Make Carne Guisada from Left Over Brisket

Around this house we do everything we can to save money. One practice we employ is purchasing large quantities of meats on sale. A large Brisket, cooked on our smoker, can feed our family over several meals.

So, you ask, what do you do with all the left over brisket? Eat some, freeze some, and make Carne Guisada!

Can you use brisket to make Carne Guisada? You sure can! You can make Carne Guisada the traditional way (I've included a video recipe for you), but my left over Brisket to Carne Guisada method is pretty darn good.

What is Carne Guisada?

Carne Guisada is beef stew. The gravy in the stew is thick, so Carne Guisada makes a hearty meal. In most Mexican restaurants you will find Carne Guisada served up in a tortilla as a taco. It can also be served over rice, noodles, or all by itself.

What you need:

1 pound cooked Brisket fat removed cubed with about 1/4 cup au juice from cooking
1/3 cup chopped onion
1 package brown gravy mix (1 cup size)

In a fry pan heat your Brisket and onion until the au juice begins to simmer. Measure 3/4 cup of water and mix in your gravy mix. Add the gravy to the Brisket and allow to simmer for 30 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking and promote the Brisket cubes to shred some.

Your Carne Guisada can be served on tortillas with Spanish rice and pinto beans for a typical Tex-Mex dish.

You can also serve your Carne Guisada on steamed rice with a tossed salad.

You can easily make this Carne Guisada similar to Beef Stroganoff by stirring in 1/2 cup sour cream just before serving. Spoon over cooked wide egg noodles.

I found this lens in the Discovery Tool on one of my own lenses (my huevos rancheros lens), so I had to come look. I'd not heard of this dish. I like the idea of making it into something similar to beef stroganoff. Thanks for the ideas!
