs. If the house is more than an hour of Waterhouse's Art Studio in NC, then all you do is provide photographs. Generally, the more photographs that are supplied, the better it will be for Scott to create the work. Please include one 8x10" photo of the entire structure and landscaping, if possible.
HELPFUL PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS
%u2022 The best time to photograph a building is either in the morning or late afternoon, especially when the sun is shining on it.
%u2022 You are most likely to get an interesting portrait if you shoot at a slight angle, showing a part of one side, as well as the front.
%u2022 No matter how far back you have to stand, try to get one shot of the whole building. If this is not possible, take two pictures, one of each half of the building. Be sure to stand in the same place for both pictures, turning your body to change the view of the building.
%u2022 Close-up detail photos are most helpful. Please take photos of windows, doorways, etc., especially if they are hidden by trees or shrubs.
%u2022 I will omit wires, cars, and people unless requested to do otherwise. Don't worry about the side of a neighboring building or the utility pole. They won't appear in the portrait unless you want them to.
When you send me your pictures, please enclose a note describing any minor details you may need changed such as adding more trees or shrubs or removing cars and power lines, etc. I will work with you to ensure that you will be satisfied with the final piece.

How long does a rendering take to finish?
A portrait usually takes 2-4 weeks to complete depending on the workload; however, some portraits can be done sooner. When placing your order, please let me know when you would like your portrait completed and I will do my best to fulfill your request.

Ready to order your Architectural Rendering?
There are two options:
On-site service: If you are within an hour of Waterhouse's Studio, I will be happy to come to your home and take photos, as well as discuss landscaping changes, etc.
Photo service: You may choose to send photographs along with the order form. Please see helpful photography tips above to get good quality photographs.
Place your photos in a photo mailer, or insert a piece of stiff cardboard into your envelope to keep photos from being damaged in the mail. If you are using valuable photos, you might consider making good quality color copies (even for black and white photos, because color copies are much more detailed), and sending those instead. If you would rather send the original photos, please ask for insurance from the Post Office. It is well worth the small cost.
