The 2012 Mazda3 made its international debut at the New York Auto Show, boasting a more refined interior and exterior, representing at the same time the first application in North America of Mazda's innovative SKYACTIV fuel-saving and performance-oriented technologies. Thus, the car model achieves 40 mpg on the highway. According to Jim O'Sullivan, Mazda North American Operations, SKYACTIV is not just an engine as it proves to be the next generation of advanced vehicle performance and efficiency, embodying the philosophy of engineering vehicles that are fun to drive and environmental-friendly. SKYACTIV will be available in either the sedan or hatchback models and mated to a standard SKYACTIV-MT six-speed manual transmission or optional SKYACTIV-Drive six-speed automatic transmission. The 2012 Mazda3 delivers 155HP at 6,000 rpm and 148 lb-ft of torque at 4,100 rpm.

Fuel economy, which was possible due to the combining of all the best features of the technology in today's transmissions, also gets a boost from the combination of a SKYACTIV engine and transmissions, achieving an EPA rating of 40 mpg on the highway. City mpg for the sedan version also improves by 17 percent to 28 mpg and it gets to 27 city/39 highway when it is equipped with the SKYACTIV-MT six-speed manual transmission.

Providing 167 hp at 6,000 rpm and 168 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm, the MZR 2.5-liter engine is available with a six-speed manual transmission or a five-speed electronically-controlled automatic with manual shift control.

The sporty and exciting handling has provided Maza3 with a solid reputation, emphasizing consistency between the driver's expectations and the car's response. The body of the 2012 Mazda3 also has been further reinforced for greater rigidity, improving upon the current model's already stellar agility and handling stability. Its exterior appearance was improved by a new front fascia and updated five-point grille opening for both sedan and hatchback styles and by the use of more sculpted forms around the openings on the outside edge of the front bumper and a rounded fog lamp shape. The interior proves style and refinement by the use of black throughout the center stack and shift gate to provide an even bolder look, while silver-colored, satin-polished details were added to areas frequently operated by consumers.

Higher trim levels (Touring and Grand Touring) receive a different three-dimensional seat fabric pattern to create a richer expression of quality on the black fabric.

All Mazda3s, regardless of trim level or engine choice, will continue to feature Mazda's own highly rigid safety body structure, which incorporates crushable outer zones that absorb impact energy, and Mazda's Triple H construction, which applies H-shaped reinforcements to the floor, side frames and roof to suppress cabin deformation and minimize the likelihood of bodily injury during an impact.

The idea of a four-seater that can play boy racer and satisfy its driver as well as any sports car seems like and inherent contradiction. But that is exactly what Mazda has tried to deliver with its brand-new RX-8. This is a major about-face from Mazda's final RX-7, which garnered passionate praise for its performance, handling, and sporting character. Dedicated to the proposition that anything that didn't bolster its performance was superfluous, the RX-7 was light and tiny, with sheet mental that seemed to be shrink wrapped around its mechanical bits and twin seats.

Unfortunately, this intense sporting focus made it supremely impractical, a flaw that was ultimately ultimately unsatisfying to the buyers who could afford its lofty price, which was fast approaching $40,000 when it left the U.s market in 1995. Mazda was determined the RX-8 would not suffer the same shortcomings.

As a result, not only does the RX-8 have plenty of room for its two front-seat occupants, but it also has a pair of rear seats. Moreover, these rear seats are touted as adult-sized and access to them is assisted by a pair of rear-hinged, pickup style door lets. No one will be criticizing this particular RX for its practical shortcomings.

That's all well and good, but buyers also expect that any Mazda wearing and RX designation will also be a serious sporting machine. To that end, the RX-8 benefits from an all-new chassis and a major revision of the traditional rotary engine. The new chassis places great emphasis on rigidity, achieving about twice the bending and torsional stiffness of the last RX-7, thanks to extensive use of computerized design techniques and the reinforcement of the drive line tunnel, effectively turning it into a backbone frame.

Although the front and rear suspensions might sound similar on paper to the old RX-7's, they are actually all-new. In front, each wheel is located by a pair of forged aluminum control arms, which are about 1.3 inches longer than their RX-7 counterparts and provide improved geometry. Gas-pressurized mono tube shock absorbers with coil springs and a hollow anti-roll bar control the excursions of this suspension, and the wheels are directed by a steering rack that employs fully electronic power assistance.

Almost all other manufacturer were struggling to stay afloat a few years ago, Subaru continued to post highest gains.

The Impreza line begins modestly with 2.5i, priced at just $20,995 and it includes Subaru's trademark all-wheel-drive, air conditioning and the same inventory of safety features found on the top-of-the-line, $42,495 Impreza WRX STi.

All Imprezas, which are available as a sedan or a hatchback, have the same engine - a 2.5-litre four - cylinder. It's a "horizontally opposed" layout, meaning two cylinders lie flat on one side, two on the other. It's a durable design and easy to package, but Subarus have never been known for their fuel mileage or their smooth, quiet idle, and the test WRX was no exception.

In the Impreza, that engine pumps out 170 horsepower. For our WRX, That engine is turbocharged, and has 265 horses. In the STi, it's further massaged to produce 305 horsepower.

Last year, the WRX just looked like a hot-rodded Impreza, but this year, it gets the STi's two-inch-wider body, flared fenders, bigger tires and wheels and a lot more attitude.
