Life as a modern Prom Queen

I'm a professional freelance writer and reviewer, living with my partner, Chris and working in London, UK.

This is all about who I am and the life experiences that have molded me into the unconventional person that I am!

I was born in Falfield, Glos...

I was born in Falfield, Wotton-under-Edge, Gloucestershire on March 18th, 1970. Falfield has its own website which is here.

I have a sister, two years older and a brother, five years older than me.

We also had a white cat, Tish and a black labrador, Loofer.

I lived here on a Prison Officers Estate (Eastwood Park HMP) for 8 years at which point my life changed dramatically.

When I was 5

Berkeley, South Gloucestershire

My mother (with us) moved away in 1978, leaving my father back in Falfield. We moved in with my step-father who had lived on the same Estate as we did.

Schools attended: Berkeley Vale Primary School. Berkeley is famous for its castle and the Edward Jenner Museum.

At the time, of course, I had no idea just how much pain it was going to cause me or the rest of the family.

When we left my father back in Falfield and moved to Berkeley less than a mile up the road, I had no idea what was going on. I didn't know the reasons why we had left him and I had no idea who this strange guy was that mother had fallen for.

As an adult, I have suffered with long term grief due to the death of my father when I was 16 in 1986. This grief has now been with me for the past 20+ years. Only now, do I feel, I am able to seek some sort of help for this burden.

My other problem is Depression. Not just one type, however. I suffer from two types.

My Depression has been compounded with a belief that I am a Highly Sensitive Person and my ongoing difficulties with my family is due to a lack of understanding about this very special personality trait.

I can now look back to when I was a child of 8 and say without a doubt that this was when my troubles first started.

Just a little bit more about Me

Did you know..?

I changed my surname by deed poll when I was 16 to White. It was witnessed by my Aunt on my mother's side.

Woodchester, Nr Stroud, Glos.

I've lived in Falfield(SG), Berkeley(SG), Woodchester(G), Ebford(D), Tetbury(G), Syde(G), Malmesbury(W), Corston(W) and finally, London!

Schools I attended: Selsley Primary, Archway Comprehensive and Stroud Technical College.

My father died when I was 16 in 1986 from Hodgkin's Disease which he had contracted whilst working in the submarine docks in Chatham, Kent.

The image is his headstone. He's buried in Falfield.

My regret is that I am unable to visit his grave as much as I'd like to.

My work...

As a child, I found it very difficult to verbalise my emotions, thoughts or opinions through fear of ridicule; I still do. So, a journal became my friend; a place I could finally be myself and learn to express myself without that crippling fear of rejection.

I wrote in that journal on a daily basis and it became a very important part of me. Not one single member of my family ever knew that journal existed and I was glad of that.

Even now, I still use a journal to convey particularly strong emotions which I'm afraid of verbalising. I don't feel I can express myself well enough to be understood a lot of the time, so I use my writing as a source of therapy, release and communication.

When I 'met' my partner, Chris in Freeserve chat, I allowed him to read some of my journal entries as a way of helping him to understand me better. His exact words were, 'You write very eloquently; why don't you consider writing professionally?' And, that's exactly what I did.

My first step within the world of writing was to enter an erotic short story competition held by Cosmopolitan magazine. Although I didn't win, it started me on the rather enjoyable road as an erotic writer :)

How I work as a writer

  1. I don't use feedback or critiques via forums or workshops. If something of mine doesn't sell, I re-work it until it does.
  2. I don't write to a schedule.
  3. Although I am a reviewer, I find it difficult to give feedback to other writer's work in forums, workshops or writing communities.
  4. I'm a lurker on forums rather than a poster.
  5. I'll join lots of writing network sites in an effort to network and socialise but find it very hard to keep active. I will then remove my account after so many weeks or months of inactivity on my part.

...and my play.

Cribbage - A card game that I used to play at school although I was left out most of the time. I still enjoy the game though!
Walking - Walking around London as helped my confidence and enabled me to learn a lot about the city I now call my home. It's also a very good form of exercise for me with no bouncing around :)
Fish Keeping - I currently have only one Goldfish left. I have kept them for over 10 years with varying success.
Video Games - I'm one of the few females who enjoy playing video games. I have, now, the means to play 10+ consoles. My newest addition to my collection is the PSP. I tend to play RPG's, Investigations, Shoot 'Em Ups and Simulations.
Photography - Not a 'natural' interest by any means but I do enjoy it :) It takes a lot to encourage me to take a camera with me and often I won't make that many images but I do find it therapeutic.
True crime/Forensics - One of my favourite interests, I'm intrigued by the psychology of serial killers mainly.
Paranormal/Bizarre/Unexplained - This interest is usually geared around ghosts, possession, psychics (especially if combined with murder inquiries), sightings of big cats etc. I'm NOT interested in UFO's, Crop circles or aliens, though.
Why things go wrong - I enjoy documentaries about animal attacks on humans, disease, police, health, Aircrash Investigations, Car Crash Investigations, Medical Examiners and Wildlife. I'm NOT interested in assassinations or gang murders.
Death - I'm just fascinated about how and why people die; usually connects with murder. This can include executions and methods of torture.

Quote from Frasier

Roz: You went to bed with the prom queen?
Frasier: Yes, and I woke up with Carrie.
