November Carnival of Squid
The Carnival of Squid highlights the best lenses on a specific topic for the day. I'm looking for your best submissions and for you to vote for your favorites. The top vote getters will be featured on the Carnival blog each week, along with a Barker's Best. Good luck!!
How it works:
- Have a lens for a day's topic? Add it to the list.
- Like the topic but don't have a lens? Make one (a great one!) and add it.
- Check out the lenses for the day's topic and vote for the ones you like (or don't).
- Visit the Carnival of Squid every week to see which lenses made the cut.
Week 1
November 2: The Dakotas
North Dakota and South Dakota joined the union back in 1889 as the 39th and 40th states, respectively. They aren't exactly the hot tourist locations in the US, despite being home to tons of history and gigantic president heads. Let's give them their due today - tell me about great things to see, people who hail from the Dakotas or fill us in on the history of the region.

November 3: Comedians
Think you're funny? Can you make someone laugh? A lot? If so, maybe you have something on our birthday kids today - Roseanne Barr and Dennis Miller are celebrating. Stand-up comedians have a tougher job than most people realize. And anyone who can make us laugh deserves credit for the skill. So tell me about your favorite comedian today and what make them great.

November 4: King Tut
Wow - less than 100 years ago, they found the entrance to King Tut's tomb in Egypt. (Naturally. wouldn't have been in Cambodia, now would it?) We've been enthralled with the boy king every since. So tell me about him? Did the exhibit come through your town? (Great idea for a photo lens!) Maybe you think Tut's a bit of hype and we should pay more attention to one of the other pharaohs? Or you want to share your love of Egyptology and explain that whole pharaoh system to us? Share!!!

November 5: Guy Fawkes Day
Remember, remember, the fifth of November ... .
I first heard of this holiday several years ago when my husband worked for a couple of Brits and we were invited to a bonfire. In some ways, this is like some American holidays where we celebrate but aren't quite sure just what it is anymore that we're actually celebrating. A day off of work, most of the time. So here's your chance to educate us on Guy and just why he wanted to blow up Parliament. Or maybe you want to lay off the heavy politics and just tell us you to make a Guy Fawkes effigy or the best way to celebrate the day.

November 6: John Phillip Sousa
Seventy-six trombones lined ... oh, wait, wrong band. Ha! Patriotic marches are the theme for today for sure thanks to the lovely John Philip Sousa, whose birthday we celebrate today. Explain the history behind Sousa's songs, tell me about Sousa himself or make a case for why the sousaphone is the best of the big brass.

November 9: Guinness World Records Day
Hold a record? Trying for a record? Just like records? It's a day for celebrating the biggest ones of them all - the Guinness World Records. Tell me about the weirdest, the funniest, the hardest, the oldest, the newest - whichever of the records is the most interesting to you!

November 10: Sesame Street
It's hard to remember there once was a world without Sesame Street, but for the past 40 years, we've had the joy of sunny days that take our cares away. At the risk of being completely innundated, give me your best Sesame Street-related lens. (Just don't bore me with things that are just product listings, OK?) Favorite characters, trips to Sesame place, music from the show - all are fair game!

November 11: Veterans and Remembrance Day
On Nov. 11, 1918, fighting in World War I came to an end with the signing of an armistice between the Allies and Germany. In honor of that day and the soldiers who fought in the war, Veterans Day in the US and Remembrance Day in Canada was established. Share a story of your favorite vet, tell about the heroes from your hometown or explain what the day means to you. And say thank you.

November 12: Immigration
Back in 1954, the iconic Ellis Island closed after processing more than 20 million immigrants since opening in New York Harbor in 1892. Immigrants come to the US from all directions these days as well as other countries. This is a bit of a large topic as well as a hot bed for debate. How about a monkey brain on the pros and cons of open borders? Maybe you're from an immigrant family and want to tell the story of why you immigrated. Got some big ideas on what could be done to handle the challenges of immigration? It's all up for grabs today.

November 13: World Kindness Day
Time to show some extra kindness to those around you. The goal of World Kindness Day is to make the world just that much nicer of a place, to remind us that we have more in common than we remember and that it just takes a little to make a difference. Share ways you've discovered to show kindness, tell of a kindness you'd like to see happen or your perspective on how the world could become a kinder place.

November 16: The Sound of Music
Fifty years ago tonight, the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical "The Sound of Music" opened on Broadway. Eventually there was the movie, also starring Jule Andrews, but before that, there was the book. Tell me things that are in the book or the stage version that aren't the movie. Fill me in on the real story, tell me about Hitler's youth, show me the route through the mountains the Von Trapp family took. Take the reality or the fictional route!!
November 17: Homemade Bread Day
Whether baguettes, ciabatta, whole wheat, loaf or whatever, there is nothing like the smell of homemade bread baking in the oven. Got a great recipe? Know some neat tricks to make it easier? Want to get all scientific on me explaining how the yeast and sugar work to make it rise? Lay it on me. (I'll supply the butter!)

November 18: Push Button Phone Day
In 1963, Bell Telephone introduces the push button phone. And the world rejoiced!! Given how much our phones do these days, push-button technology just seems so ... lame. But the jump from rotary to push button was a big, big, big deal. Since then, we've advanced to voice dial, one-button memory dialing and way more. Tell me, what's the best piece of technological advance you have on your phone? Think it gives push buttons a run for their money?

November 19: "Have A Bad Day" Day
In 1959, Ford stopped production of the unpopular Edsel. In 1919, the Senate rejected the Treaty of Versailles. In 1990, Milli Vanilli was stripped of its Grammy after admitting they didn't actually sing. This has been a bad day for many people over the years. So have a bad one yourself, OK? What makes for a bad day, anyway? Share your opinion, thoughts, solutions!

November 20: Pesticides
Back in 1969, the Nixon administration announced a halt to residential use of the pesticide DDT as part of a total phase-out. Now, as an avowed mosquito hater, I'm not always sure this was a good thing. And there's a case to be made for and against certain pesticides. Here's your chance - argue for bringing back DDT. Argue for banning all pesticides. Explain the science of pesticides - both the good they do and the harm they can cause. Debate, discuss, deliver something solid here!

November 23: Fibonacci Sequence Day
Fibonacci came out of the math closet with the Da Vinci Code, playing a key role as a solution to a puzzle. And with today's date (done like we Americans write it!) as the first four digits of the sequence, maybe it's time to learn more! The sequence is revealed in nature in all kinds of ways. How about explaining that? A picture gallery of examples? Conspiracy theories that involve Fibonacci? Hmmm ...

November 24: Win Friends
Dale Carnegie celebrates a birthday today. (Well, not really as he was born in 1888 and isn't around anymore.) As the brain behind the classic book "How to Win Friends and Influence People" lets look today at ways in which we can win more friends. (No, bribing doesn't count!) I could see lenses on how to make small talk, places to go to meet more people, tips on moving from acquaintance to friendship. In this day of "friends" on every social network, how can you tell who's really a friend and how can you make a deeper relationship with people you never see? Lots to talk about here!

November 25: Twins
It's birthday time for the daughters of President George W. Bush. Twins Barbara and Jenna celebrate today, so let's take up the topic of twins today. My brother has a pair and it's a different kettle of fish when you start talking parenting a set rather than a single. Got tips on coping with twins or creative ideas for ... anything related to them? Want to share about famous twins or do a tribute to your own twin? Let's see it!

November 26: Fraternities/Sororities
Back in 1825, the first college social fraternity, Kappa Alpha, was formed at Union College in Schenectady, N.Y. Today is a salute to all college fraternities and sororities. Debate whether they have a place these days, tell us about your memories as a Greek, inform us of the history of one of the houses, create a field guide to fraternities/sororities for someone heading to college. Surprise me!

November 27: Sinkie Day
So ... just how much turkey do you have left? Pie? Stuffing? While Thanksgiving tends to be a day for pigging out, it's also a day in which we often make far too much food. Which means left overs. And Sinkie Day is all about eating leftovers, typically over the sink, right? Help someone out with ideas for how to use those leftovers - maybe you have great ideas for using turkey or tips on freezing food or want to wrangle for an invite to come over and help me finish mine! Leftovers galore to close out the month!
