Collecting the Autographs and Work of Cartoonists

America's Cartoonists

The autographs and drawings of cartoonists are nice additions to an autograph collection. All of us can relate to cartoons. Saturday mornings in front of the TV are fond memories for most baby boomers. Many of us turn to the comic strips before we read the front page of our newspaper. Many of our cultural icons are cartoon characters. Mickey Mouse and Bart Simpson. Superman, Batman and Spiderman. The donkey and elephant of the Democrats and Republicans. Even the modern image of Santa Claus was the work of a cartoonist.

Vintage Signed Material

Autograph collectors should search for vintage material to add a sense of history to their collection. I have a signed card from Thomas Nast dated February 10, 1874. Adding Nast to your collection gives you the creator of the Republican's elephant, the Democrat's donkey and the modern version of Santa Claus all in one autograph. A Thomas Nast autograph will cost in the range of $100 - $150. If you can find one, an original drawing will probably start at around $1,000.

Am I glad I stumbled across your lens! I'm a cartoonist with a ton of published original cartoons which appeared in a wide range of publications....from Good Housekeeping to Saturday Evening Post to Penthouse. I have been searching without much success to learn if there is a market for such materials. Among other things, I have several spreads (3- and 5-page) which were published in Penthouse and bear the pencilled monogram, "B"...Bob Guccione's okay for publication, in addition to printer's instructions and other markings. Might you be able to suggest the best way to market such materials to potential collectors? Thanks for any information you might be willing pass along.

OMG! I lens on my hobby! I love it! I collect comic book artist/authors autographs (I love signed comic books!), and also cartoon art autographed by voice actors. Most I've bought already autographed, but a few I've gotten signed by the person themselves, and you can tell which ones those are, because they always have my name (To Wendy) signed on those. I've also got photos and lp records signed by my fave singers.
