August 2009
How it works:
- Have a lens for a day's topic? Add it to the list.
- Like the topic but don't have a lens? Make one (a great one!) and add it.
- Check out the lenses for the day's topic and vote for the ones you like (or don't).
- Visit the Carnival of Squid every week to see which lenses made the cut.
Week 1
August 3: Opera
Back in 1778, the opera house La Scala opened in Milan, Italy, with a performance of Antonio Salieri's Europa riconosciuta. So are you into opera? What your favorite? Do you have a favorite singer, opera house, composer? Think opera should be banned from the planet? Let's hear about it!

August 4: National Mustard Day
It's my favorite condiment in just about any form (and on just about anything!). Did you know you could use it to cure heartburn? Yep! It's the greatest! So how about telling me more about mustard - homemade recipes, folk uses, growing a mustard plant, history, varieties, you name it. It's all about the fabulous yellow stuff today!

August 5: American Bandstand
After several years in a local market, "American Bandstand," hosted by Dick Clark, made its network TV debut on ABC in 1957. It's now an icon of American pop culture after years of giving teenagers a chance to learn the latest dance moves and discover new music they might not have heard on their local radio station. So let's host our own version with lenses of artists who performed on American Bandstand over the years.

August 7: Purple Heart
On this day in 1782, George Washington created the Order of the Purple Heart, a decoration to recognize merit in enlisted men and noncommissioned officers. It's still one of the most recognized and honored awards given in the military. Do you have one? Know someone who does? Let's give them their due today by telling us their story.

Week 2
August 10: Public Transportation
Way back in 1885, America's first commercially operated electric streetcar began operation in Baltimore. Wow. That's a lot time that we've been taking public transportation to get places. So what have you got on public transportation? A great explanation of the London Tube system? A debate on whether some cities should even have it? A history of the San Francisco streetcars? Let's see!

Aloha!! While it didn't become a state until much later, Hawaii was formally annexed to the United States on this date in 1898. It's a popular tourist destination for those from the west and the east. Give me a travelogue of the trip you took there. Tell me about the history of the islands. August 13: Left Hander's Day
My hubby's a lefty. My business partner's a lefty. My niece is a lefty. Going out to dinner is a nightmare working out where to put people to minimize the bumping elbows.
It's just one of the trials of being left-handed, so relax and celebrate Left Hander's day, an annual event when left-handers everywhere can celebrate their sinistrality and increase public awareness of the advantages and disadvantages of being left-handed. In the U.K. alone, there are more than 20 regional events to mark the day - including left-v-right sports matches, a left-handed tea party, pubs using left-handed corkscrews where patrons drank and played pub games with the left hand only, and nationwide "Lefty Zones" where left-handers creativity, adaptability and sporting prowess were celebrated, whilst right-handers were encouraged to try out everyday left-handed objects to see just how awkward it can feel using the wrong equipment!
August 14: Boy Scouts of America
It's the birthday of Ernest Thompson Seton, British/Canadian naturalist and writer who helped found the Boy Scouts of America. Were you a Boy Scout? Tell us what it was like, share projects perfect for badge earning or maybe give us a photo essay on a Boy Scout trip.

August 20: Iconic Photography
Life Magazine, National Geographic, Vanity Fair. Magazines have brought us many amazing images over the years, including the iconic Iwo Jima flag-raising picture during World War II taken by former Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal, who died this date in 2006. What makes a photo iconic? Do you have a favorite that has achieved that status? Is "iconic" a standard to strive for in photography? What say you?

August 21: Big Band
Big band swing is one of my favorite musical styles. And one of the kings of big bands, Count Basie was born today in 1904. Let's see lenses giving a history of the big band era, talking about the top songs of the time, or biographies of the big band leaders.
Week 4
August 24: Volcanoes
In some cases, where there's smoke, there's ash and hot lava. Back in 79 AD, Mount Vesuvius erupted, burying the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum in volcanic ash. An estimated 20,000 people died in a natural disaster that fascinates us to this day. Better detection methods mean we don't see death on that scale these days, but volcanoes still erupt regularly around the world. Explain what happens in a volcanic eruption, tell me a story of an eruption or talk about dormant vs. active volcanoes today.

August 26: National Inventors Month
We're fascinated by inventors - DaVinci, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Edison. And August is a whole month in celebration of them. We're celebrating today specifically because it's the birthday of Lee De Forest, who invented the Audion vacuum tube. (Don't ask me explain what it is!) So let's talk about inventing, inventors and things we wish would be invented.

August 27: Just Because Day
It's a classic Squidoo kind of topic. Just Because. You almost can't make it past 10 lenses without doing at least one just because. Today's the day to celebrate those. It's a day to do things without a rhyme or reason. Perhaps, you have something in mind. If not, just go with the first thing that comes to your mind. "Just because" lenses often come from a "whim" or a "what if I" type of thought. They're often the best lenses out there!!
