Dreams, Intuition, Myth, Imagination, Story, Symbol, and Sign: The World of the Unconscious

Dr. Carl Jung was and still is an inspiration for creativity. His work offered an alternative to fearing the unknown about what it meant to be human during the Twentieth Century.

Here you'll find a statement about his importance to the field of psychology and links to some of my favorite web pages.

Carl G. Jung, a Depth Psychologist who believed we have the solutions to life's problems within ourselves

Carl G. Jung was an analytical psychiatrist. He began his studies as a student of Freud. As he matured, Dr. Jung realized he disagreed with Freud and his concept of the unconscious.

Jung believed that we have a collective unconscious. In other words, as a species human beings share a realm of symbols that have meanings which are important for the species and not just the individual.

Dr. Jung believed that our unconscious minds connected us to the soul and that the mythology of cultures from around the world demonstrated this. He said the heroes and heroines of mythology are symbols that represented the archetypes of our collective unconscious. He also believed that people who had lost perspective by identifying with the archetypes acted out of balance with their true nature.

As an analytical psychiatrist, Carl G. Jung also believed dreams are lenses into the soul. Through dream work which involved a therapeutic process called "active imagination" his patients became familiar with their "shadow" side and put their inner lives into a balanced perspective.

Carl G. Jung also believed in the animus, the male aspect in females and the anima, the female aspect in males. He said that men and women disown these aspects of themselves and misunderstand each other because they mistakenly attribute the thoughts and feelings they have to the other gender through a process known as projection. In other words, men who disowned the feminine aspects of themselves tended to stereotype women and deny thoughts and feelings of their own which are similar to those of the women in their lives.

Carl G. Jung believed in the creative unconscious. For him, the unconscious mind held solutions for us as individuals and as cultures.

What Wikipedia has to say

Carl Gustav Jung (; 26 July 1875 ? 6 June 1961) was a Swiss psychiatrist, an influential thinker and the founder of analytical psychology (also known as Jungian psychology). Jung's approach to psychology has been influential in the field of depth psychology and in countercultural movements across the globe. Jung is considered as the first modern psychologist to state that the human psyche is "by nature religious" and to explore it in depth. He emphasized understanding the psyche through exploring the worlds of dreams, art, mythology, religion and philosophy. Although he was a theoretical psychologist and practicing clinician, much of his life's work was spent exploring other areas, including Eastern and Western philosophy, alchemy, astrology, sociology, as well as literature and the arts. His most notable ideas include the concept of psychological archetypes, the collective unconscious and synchronicity.

Jung emphasized the importance of balance and harmony. He cautioned that modern people rely too heavily on science and logic and would benefit from integrating spirituality and appreciation of unconscious realms. He considered the process of individuation necessary for a person to become whole. This is a psychological process of integrating the conscious with the unconscious while still maintaining conscious autonomy.[http://soultherapynow.com/articles/individuation.html Jung's Individuation process] Retrieved on 2009-2-20 Individuation was the central concept of analytical psychology.

Jung's unique and broadly influential approach to psychology emphasized understanding the psyche through exploring the worlds of dreams, art, mythology, world religion and philosophy. Though not the first to analyze dreams, he has become perhaps the most well known pioneer in the field of dream analysis. Although he was a theoretical psychologist and practicing clinician for most of his life, much of his life's work was spent exploring other realms: Eastern vs. Western philosophy, alchemy, astrology, sociology, as well as literature and the arts. Jung also emphasized the importance of balance. He cautioned that modern humans rely too heavily on science and logic and would benefit from integrating spirituality and appreciation of the unconscious realm. Interestingly, Jungian ideas are not typically included in curriculum of most major universities' psychology departments, but are occasionally explored in humanities departments.

Many pioneering psychological concepts were originally proposed by Jung. Some of these are:

* The Archetype

* The Collective Unconscious

* The Complex

* Synchronicity

In addition, the popular career test currently offered by high school and college career centers, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, is entirely based upon Jung's theories.

Carl G. Jung was Terrific!

Dr. Jung wrote about the "collective unconscious," "archetypes," "animus," and "anima," "synchronicity," "active imagination," and spirituality. These are a few of the concepts he used to guide him when encouraging his patients to express the symbols from their dreams.

    Carl G. Jung who believed we have the solutions to life's problems within ourselves..

    I think he was right ,once we see that our problem is being unconscious about our problems ! Socrates said it this way 'Know thyself' and Jesus said it this way
    'Physician,heal thyself ' and Buddha said it this way 'be a lamp unto yourself

After I read Memories Dreams and Reflections I didn't think I'd ever stop reading Jung. but alas...I am especially interested in what he says about mythology. What a man - we are so lucky to have had him..

    Nice lens to get us thinking and I enjoyed watching the videos. Carl Jung's belief that symbols or archetypes are deeply embedded in the human psyche and that we respond to them instinctively has always been a source of inspiration for artists.
    I give you 5 stars and I Favorite It.
