The Carry On Films

Ranked #809 in Entertainment, #8,605 overall

The Carry On Films Represent Britain's Most Successful Film/Movie Series of All Time

The Carry On Film series ran for twenty, laugh filled years, from 1958 to 1978 (inclusive) with what has so far proven to be but a one-off comeback production in 1992. The films featured many of Britain's top comedy stars of the era, including Sid James (pictured left), Kenneth Williams, Barbara Windsor, Joan Sims and many, many more. The film themes touched upon everything from Anthony and Cleopatra and the Court of Henry VIII, to campsite capers and high jinks in what were at the time modern day hospitals. Some of them were hilarious, some - at the very best - only mildly amusing, but each one played its part in forming a collection that will surely be viewed, remembered and revered by generations yet to come along.

Carry On Cleo (1964)

Anthony and Cleopatra as you are unlikely to have seen them before...

Amanda BarrieCarry On Cleo is definitely one of the classics of the series and is probably the film with the strongest plot. It begins with the Roman invasion of Britain, led by Julius Caesar (Kenneth Williams) and his trusted friend, Marc Anthony (Sid James). Among the slaves captured and taken back to Rome are struggling inventor Hengist Pod (Kenneth Connor) and his new neighbour, Horsa (Jim Dale).

Following an attempt on Caesar's life, Pod is mistakenly credited with foiling the assasins and made Caesar's bodyguard for among other things, the journey to Egypt and the domain of the beautiful but cunning Cleopatra (Amanda Barrie, right)...

Carry On Screaming (1966)

If you go down to the woods tonight, you're in for a big surprise!

Fenella FieldingIn Carry On Screaming, the Carry On team venture into the world of spoof horror with both creepy and hilarious results.

Sergeant Bung (Harry H Corbett) and his blundering sidekick Constable Slobotham (Peter Butterworth) are investigating a series of mysterious disappearances of young women. When a young man (Jim Dale) swears that a mannequin in a shop window is his missing girlfriend, the resulting line of inquiry eventually leads the pair to the eerie mansion inhabited by Dr Watt (Kenneth Williams) and his beautiful sister Valeria (Fenella Fielding, right) as well as an assortment of other, curious entities...

Carry On Camping (1969)

Barbara WindsorWithout a doubt, Carry On Camping is one of the best and funniest of all the Carry On Films.

Sid Boggle (Sid James) and Bernie Lugg (Bernard Bresslaw) take their somewhat innocent girlfriends to the Paradise Campsite (mistaking it for a nudist camp that they saw in a film) in the hope that it will lower their inhibitions. What they find instead is a muddy field, devoid of all facilities bar a small wash-house. Their fellow campers, however, include a group of girls from "Chayste Place" Finishing School, among whom is Babs (Barbara Windsor, right,) the Potters on their annual camping holiday which Mr Potter (Terry Scott) always "loves" and of course the girls' school's responsible adults, Dr Soaper (Kenneth Williams) and the woman besotted with him, Miss Haggard (Hattie Jacques).

A whole host of comical episodes result from this mixed group's interactions, culminating when a group of hippies arrive to hold an all night rave in the next field.

Carry On Again Doctor (1969)

When Doctor Nookey (Jim Dale) falls foul of the administrators at the hospital where he works once too often, he is sent on a posting to a remote and extremely inhospitable tropical island. He meets Gladstone Screwer (Sid James) who introduces him to a remarkable slimming potion, made by the natives.

Nookey soon returns to Britain armed with a supply of this potion and sets up a clinic, achieving remarkable and virtually overnight success. But his former colleagues are soon investigating his activities and when Screwer turns up to pay a visit, confusion and hilarity soon reign.

Carry On Matron (1972)

Hattie Jacques rules with an iron rod at Finisham Maternity Hospital in what is effectively the title role of this movie. When Sid James and his inept gang of crooks muscle in, however, intent on securing a supply of birth control pills for sale overseas, slapstick humour abounds.

Carry On Abroad (1972)

The early days of the foreign package holiday sees the Carry On team on a weekend trip to Spain. The fun starts when they arrive at their hotel near the village of "Ells Bells," to find it still very much under construction...

Carry On Behind (1975)

Following a very similar theme to the earlier and hugely successful, "Carry on Camping," Carry On Behind is almost as funny as its predecessor. A rare event indeed that the same idea works a second time but Windsor Davies brings a fresh concept to proceedings as the married man away on ostensibly a "fishing" weekend, pursuing the young ladies on the site.
