July 2009
How it works:
- Have a lens for a day's topic? Add it to the list.
- Like the topic but don't have a lens? Make one (a great one!) and add it.
- Check out the lenses for the day's topic and vote for the ones you like (or don't).
- Visit the Carnival of Squid every week to see which lenses made the cut.
Week 1
June 29: iPhone
It's hard to believe but two years ago today, the iPhone went on sale for the first time. Wow!! It feels like they've been around forever.
Two years is plenty of time for some great lenses on the iPhone to have been made though. Tell me about your favorite apps, great hacks or other tips. Just don't give me a crap lens with nothing but accessories, OK? Put meat on those iPhone bones!

June 30: Meteor Day
Make a wish!! Shooting stars across the sky are great sparks for the imagination. We know now they aren't angels or omens, but meteors making their way through space. Know more? Tell me!! What are meteors made of? Why can we see them? What makes for a shower? Where's the biggest meteor crater on the planet?

July 1: Hong Kong
After 156 years as a British colongy, this Chinese city reverted to Chinese rule on this date in 1997. I remember what a big deal this was! Budgets being what they are, there are a lot of us who can't plan a trip to Hong Kong anytime soon, so give me some lenses that make me feel as though I'm there. Tell me about the best sights, food and experiences that make up Hong Kong.

In 2002, Steve Fossett became the first person to fly a balloon solo around the world. What an adventure!! Have you been on a hot air balloon flight? Maybe you can tell us about it. Or how about how a balloon works? Or a great science fair experiment using hot air balloons? Can you make a miniature one? Hmmm.

Lawdy, but it's hot!! Sure glad I can crank down the AC. But wasn't always that way and not everyone has AC. (As I discovered when I moved to NY for a few months.) July 6: Mars
Our neighbor the red planet just fascinates us. We talk about colonizing it, we plan (untaken) trips to it, we look for life on it. Back on this date in 1997, the rover Sojourner rolled down a ramp from the Mars Pathfinder lander onto the Martian landscape to begin inspecting soil and rocks in yet another attempt to find life there. So let's talk Mars today. Maybe your favorite books are set there? (Like the series by Kim Stanley Robinson.) Give me some great lenses that help explain our fascination!

Do you scream for ice cream? It's a month-long celebration of our favorite frozen treat. Vanilla, strawberry, chocolate, birthday cake, banana pudding, apple pie - the flavor choices are endless these days. So what's your favorite? Lament a long-gone Ben & Jerry flavor, argue about whether gelato should count as ice cream or tell me your tricks for making my own. How about an ode to the best ice cream parlor ever? Crazy flavors, toppings and containers are fair game too!

July 9: Tom Hanks
Happy birthday to one of America's favorite actors! Tom Hanks turns 52(!) today. I'm old enough to remember him in Bosom Buddies; fine work, that. :-) Wonder what might have happened if he had stayed in television.
So, do you prefer him in comedies or dramas? What's your favorite? Should we hold The Burbs and Joe vs. the Volcano against him?
July 10: Looney Tunes
This was a sad day back in 1989. Mel Blanc, who supplied the voices for cartoon characters including Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and Porky Pig, died at age 81. He left a great legacy of laughter though, one that will live for generations more.
So, what's your favorite Looney Tune episode? Mine are What's Opera Doc? and Duck Season, Rabbit Season -- the real classics. So how about a video showcase of the best Looney Tunes? A debate on whether Daffy Duck never got his true due?

(As a singer, I wish America had a different one just because it's so darned difficult to sing well. And it's all about a fight, not the country. Sigh.)
