September 2009
How it works:
- Have a lens for a day's topic? Add it to the list.
- Like the topic but don't have a lens? Make one (a great one!) and add it.
- Check out the lenses for the day's topic and vote for the ones you like (or don't).
- Visit the Carnival of Squid every week to see which lenses made the cut.
Week 1
August 31: National Trail Mix Day
Nom, nom, nom! It's National Trail Mix Day. What's your favorite recipe for a mix? What makes something a trail mix? Where's your favorite place to eat your trail mix? Does it have to be eaten on an actual trail to be trail mix?

September 1: 70s Music
Happy birthday to Barry Gibb of The Bee Gees and Greg Errico from Sly and the Family Stone! So let's take a musical trip back to the groovy 70s. Whether you were into disco sounds or groovy funk, there was something for everyone then. Share your favorites from the period or debate why it was a wasteland for music. Show us how to do the dances or tell us about your favorite musicians.

September 2: Fire!
The Great Fire of London broke out on this date back in 1666. When it was finally extinguished three days later, nearly 400 acres in the city had been destroyed, including some 13,000 houses and the old St. Paul's Cathedral.
So let's look at fire - what causes it, how to stop it, how to work with it. Tell me about fire eaters, firemen, fire extinguishers, you name it.

September 4: Olympic Memories
Back in 1972, swimmer Mark Spitz became the first person to win seven gold medals at a single Olympic Games when the United States won the 400-meter relay in Munich. It was one of the great Olympic moments witnessed over the past couple hundred years of the modern Olympics. What's your favorite? Summer or winter Olympics, share your favorite Olympic memory!

September 7: The Tudors
It's the birthday of Queen Elizabeth - the first one back in the glory days of the Tudor reign. Her life wasn't always an easy one and the Tudors provided enough grist for the scandal mills to last several lifetimes. And now they're reliving those days in The Tudors on Showtime.
Are you an expert in the history of the time? Know something about the War of the Roses? Have thoughts about the other Bolyen sister? Share your take on the soap opera of the Tudor family.

September 8: Star Trek
It's doubtful anyone dreamed it was possible, but back in 1966, a phenomenon was born. The TV series Star Trek hit the airwaves for a short run, but it was enough to launch an entire culture around the Prime Directive and life on other worlds and beaming up.
Which is your favorite movie? Series? Captain? So many to choose from these days and so many more to come probably. Tell us about the book series, the fan conferences, the costume you made. (We know you have one.) Live long and prosper!!

We all have at least one in our life. Someone whom we love madly, but face, they're weird. They defy the concept of normal in just about any way possible. And hooray for them.

September 10: TV Westerns
We were introduced to the world of Gunsmoke this day back in 1955 when the show premiered on CBS. It ran for 20 years, longer than any other network prime-time series. (Wow!) But it wasn't the only Western to grace the small screen during that time. I can still sing most of the theme to Rawhide myself. What was your favorite Western on the small screen? Huge, huge day in pop culture. The year was 1962 and The Beatles recorded their first single, "Love Me Do" and "P.S. I Love You," at EMI studios in London. And the world of music was never the same.
What's your favorite Beatles song? Have some tips for singing it in karaoke? Who's your favorite Beatle? Do you prefer the early stuff or the older? One of my favorite groups, so interested in hearing what you have to share about them.

September 14: Library Card Sign-up Month
Some of my favorite childhood memories revolve around trips to the library. Signing up for a card is one of the first things I do when I move to a new community because I can't live without my books. (And can't afford my book habit!)
It's library card sign-up month, so a good excuse for you to get a card if you don't have one already. And we're going to celebrate the library today. Tell me about the Dewey decimal system, why you love libraries, how to get the most out of the library or just about your local library or favorite librarian.
