Carlisle Cullen is most commonly referred to as the patriarch of the Cullen family. By far the oldest of the Cullens, he is over 300 years old but his physical age (the age at which he was turned into a vampire) is 23.

When the Cullens move to a new area he usually pretends to be older, and can get away with staying in an area until the supposed age of around 35, before people grow suspicious of his youthful appearance and they have to move on.

Carlisle is husband to Esme Cullen, and together they play the part of adoptive parents to Edward, Emmett and Alice Cullen, and Rosalie and Jasper Hale.

The physical description of Carlisle in Stephenie Meyer's Twilight Saga is that he looks like a model; has blond hair, and is slender but muscular.

Carlisle is a skilled surgeon, and works at the local Forks hospital when Bella arrives in town. He has a theory that when humans turn into vampires, one of their previous human skills will be enhanced in vampire form. While Carlisle does not possess any special talents (like Alice's visions or Edward's mind reading) he believes he has the enhanced ability of compassion,

Carlisle, having lived the "vegetarian" vampire lifestyle for centuries, is not at all tempted by human blood. Unlike the others, who still have to fight their urge to drink from humans, Carlisle is not affected at all, allowing him to work as an excellent doctor, with decades of medical experience.

Carlisle Cullen was the son of an Anglican pastor, born in 1640s London, England, during a time of religious upheaval. His father was a hunter of that very thing he was to become - vampires - along with witches and werewolves, and other creatures of the night, Carlisle was expected to assist his father in his pursuit of evil, and one night, while leading a hunt for a vampire, he was attacked and bitten, left to die on the streets. He hid away, enduring the painful transformation. Repulsed by what he had become, he tried many times to take his own life, but was unable to due to his new immortality.

Carlisle never drank from humans, choosing instead to feed from passing deer when the thirst became too much. Realising he could avoid feeding on humans, he only ever drank from wild animals, and was eventually able to resist human blood enough to become a doctor and help those in need.

Peter Facinelli has previously mentioned in interviews that when he originally auditioned for the role of Carlisle, he didn't get it. The role was offered to somebody else, but they eventually turned the part down due to scheduling issues, and Peter was called back for the role.

While Peter is thankful to that actor for not taking the part, he has never revealed who that actor was. However, it is known that Henry Cavill was offered the role. Stephenie Meyer once revealed that she had cast the characters in her head before the film was made.

The only man she could imagine playing Edward Cullen was Henry Cavill, but by the time the film was due to be cast, he was too old to play the role, so he was offered the role of Carlisle instead. He had to turn it down due to filming schedules clashing with his role as Charles Brandon in the TV series The Tudors. So one would assume that this is the actor Peter refers to. As well as The Tudors, he also starred in Stardust as Humphrey and Tristan and Isolde as Melot.

Who did Stephenie want for the role in her imaginary casting? She envisioned Carlisle being played by an actor named Charlie Hunnam. Charlie is an English actor who starred in the British TV series Queer as Folk, and who has also appeared in Cold Mountain, Children of Men, and the TV series Sons of Anarchy.
