WAHM
A work at home parent is an entrepreneur who works from home and integrates parenting into his or her business activities. They are sometimes referred as WAHM (work at home mom) or WAHD (work at home dad).
Entrepreneurs choose to run businesses from home for a variety of reasons, including lower business expenses, personal health limitations, eliminating commuting or in order to have a more flexible schedule. This flexibility can give an entrepreneur more options when planning tasks, business and non-business, including parenting duties. While some home-based entrepreneurs opt for childcare outside the home, others integrate child rearing into their work day and workspace. The latter are considered work-at-home parents.
Many WAHPs start home-based businesses in order to care for their children while still creating income. The desire to care for one's own children, the incompatibility of a 9-to-5 work day with school hours or sick days, and the expense of childcare prompt many parents to change or leave their job in the workforce in order to be available to their children. Many WAHPs build a business schedule that can be integrated with their parenting duties.

Maturnity Leave is Over Now What? Can You Afford to go Back to Work? Part 1
To be a WAHM or go Back to work outside the home, that is the question.
Up here in the snow, north of the 49th parallel pregnant women look forward to a year maturnity leave of bon bons and tv paid for by the Canadian government. Ok, seriously, all mothers know that the first year with a child is not all bon bon's and TV, honest guys its true. Between diapers and feedings and crying and being up all night is it any wonder that going back to work outside the home looks so good? Well, for some the prospect of going back to work after maturnity leave is depressing and they start asking the question, "Can we afford for me to stay home."The real question is, "can you afford to go back to work?" huh?!! Did I just make a typo? No I didn't, the question is "can you afford to go back to work?" Most times when mothers are trying to decide whether or not to stay home they look at the paycheque and feel they have to go back to work. Lets put this into perspective though, get out a pen and paper your going to need it. Answer the following questions as honestlly as possible all amounts are to be on a per month basis:
1. How much will transportation to and from work cost, don't forget the parking for those days your running late and need to drive downtown. Did you factor in the gas?
2. How much for a new wardrobe, lets face it not all of us can get back into the pre pregnancy one. Besides, after a year how many of your clothes are still in style these days? Did you remember to factor in nylons? Make up? Accessories?

My Biggest Challenge When Working from Home
There are so many distractions when you work from home, the kids, the TV, the laundry, or friends dropping in. There are also issues with those who think your business is a hobby and don't support you but interupt you with requests and non business demands. My biggest challenge though, is stopping at the time I designated as end of work day and start of family time.As my husband is away working I am left with all the responsibilities of running the house and caring for the kids. This in itself is a huge distraction but what I can't seem to do is stick to a scheduled work day. "I'll work 'til 5:00 then make dinner and clean up," by about 6:00 the kids have had a few snacks and I'm still trying to finish up a few tasks on the computer or phone.
To succeed at home you need to have a scheduled work time. A set time table for when you are working and everyone else leaves you alone to do it. You need a place with a door you can close and you need to commit to doing work at this time.
Not easy is it, especially when you have little ones. Depending on your child's age will depend on what hours you can realistically work. This lens will be bringing you tips and links for working with the different age groups, babies, toddlers and preschoolers. So check back for more tips.
If you don't take your business seriously, no one will. If you want support and respect for your business commitments you will have to demand them, even before you start making money. If you are serious about what you do and enforce a time schedule to work, then others will get the message. For some it may take longer, but stick to it and even the most stubborn distraction will come around.
Are you Considering A Direct Sales Business? What You need to Know Part 1
The first 7 points to consider...
In all forums there are women looking for opportunities to work from home and stay home with their children. There are lots of scams out there and there are lots of legitimate opportunities. Direct Sales has been around for decades and means selling directly to people via relationships. Direct Sales reps work out of their homes and many pick the wrong company and think all direct sales companies must be terrible. Not all, some are very good and others not so much. There are a number of items you need to think about when assessing a direct sales company. Here are a few, if you have any questions or would like to read a review on the company please check out Carenndy Solutions for more information.
1) Do you love the product, is it something you will use?
2) How much is it to sign up and what is included? Is it worth the investment? The kit should include more product than the sign up fee and be diverse enough that you don't have too many of the same item.
3) What are the requirements for remaining a rep? Do you have to purchase a certain amount each month or each quarter to remain a rep? Can you fit the bill if you don't sell anything during that period or is it an unreasonable amount?
4) Training, is there any and if so where does it originate? Head office or your recruiter?
5) Are you going to receive enough help to get going? The hardest part is the start up.
6) What are the restrictions of the company? Are you only allowed to sell in certain areas? Can you enter only so many events? Can you sell online? Are you allowed to have an independent website? Is it exclusive and you can't sell anything else?
7)Do you know anyone that uses that product or a competitors product?

Considering a Home Based Business in Direct Sales? What You Need to Know Part 2
In Part one I listed 7 points to consider when analysing an opportunity in direct sales, heres the next 7 points to consider:8)What is the reputation of the company? Check with both the DSA and CDSA this is the Direct sales association, and the Canadian Direct Sales Association.
9) How much are the supplies, catalogs etc?
10) How much is the product? Is it expensive in your opinion? Is it something that that you will have to convince others to stop using what they already use to buy yours. How large is the market place. Is it something that anyone will buy or is it very specific and if it's specific is the market saturated with consultants or competition?
11) What are the margins, or what is the % that you keep for each sale? It should be 35% or more, otherwise you'll be working lots for little return.
12) What is the return policy of the company? Do they stand by their product with a good warrenty or leave you out in the cold? Do they have a return policy in place for the rep if they decide to leave and want to return their inventory
13) What is the hostess program like? Would it entice you to host a party? Who pays for the hostess gifts and incentives - the company or does it come out of your pocket?
14) How many reps are in your area? Is the market saturated? 1000 people per rep is considered standard but I would say that to survive you shouldn't sign up with any company tht has less than 5 000 people per rep.
Only 3% of reps are considered exceptional successes, most struggle to get by and many fail. If you want to make a living as a direct sales rep you will need to plan and research first, take the business seriously and commit. The company has to be structured to enable you to have support and time to succeed. I hope these points helped keep checking back for more advice on starting a business and how best to pick one.

Entrepreneur
An entrepreneur is a person who has possession of an enterprise, or venture, and assumes significant accountability for the inherent risks and the outcome. It is an ambitious leader who combines land, labor, and capital to create and market new goods or services.
The term is a loanword from French and was first defined by the Irish economist Richard Cantillon. Entrepreneur in English is a term applied to the type of personality who is willing to take upon herself or himself a new venture or enterprise and accepts full responsibility for the outcome. Jean-Baptiste Say, a french economist, believed to be coined the word Entrepreneur first in about at 1800. He said an entrepreneur is "one who undertakes an enterprise, especially a contractor, acting as intermediatory between capital and labour".Guide to Management Ideas and Gurus, Tim Hindle, The Economist, page 77,
Entrepreneurship is often difficult and tricky, resulting in many new ventures failing. The word entrepreneur is often synonymous with founder. Most commonly, the term entrepreneur applies to someone who creates value by offering a product or service, by carving out a niche in the market that may not exist currently. Entrepreneurs tend to identify a market opportunity and exploit it by organizing their resources effectively to accomplish an outcome that changes existing interactions within a given sector.
Observers see them as being willing to accept a high level of personal, professional or financial risk to pursue opportunity.
Business entrepreneurs are viewed as fundamentally important in the capitalistic society. Some distinguish business entrepreneurs as either "political entrepreneurs" or "market entrepreneurs," while social entrepreneurs' principal objectives include the creation of a social and/or environmental benefit.

Review of the Arbonne Direct Sales Business
When I was approached by a friend to become an Arbonne consultant, I was too sleep deprived to see "the gift". I had never envisioned myself in any direct sales or home based business, but Arbonne has certainly changed my life. With all the direct sales companies popping up how do you know that Arbonne is the right choice right now? Arbonne was founded in the United States in 1980 with a vision to provide products unparalleled in quality and effectiveness. Arbonne uses the power of network marketing to distribute it's products. Network marketing is simply a distribution
system or form of marketing which channels goods or services from manufacturer to the consumer, through a "network" of independent distributors or consultants. According to the World Federation of Direct Selling Associations, the network marketing industry in the United States has grown from $16 billion to over $29 billion in direct sales over the past 10 years. The benefits of direct selling or network marketing include low start up cost (just $39.99 for Arbonne), minimal overhead, hands-on way to sell product one-on-one, face to face selling builds tremendous long-term client loyalty, and the business impacts a Consultants life directly with rewards and compensation. In a traditional business, the company leverages the employees' time. You trade your time for their dollars. With network marketing, you earn based not only on the time and effort you expend, you also benefit from time leveraging by finding others to do the same. Information on different Work at Home Business Opportunities
Multi Level Marketing
Direct Selling is a retail channel for the distribution of goods and services. At a basic level it may be defined as marketing and selling products, direct to consumers away from a fixed retail location. Sales are typically made through party plan, one to one demonstrations, and other personal contact arrangements. A text book definition is: "The direct personal presentation, demonstration, and sale of products and services to consumers, usually in their homes or at their jobs."Michael A. Belch George E. Belch Advertising and Promotion: An Integrated Marketing Communications Perspective, 7/e., McGraw-Hill/Irwin, 2006
Industry representative, the World Federation of Direct Selling Associations (WFDSA), reports that its 59 regional member associations accounted for more than US$114 Billion in retail sales in 2007, through the activities of more than 62 million independent sales representatives.WFDSA - What is Direct Selling?
According to the WFDSA, consumers benefit from direct selling because of the convenience and service it provides, including personal demonstration and explanation of products, home delivery, and generous satisfaction guarantees. In contrast to franchising, the cost for an individual to start an independent direct selling business is typically very low with little or no required inventory or other cash commitments to begin.
The United States Direct Selling Association (DSA) reported that in 2000, 55% of adult Americans had at some time purchased goods or services from a direct selling representative and 20% reported that they were currently(6%) or had been in the past(14%) a direct selling representative.DSA - What is Direct Selling
Most direct selling associations, including the Bundesverband Direktvertrieb Deutschland, the direct selling association of Germany, and the WFDSA and DSA require their members to abide by a code of conduct towards a fair partnership both with customers and salesmen. Most national direct selling associations are represented in the World Federation of Direct Selling Associations (WFDSA).
Direct Selling is distinct from Direct Marketing because it is about individual sales agents reaching and dealing directly with clients. Direct Marketing is about business organizations seeking a relationship with their customers without going through an agent/consultant or retail outlet.
By far the majority of Direct Selling companies use a multi-level compensation plan, where the agent is paid not only for their own sales but also a percentage of the sales of other representatives they introduce into the organization and help train.Direct Selling by the Numbers - 2007
Some of the world's largest direct selling companies include Avon Products, Amway, NuSkin and Tupperware.

Making the Decision - should I or shouldn't I work from home? Part 1
You're a mom, congratulations! Now comes the hard part, deciding if you are going to stay home or go back to work. Each decision will have benefits and shortfalls, so how do you decide?First of all it is very important to note that neither decision is wrong, neither decision is correct. What I mean by this statement is that only you can make the best decision for you and your family. Staying home isn't for everyone, but neither is going back into the workforce. Working from home enables you to enjoy both, but you may not be able to succeed due to so much else that is going on around you. What I want to get across is that your decision is yours to make and no one should tell you it was the wrong one.
So how do you make the decision? One way is to just make it and see how it feels. Right now decide that the best choice is for you to go back to work, take away the option of staying home. How do you feel about that? Now do it the other way and decide to stay home. How do you feel about that choice? So if you were able to make a decision then your done, if not keep reading.
The next step is to ask yourself,"how do I want to spend my time?" Time is the only commodity we have that cannot be increased or decreased by anything we do. We all get 24 hours in a day, 7 days a week, and 52 weeks in a year. No matter what you do you cannot obtain more. Each second clicks by to a minute and each minute passes to make an hour. You cannot speed up time or slow it down. All you can do is choose how you will spend it.
So start by making a list of everything you spend time doing. What is the most important thing you do in a day? Give it a value of 10. Now in comparison to this number one priority what is the value of everything else you do in a day? ie. Spending time with your baby - 10. Watching TV - 4. Time with spouse - 10. Talking with friends - 9, Grocery Shopping - 6. Review the list to make sure you didn't miss anything. Now you have a list of priorities.
Here's the catch, every women's top priority is going to be spending time with their children. This is a fact, but also causes a problem in the equation and to understand this problem we need to look at how many hours a week you want to spend on each priority. So how many hours a week is acceptible to spend working? How many hours is acceptible to spend commuting? How many hours a week do you want to spend with your child? Now organize your list with the highest amount of hours to the lowest. Compare this list with your priority list. What do you find? How does this make you feel? Are you comfortible with how you will be spending your time? If you are you are done, if not then read on.

If you are anything like me it is easy to loose focus and start off on tangents with your business, trying things and adding things that have nothing to do with your core business. One of the books I am reading right now is Seth Godin's book, Small is the New Big. I bought this book instead of another only because it had three dolls and the front and my 5 year old insisted that was the one I should get. Of course she thought it had to do with dolls. I have found some real diamonds in the few pages I have read, one of which is to stay focused, expand your target audience based on that what you already do, not find a new target and try to do both.Click For the Rest of the article on staying focused on target market.

Electronic Commerce, commonly known as (electronic marketing) e-commerce or eCommerce', consists of the buying and selling of products or services over electronic systems such as the Internet and other computer networks. The amount of trade conducted electronically has grown extraordinarily with widespread Internet usage. The use of commerce is conducted in this way, spurring and drawing on innovations in electronic funds transfer, supply chain management, Internet marketing, online transaction processing, electronic data interchange (EDI), inventory management systems, and automated data collection systems. Modern electronic commerce typically uses the World Wide Web at least at some point in the transactions lifecycle, although it can encompass a wider range of technologies such as e-mail as well.
A large percentage of electronic commerce is conducted entirely electronically for virtual items such as access to premium content on a website, but most electronic commerce involves the transportation of physical items in some way. Online retailers are sometimes known as e-tailers and online retail is sometimes known as e-tail. Almost all big retailers have electronic commerce presence on the World Wide Web.
Electronic commerce that is conducted between businesses is referred to as business-to-business or B2B. B2B can be open to all interested parties (e.g. commodity exchange) or limited to specific, pre-qualified participants (private electronic market). Electronic commerce that is conducted between businesses and consumers, on the other hand, is referred to as business-to-consumer or B2C. This is the type of electronic commerce conducted by companies such as Amazon.com.
Electronic commerce is generally considered to be the sales aspect of e-business. It also consists of the exchange of data to facilitate the financing and payment aspects of the business transactions.
