Carpe Demon - Adventures of a Demon-Hunting Soccer Mom

Fighting evil in suburbia

Kate Connor is the demon slayer. Well, make that _a_ demon slayer. See, the church recruits children - typically orphans - and raises them up to be slayers. There's no special powers, no uniqueness, no mystical calling. Just the building of an army to fight the evil. And Kate and Eric were part of that army. But then they got married, had a kid and decided to retire. To the suburbs. And Eric was killed in what seemed like a random accident.

Years later, Kate is remarried to Stuart with a teenager and a toddler in tow when activity starts getting crazy on the Hellmouth. Or in San Diablo, that is. Which turns out to be a pretty attractive spot for demons and their henchmen. Or hench zombies in the case of the first book. Kate finds herself back in the thick of things whether she likes it or not. She dusts off her skills, a few books and relics and proceeds to fight to protect her family, her home, Stuart's budding political career and her town.

Retired demon hunter Kate Connor must go back to work when she spots a demon lurking in the local Wal-Mart. But she'd better not arouse suspicion. This kind of thing could really hurt her husband's political career.

My Review of Carpe Demon

We aren't looking at high literature here. But definitely a fun, fun, fun romp.
The blurb on the cover said something to the effect of "What if Buffy the Vampire Slayer grew up, moved to the suburbs and became a soccer mom." And, well, that's kind of the basic premise here. There are a few huge differences, but that one sentence tells you exactly what you need to know - vampire (zombie, demon, general bad guy) action, good vs. evil, balancing real life and secrecy with surreal slayer life. It's all there. And while it's missing that Joss Whedon touch, this is still a fun series of books.

Kate's a typical suburban mom, balancing too much, fighting the push for perfection, balancing a new job with home life. The new job being her reinstatement as slayer, demon hunter, zombie killer. Any mom will definitely relate to her crazy balancing act, guilt over daycare for Timmy, pressure to keep up with the perfect moms. Then there's the action, which appeals to those of us who love movies where things blow up and butts get kicked. Then, there's the absolutely insane love story angle where Kate's married to the absolutely wonderful Stuart, but there's this gorgeous teacher at Allie's school that pushes her buttons. (But I'll leave you to figure that one out for yourself as you read.)

A great bunch of characters, enough action to keep the story rolling at a good pace and a story you can find plausible even as it gets ridiculous.

In between demon patrols and teaching self-defense classes to the local moms, Kate has to deal with a teenage daughter who's gung-ho on being a demon slayer in training and a toddler son entering a tantrum phase that rivals anything from the pits of Hell.

That's a lot for one woman to juggle, but on top of it all, Kate has to find a way to release the demon possessing her first husband, Eric, without destroying the man inside. Because if the demon within Eric gets free, it just might be more than one seriously stressed suburban mom can handle.

Who should play Kate in the movie?

Word recently came down that they're making a movie of Carpe Demon - or at least one based on the premise. Some of the articles definitely said "rework" the idea, so either they're combining a few books or the movie will be called Carpe Demon, include a slayer named Kate and similarities might end there. Either way, it could be good, really good.

Which got me thinking about who should play Kate. They use the idea that it's Buffy all grown up in helping to explain the story concept. And actually, Sarah Michelle Gellar is maybe the right age to play Kate - unless that's one of the things they rework. We'd all buy her as Kate in every way and she definitely has the kicking butt part of the role down. I see Kate as being close to 40, Sarah's 33. Might be a stretch, maybe not. i think the hardest part would be that we might not buy she could be the mother of a teenager. Again, something they could rework. But other than Gellar, who else might be a good option for the role of Kate?

I picked actresses in the 35-40 range whom I would buy in the role.

Duh Hello, Kristy Swanson is 42 and she was the original "Buffy" in the 1980's movie. She is the right candidate. Kate Conner is in her 40's it would help if people actually read the book.

I really like these books and am rather impatiently waiting for the next one to come out. I really hope they will stick close to the book when they make the movie.

This is the first I've heard of these novels! The author has a great premise; sounds very successful! Susan, seems like I haven't seen you in a long time.... I'm blessing your lens; hope that will give it a good jump in lensrank!
