Carrie Bradshaw Style

In Season 1 of Sex and the City, we are introduced to Carrie Bradshaw, sexual anthropologist. Carrie is an established writer with a busy social life who is beginning to question the future of finding, "the one." In season one, Carrie dates an array of men, but happens upon Mr. Big. From day 1, she is drawn to him and gets hit hard by the love bug.

Because the series begins here, the ideas are new to the audience, and Carrie's love is fresh. Therefore, we see her in a couple of pale, playful, yet sexy ensemble's like this one.

Also, her wardrobe aside from this iconic outfit tends to have less continuity in season 1. I really think the costume designers were still trying to get a feel at this point of who Carrie was going to be. Because of that, there isn't much consistency in Carrie's style in season 1 and her looks are definitely not as dramatic as this ensemble in the opening credits and, "the naked dress," in episode 6, "Secret Sex."

An argument about the lack of consistency in wardrobe could be that perhaps this is the first step in Carrie's romantic maturation and because of that, she herself is feeling out who she is, which corresponds to her clothing choices.

In Season 2, we see Carrie debut the statement dress. For the first time, Carrie is moving out of cute, yet simple clothing decisions and is beginning to make more glamorous wardrobe choices like in, "The Chicken Dance." Other major pieces she wears are the glitzy dress she wears in the, "Cheating Curve," at the Jazz club with Big, the opening dress in, "The Man, The Myth, The Viagra," the color popping outfits in, "La Douleur Exquise," and, "Games People Play."

The use of more formal dresses parallels her romantic life with Big. She is broken hearted as the season begins and with the chance to get him back, Carrie really steps up her game. Peacocks spread their colorful feathers to attract a mate and Carrie is doing the exact same thing with Mr. Big. This becomes clearer by the end of season 2.

By season 2's end, Carrie is descending into heartbreak and is lashing out by employing color, bold accessories and teeny weeny shorts and tops. This use of color is about to be taken one step further, with more life changes to come in season 3.

The nude dress she wears in, "Ex and the City," gives us clues into what is to come. By wearing skin tones and pastels that represent the past, one might be led to believe that she will not be able to let go of her great love. Her dress choice in the last scene proves that while Carrie says she is moving on, that school girl crush she had might carry over and cause major trouble.

Season 3 starts off in dramatic fashion. Sex and the City is literally on fire when the girls are judging a hot fireman contest. The season opens with vibrant colors, huge accessories and asymmetrical lines to accompany the bold story line.

Carrie is back on the dating scene and has arrived as the Princess of Fashion. Carrie steps up her accessories with the big brooch flowers. Pastels are thrown out the window and the newly independent, yet cautious bachelorette is single and ready to mingle. We see her wear colors on opposite sides of the color wheel and most importantly we see non traditional lines.

These asymmetrical cut pieces that Carrie wears throughout the season may be a sub conscious expression of her inner turmoil. Carry has lost a great love and can't find anyone to replace him. When Carrie finally begins to picture a life with Aidan, Big comes back into the picture. Many worlds are shattered when Carrie cheats on Aidan with Big. The crooked lines in her outfits directly reflect this chaos and imbalance. A perfect example is the newspaper dress in, "What Goes Around Comes Around," and the one shoulder dress pictured in, "Boy Girl, Boy Girl."

In Season 4, Carrie and the girls are back with more outrageous love stories to experience. And by season 4, Carrie has been through battle what with her 2 painful breakups with Big and her latest betrayal towards Aidan being put behind her.

The drama has caused Carrie to mature. By now, she has a sleeker look that was cemented in season 3. She is wearing bold, glittery statement pieces and emphasizes her shoes more than ever this season.

She is once again drawn back to Aidan and then faced with wounding him again. To her heart's dismay, she does exactly that.

She becomes majorly crafty with accessories like with the ring from Aidan she wants to hide in her layers of pearls. She is a woman who has come into her own and can stand on her own two feet. This is why by seasons end, her shoe choices like below are heavily emphasized.

Towards the end of season 4's run, we see her in more suits and more modest jackets. She is no longer a school girl in love, but a woman who has survived a war with her heart barely in tact.

In movie land, Carrie is wearing a gorgeous vintage dress found in a magical thrift shop, but in reality this is an extremely pricey suit made by Christian Dior. The tag was taken off for filming. By season 5, Carrie has learned, loved and lost. She is now embarking on a new career as a book author. She has been given a fresh start and has grown as a person. There is also a new love interest indroduced to her-Berger.

Therefore, she brings back her pale pinks like in the first and last episode of the season, as she does at the start of the series(to represent new beginnings).

Carrie admits in, "Cover Girl," that she is getting on in years and transitions to a billowy more conservative look.

A perfect example of her more adult look, with that same Carrie flare, is in, "Anchors Away," pictured.

Extra Extra: Carrie's more covered up look is also due to the pregnancy of the actress who plays her, Sarah Jessica Parker.

In season 6, we see Carrie lose her male counterpart in Berger and see her delve into a sweeping romance with Alexander Petrovsky. Because this is the last season and is focused on Carrie finding, "the one," and not wanting to waste anymore time, we see her wear classic gowns, glittery numbers and colorful outfits. All the while, she maintains that wild spirit in her clothes, like the Carrie, "ghetto gold," necklace that she wears and the eye popping Paris outfits she dreams up.

She tries on old Hollywood class when she decides to settle down with an older man, but in the end, she reverts back to pale greens and her skin tone fur coat when Mr. Big comes back in her life.

All in all, this season touches on every style she has introduced to us, chronicling her journey. She comes full circle and comes out bolder at the end.

It's several years later and Carrie has it all. She is with the love of her life, has a successful book career and is about to purchase the home of her dreams.

So with all that said, her life is filled with joy and color, which is completly reflected in the loudnes of her clothing. Her life is getting better every minute as her whirlwind wedding to Big approaches. She gets carried away with the pomp and circumstance, that we see an array of outfits that border on extreme(the deep green outfit pictured, her wedding dress with the feather and her rainbow maxi dress from her honey moon).

It isn't till after Carrie is jilted and back from her non honeymoon, that Carrie delves into darker tones(the outfit from fashion week and the outfit when she discovers the magazine article). She does this to hide from the world, but with style.

Of course, Carrie mellows out at the end, finding a happy medium, wearing her clasic cream suit at her courthouse wedding.

However, the outfits of note are right before the "Big" marriage bust, like this green number pictured.

This is classicly over the top, yet stunningly gorgeous on Carrie.

In the sequal to the Sex and the City feature film, Carrie is back in her fabulous New York life style with her rich, powerful and stylish friends. She has everything, including a gorgeous husband,and even takes on spoiled child syndrome for a good part of the film. Because of this, her clothes are decadent, exotic, strikingly original and vibrant-just like Carrie.

Apart of Carrie does hold on to her past, evidenced by the repeat of the newspaper dress from Season 3 and her kiss with Aidan.

Of course, Carrie's one true love is Mr. Big and in the end he accesorizes her wardrobe perfectly, with the black diamond wedding ring he gives her.

What a fitting end to the fabulous life style and journey through clothing with Carrie Bradshaw.
