Carpet Fleas, How To Kill 'em Without Chemicals

Ranked #32,528 in Education, #574,074 overall

When Fido Brings Home Friends

It starts out in the back yard where the flea hangs out on the tip of a blade of grass waiting for his meal ticket to come strolling by. When that happens, the flea jumps aboard Fido, maybe gives him a bite and sucks a little blood, and then settles in for the ride to your house. Once inside the flea can jump off the dog, find another flea playmate and start propagating on your carpet. This little love story is repeated hundreds of times and soon these critters own your carpet and have laid thousands of eggs.

So how can you get rid of them without gassing the house or laying down a bunch of chemicals that not only the fleas have to deal with but your kids and your dog as well. A natural approach is not rocket science and it's a whole lot safer.

Say Hello To Mr Hoover

Bring In The Big Sucker!

The first step in getting rid of carpet fleas is to give all the floors and furniture that your dog has access to a good vacuuming. A study done by Kansas University says that better than fifty percent of the adult fleas can be sucked up in the first pass. Of course now these little buggers are in the vacuum bag and ideally you want to dispose of it as soon as you're done with the floors. If you'd like to get a few more uses out of it, chop up a flea collar and toss three or four pieces into the bag. This will kill of the captured fleas and allow you to store the vacuum indoors without worrying about them escaping.

Continuous daily attacks should grab most of the adult population. You also want to wash any items on the floor that Fido uses to rest on like a favorite blanket or towel.

Now for that huge colony of larvae that the adults have left behind. If you can't kill these then the whole cycle begins again.

Flea larvae need a warm moist environment to mature in. Take away the warm and you'll slow down the process but take away the moist and you'll kill them. Now there are any number of commercial chemical spays and powders to choose from, fleas are big business. However if you would prefer that your family and pets not be exposed to toxic fumes, you can use a tried and true natural treatment.

20 Mule Train Wagon To The Rescue

If you remember 20 Mule Train then you're an old fart like me. Ronald Regan used to host a television Western sponsored by Boraxo the detergent made from borax that was hauled from the mines in Nevada to the mills in...well I don't remember where but it got there by the 20mule team wagons..

So what does this have to do with killing carpet flea eggs? Well boric acid, which is found in a safe form as an ingredient in Boraxo or any other detergent based on borax, will do the job quite nicely. Combine this stuff with regular table salt with 4 parts borax and 1 part salt and mix well. Sprinkle it liberally on your carpet in the evening and use a steel garden rake to really work it in. Let it set overnight.

In the morning bring out Mr Hoover and give the carpet a thorough vacuuming. The Borax will turn the carpet into a dry desert and the salt will slit the larvae and kill them.

Pretty simple and safe huh? No chemicals just a little elbow grease involved in killing those pesky carpet fleas.
