June 2009
How it works:
- Have a lens for a day's topic? Add it to the list.
- Like the topic but don't have a lens? Make one (a great one!) and add it.
- Check out the lenses for the day's topic and vote for the ones you like (or don't).
- Visit the Carnival of Squid every week to see which lenses made the cut.
Week 1
June 1: Hug Your Cat Day
I'm not a cat person, but I know some of you are. So it's time to hug your cat!! Share a virtual hug by telling us all about what makes your cat worth hugging. Has to be about your cat, not cats in general.

June 2: First Ladies
It's Martha Washington's birthday today. In honor of the first American first lady, we're celebrating the women behind the man. Tell me about your favorite first lady (of any country), review a biography, dazzle us with the inaugural gowns. There are 44 choices in the U.S. alone so lots of room for some great lenses here.

June 3: Great Love Stories
Way back in 1937, the Duke of Windsor married American divorcee Wallis Warfield Simpson, for whom he had abdicated the British throne. Highly romantic - a king giving up his crown for love.
Share your favorite love story. Is it your own? Is it a historical story like the Duke and Willis? Is it fictional like Romeo and Juliet? Tell us all about it and why you love it.

June 4: Stamps, Postage and Mail
It's 1992, the votes are in and the majority of Americans picked the "young Elvis" for the postage stamp in honor of the king. So let's look at stamps, stamp collecting (philately for you serious folks), postage - you name it. Share your collection with us, help someone get started with collecting or tell me about the prettiest stamps in your country.

June 5: Economics
It's a double birthday today. Economics got a double bonus on June 5 when Adam Smith was born in 1723 and John Maynard Keynes was born in 1883. Think you can give us a great explanation of Smith's supply and demand concept or help someone understand why Keynes is so in favor with politicians? Or maybe you'd rather promote the theories of Milton Friedman? All economics topics are fair game today!

Week 2
June 8: Best Friends Day
OMG!! BFF!! Got a best friend? Want to tell the world about him or her? Now's your chance. Tell us why they're your best friend - how you met, your favorite things to do together. Share best friend poems, songs - whatever fits this special day.

June 9: Johnny Depp
Those of us old enough to remember 21 Jump Street might never have tabbed Johnny Depp as the greatest actor of his generation. But movie after movie, he shows his incredible skill at creating characters from psychopaths to criminals to sensitive souls.
It's his birthday today!! Impress me with your best Depp - anything from the man to his characters to his movies.

June 10: Iced Tea Day
Being a southern girl, there is nothing better than a mason jar of sweet iced tea while sitting out on the porch swing. My grandmother made it great, so some lovely memories there. How do you like your iced tea? Got some great tips on making it or a special recipe? Want to argue that tea is better hot? How about a debate over sweet vs. unsweetened?

June 11: Horse Racing
Way back in 1919, Sir Barton won the Belmont Stakes, becoming horse racing's first Triple Crown winner. On the same day in 1977, Seattle Slew also captured the Triple Crown and slightly earlier in the week in 1973, Secretariat became horse racing's first Triple Crown winner in 25 years. Tell me about the different types of races, records, special horses, tracks, traditions and more. (No lenses on betting as gambling is against the Squidoo TOS anyway.)

June 12: Perfect Games
Way back in 1880, Lee Richmond of the Worcester Ruby Legs pitched the first perfect game in major league history in a 1-0 victory over the Cleveland Blues. Granted baseball hadn't been around that long, so it was easy to set records. And on June 12, 1939, the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum was dedicated in Cooperstown to honor those who set the records and make baseball a great game.
To date, there have only been 17 perfect games recorded. Tell me about them, the pitchers who pitched them, what a perfect game is - anything related works!

Week 3
June 15: Smile Power Day
Smile and watch the world smile with you. We're looking for great grins today. It could be jokes that make us laugh, comedies we love to watch or just great photos of beautiful smiles. Start a debate about who has the best smile - Julia Roberts or Cameron Diaz. Tell me how to make my smile better. Give me tips on giving the best smile for the camera.

June 16: Comedy Teams
So who's the best comedy duo ever? We're celebrating the birthday of one of half a contender - Stan Laurel was born today in 1890. Do you think it's Laurel and Hardy? What about the Smothers Brothers? Flight of the Conchords? Martin and Lewis? Cusack and Piven? Is the time of the true comedy team past?

June 17: Eat Your Vegetables Day
It's a vegetable garden of ideas today. Got a special way to fix a certain vegetable? Have the best recipe for vegetable soup ever? Want to tell me how to can my veggies so I can enjoy them later? Lay 'em on me today!

June 18: Women in Space
Sally Ride became the first American woman in space in 1983, 20 years and two days after Russian Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman to blast off. Women astronauts are routine these days - from Susan Helms to Shannon Lucid to Mae Jamison. And don't forget Lt. Uhuru and other fictional women space travellers as well!

June 19: Saints
In 1977, Pope Paul VI proclaimed a 19th-century Philadelphia bishop, John Neumann, the first male U.S. saint. Tell me about your patron saint today - whether from the day you were born or due to some circumstances. From St. Nicholas to St. Jude to St. Christopher - there are a lot of options here. Or share with us the process for becoming a saint. Or maybe why you don't believe in saints in the first place. Go!!

Week 4
June 22: Girls Just Want to Have Fun
It's the birthday of the fun girl herself - Cyndi Lauper. Let's celebrate with lenses about all the ways girls like to have fun!! Pajama parties, shopping, chick flicks, you name it. Give me tips on planning a girls weekend away, a tea party with friends - get creative. It's all about the girl in you today.
This is a rather broad category so it's going to have to be a great lens to win this guy!!

June 23: Pink Flamingo Day
This day started as a tribute to the creator of the pink flamingo lawn ornament on its 50th anniversary. Let's join in the party today with lenses about pink flamingos - the real or plastic variety. Start a debate about whether they're truly a tacky item or show pizazz when done right. How about a MonkeyBrain on what's a better (or worse) lawn decoration - flamingos or gnomes?

June 24: UFO Day
Wheee, heee, heeee. (My version of spooky music there. Work with me!) It's UFO day, possibly tied to today because it's the day that the Air Force released a report on the so-called "Roswell Incident," suggesting the alien bodies witnesses reported seeing in 1947 were actually life-sized dummies. You don't believe that, do you? So give me your best UFO stories - real or fictional - in celebration of little green men from outer space.

June 25: Under the Sea
The great oceanographer Jacques-Yves Cousteau died today in 1997 at age 87. He opened an alien world to us under the oceans through the invention of scuba, his research and photography. So we're going to the watery depths today for lenses. Teach me about scuba, tell me where the best reefs are, show me your favorite fish, give me tips on underwater photography. (Or even all about Cousteau himself!)

June 26: Roller Coasters
In 1927, the Cyclone roller coaster opened on Coney Island. It wasn't the first, but it's now part of the historic landmark site at Coney Island and enough of an excuse to make it the topic for today. Have you done a lens on your favorite roller coaster? Tried to explain the physics behind why they stay on the track? Give me pictures of your favorites, the history of the roller coaster, arguments why roller coasters are the best.
