Combine Legos with the Fun of Disney's Cars

This summer, Disney released a sequel to the popular Cars movie. The first movie came out in 2006, which is hard to believe, because my kids still love the movie (especially my little boy). Unlike many sequels that Disney releases, this one looks really good (then again, the Toy Story sequels were good too).

If you have a boy like mine, they like to play with some of their favorite movie characters (especially cars), like Lightning McQueen and Tow Mater. They might also like Legos. What can be more fun than combining your favorite Cars characters and Legos? Cars Legos make great ideas for birthday presents, or for spending allowance money on.

Take a look at some of the Cars Legos that are available right now. These are all Lego Duplo or similarly-sized Mega Bloks sets.

Mack's Road Trip

This 34 piece set is great for young builders that love the Cars movie. It comes with three cars: Lightning McQueen, Mack (the big truck), and Sheriff. Just like in the movie, Lightning McQueen can fit inside Mack. Your child can recreate the movie scene where McQueen and Mack have won their race and are headed towards the piston cup, or they can create their own adventures. In addition to the cars, children get a cactus, highway sign, and truck stop sign.

This set contains a small part that is not appropriate for children under 3. If you do get this set for one of the younger ones, please remove the small ball until they're older.

Tow Mater's Yard

Tow Mater is one of the most popular characters in the movie. This set comes with Tow Mater and Sheriff, along with a junk yard sign and an oil barrel, for a total of 16 pieces. There aren't a great deal of generic Duplo pieces in this set, so if your child doesn't already have a good set of blocks, you might want to get some to go along with this set.

Lightning McQueen

Lightning McQueen is one of the most popular characters from the movie. This 11 piece set features McQueen, a cactus, a checkered flag, and a couple of other Legos. If your child does not already own Duplo bricks, he or she might want a set of regular Duplo or Mega Blok pieces to go along with it.

The manufacturer says that this set comes with a small ball. If you are buying this for a child under age 3, please remove all tiny parts, as they could be a choking hazard.

Flo's Cafe

This set comes with three cars: Lightning McQueen (in his Radiator Springs garb with whitewall tires), Sally the Porsche, and Doc Hudson. Other than these cars, some of the highlights of the set include Flo's Cafe sign and a gas pump. This set has a total of 32 pieces, which allows for more loose bricks than some of the other Lego Cars sets.

Mega Bloks Piston Cup Race Set

This Mega Bloks Piston Cup race set comes with three cars: Lightning McQueen, King, and Doc Hudson. It comes with 64 pieces, and is recommended for children ages 3 and up. In addition to the cars, this set comes with the Piston Cup, a giant screen (well, it's Giant to the Lego people), and a racing ramp.

This set has been discontinued, as Disney currently holds their Cars building block contract with Lego.

Radiator Springs Mega Bloks Set

This 95 piece set comes with three cars: Lightning McQueen, Tow Mater, and Luigi. Your child can recreate some of the scenes from Radiator Springs in the movie Cars. There are some small pieces to this set, which is recommended for kids ages 3 and up.

Mega Bloks Cars Tipping Tractor

Remember the scene where Tow Mater and Lightning McQueen go out and tip tractors? Your child can recreate this scene with this 41-piece set. This set comes with three cars: Lightning McQueen, Tractor, and Frank the Combine. In addition to the three cars, this set comes with a cornfield, Radiator Springs sign, ramps, haystack, fence, and tree.

Mega Bloks Luigi's Garage

Luigi's GarageIt's not Mario, it's Luigi! And he has a garage! If your child loves Luigi, they'll really like this 26 piece Mega Bloks Luigi's Garage set that comes with the yellow Luigi. Your child can rebuild his garage and have a tire sale. It does not come with a great deal of loose blocks, so you might want to buy extra if you don't already have some.

Are Mega Bloks and Legos Compatible?

Question mark by 7rainsMega Bloks and Legos are fully compatible. My son received a Thomas and Friends Mega Bloks set for Christmas, and I was able to combine them with his Legos without a problem. There are different sizes of blocks that you need to be aware of though.

Mega Bloks Mini are the blocks that are compatible with Lego Duplo sets. The Cars themed toys pictured here are all Duplo or Mega Bloks Mini sized.

Mega Bloks Dinoco Stage

Cars Dinoco StageIf you want to get the Dinoco helicopter, the Mega Bloks Cars Dinoco Stage is the only set that you can get it with. King also comes in this 44-piece set. This is one of the Mega Bloks sets; since Disney now has a contract with Lego for their building blocks, this set will probably go up in price as the set becomes more rare.

Mega Bloks Buildable Mack

This is a really cool set. If your child likes Mack, they'll probably love this buildable Mack set, complete with a Lightning McQueen that fits inside. This set has 40 pieces, and has small parts that may not be appropriate for children under age 3.

Mega Bloks Gas Corner

Gas Corner with MaterThis Mega Bloks set comes with Mater and his gas station, for a total of 26 blocks. The Mega Bloks Gas Corner is an excellent choice for a child whose favorite car from the series is Mater. It's recommended for children ages 3 and up.

This set is different than Lego's Tow Mater's Yard, and has been discontinued. It has limited availability.
