The Carrot Seed: A Personal Review
Great for Pre-readers!
The Carrot Seed has been called "amost Zen-like in its simplicity" by some and "the Grandaddy of picture books" by others. In this story, a little boy nurtures a carrot seed that his family warns him will not come up. After a long time of pulling weeds, watering, and patience the carrot finally grows, and it is huge. This book is a favorite in my home. Its repetitive nature is great for my 3-year-old who "reads" this book to me on a daily basis. The story is charming and simple and promotes confidence and perserverence in our tiniest youth. Don't just read it -- own it -- love it -- cherish it!
My Inspiration

My inspiration for this lens came when my son discovered The Carrot Seed and asked to plant some seeds in our garden.
Sharing the love of reading with children is my life's passion. This book is a great way to share the love of reading with the budding outdoorsman (or woman) in your life!
Think About It
The carrot is one vegetable where the root is the edible part of the plant.
The Carrot Seed: Discussions
After reading The Carrot Seed, ask these questions.Who told the little boy the seed would not come up?
What two things did the little boy do everyday to take care of the seed?
Did a carrot finally come up? How?
What do you think the boy is going to do with his carrot?
Have you ever grown something by yourself? Tell me about it.

Carrot Varieties
What makes a carrot orange?
Have you ever seen a purple carrot? How about white, yellow, red or black? All carrots get their colour from carotenoids. Orange carrots contain beta carotene, a pigment the body converts to vitamin A which is essential.
Carrot Political History
In the 17th century, Dutch growers cultivated orange carrots to honor William of Orange - who lead the the struggle for Dutch independence - and the color stuck. While these new carrots were sweeter and more practical, a thousand years of yellow, white and purple carrot history, was wiped out within one generation.
