When the president of the Miami Chamber of Commerce is found dead inside a suitcase with his legs sawn off and a rubber alligator stuffed down his throat, news and police locals prefer to believe it's simply another typical South Florida crime. But when letters from a terrorist group, Las Noches de Diciembre, link the man's death to the disappearances of a visiting Shriner and a Canadian tourist, former newsman (now private eye) Brian Keyes intuits that someone is out to kill Florida's tourist trade. His investigation leads him to an old journalism crony obsessed with fury against the state's irresponsible development policies.
Carl Hiaasen At A Glance
Carl Hiaasen is simply a fascinating person. While perhaps best known as the author of eight best-selling novels including Sick Puppy and Tourist Season, he also has an outstanding reputation as an investigative journalist. A three-time Pulitzer Prize nominee, Carl is a columnist at The Miami Herald and has written over 1300 pieces exposing land corruption scams, drug smuggling rings, dangerous doctors, and corrupt politicians. And since real life in South Florida is sometimes stranger than fiction, none of these subjects are spared in his novels. Hiaasen's books skewer the greedy and corrupt with intelligence and humor, combining mystery plotlines, wicked satire, sharp observations, and a bizarre cast of characters. With his insight, humor and a killer instinct for stories, Hiaasen has certainly earned the respect of his contemporaries. Dave Barry, his colleague at The Miami Herald, calls him "one of South Florida's most vital natural resources, a relentlessly sane voice in a howling hurricane of hypocrisy, hokum and hype''.
What does Carl talk about? -- Live and In Person
Carl Hiaasen is one of the most interesting writers of the century. His knowledge of the elements of sleaze and quirkiness underlying life in Florida make for hilarious and unbelievable stories. On a more serious level, his insights into human nature and the state of America at the dawn of the 21st century are unique and perceptive. Tying it all together through a constant interplay of fact and fiction, Carl gives his audience unique insight into the creative process. Carl will show you an America you've never seen before. And in spite of his scathingly funny critiques of the seedy side of American business and politics, his belief in good shines through. Carl inspires his audience to appreciate beauty, critique seediness and corruption, and laugh at the absurdity of all of it.

- I'm a huge fan of Hiaasen and his buddy Dave Barry. I used to have the Hearld bookmarked so I could read his column. He reminds me of Douglas Adams and Donald Westlake.
Thanks a bunch for this!
