Carol Wior - Inventor of the Slimsuit

The Patented Slimming Swimsuit !

Carol Wior invented the Slimsuit, a women's swimsuit that was guaranteed to take an inch or more off the waist or tummy and look natural.

A Slimsuit has a built-in lining that shapes the body in specific areas, hiding bulges and giving a smooth, firm appearance. Slimsuits were sold with a tape measure as a marketing device to emphasis the slimming features of the new swimsuit.

Carol Wior was already a successful designer when she invented a new type of women's swimsuit. While on vacation in Hawaii, Wior noticed herself pulling and tugging on her swimsuit, while trying to get it to cover her properly. Wior also noticed that when she wore her regular swimsuit she would always try to hold her stomach flat. Carol Wior realized that women were uncomfortable and body conscious in their swimsuits and began to think of ways to make a better women's swimsuit. Two years and a hundred swimsuits later, Carol Wior achieved the design she wanted - the Slimsuit. --From Mary Bellis about.com.

Spandex: The Miracle Fiber

Carol Wior's Slimsuits have 22% Spandex

Spandex?or elastane?is a synthetic fiber known for its exceptional elasticity. It is stronger and more durable than rubber, its major non-synthetic competitor. It was invented in 1959 by DuPont chemist Joseph Shivers. When first introduced, it revolutionized many areas of the clothing industry.

"Spandex" is a generic name and not derived from the chemical name of the fiber, as are most manufactured fibers, but an anagram of the word expands.Kadolph, Sara J. Textiles. "Spandex" is the preferred name in North America; elsewhere it is referred to as "elastane".

The most famous brand name associated with spandex is Lycra, a trademark of Invista (formerly part of DuPont). Such is the prominence of the Lycra brand that it has become a genericised trademark in many parts of the world, used to describe any kind of spandex. Invista discourages such use, protecting its trademark vigorously.

Other spandex trademarks include Elaspan (also Invista's), ROICA & Dorlastan (Asahi Kasei) and Linel (Fillattice).
