Stop The Loss - Casey Porter And Iraq Veterans Against The War (IVAW)

Casey Porter has been "stop-lossed", the U.S. Army's way of keeping soldiers enlisted longer than their contracted time of service. Eight months into his second Iraq deployment, Casey Porter, like many more soldiers and veterans, no longer believes in the justification of the Iraq war. Now he makes videos about the reality of life in Iraq for our military personnel.

This page shows his films of one soldier talking to other soldiers about their experiences in this war. Without sensationalism or fancy editing tricks, these war videos speak for themselves - about a "reality" overlooked too often by our mainstream media.

Stop-Loss Policy On Wikipedia

Stop-loss, in the United States military, is the involuntary extension of a service member's active duty service under the enlistment contract in order to retain them beyond their initial end of term of service (ETS) date. It also applies to the cessation of a permanent change of station (PCS) move for a member still in military service. Stop-loss was used immediately before and during the first Persian Gulf War. Since then, it has been used during American military deployments to Somalia, Haiti, Bosnia, Kosovo and during the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and the subsequent War on Terror.

The policy has been legally challenged several times, however federal courts have consistently found that military service members contractually agree that their term of service may be involuntarily extended.

"Deconstructed"

The latest film, Deconstructed, continues to show the realities of war. Featuring statements from former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, Former President Bill Clinton, The O'Reilly Factor host Bill O'Reilly, amongst many others. This is a look into the arrogance and lies of those who promoted, and continue to promote this war interlaced with combat footage straight from Iraq. Included are scenes of Soldiers not only speaking their minds, but speaking the truth about the continued occupation of Iraq. Also featured are some of the harsh realities of combat and in the midst of that combat, good Soldiers continuing to make the best out of it by helping their "adopted" child at their combat outpost. This is an honest look into the minds of Soldiers, and an honest look into their lives during a deployment. This is Deconstructed.

Quotes from the article in our Austin, Texas alternative weekly - "The Austin Chronicle":

Using a $150 off-the-shelf camcorder, a laptop, some editing software, and a YouTube account, Porter has created short documentaries to show to his viewers the raw, unvarnished truth. "There might be music, and I might have some flair in my videos, but they're not getting a government-sanctioned version," he said.

"I had some misgivings about the war, but I didn't question whether I believed in the fight. I put it on the back burner, like most Americans. But almost immediately I realized, in basic training, I had made a mistake."

"There's no reconstruction going on at the level they show you," he explained. "The soldier's mission is to survive. Not to win the fight, not to fight the enemy that is the main threat to the United States, but to simply survive. You're sent on these missions that don't make any sense, you're patrolling these roads that you don't care about, and the people on that road really don't want you there."

Please Donate Toward Proper Head Gear For Our Troops

The military bureaucracy is fatally slow!

Operation Helmet is a 100% volunteer, non-partisan, charitable organization that provides helmet upgrade kits free of charge to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as to those ordered to deploy in the near future.

We at Squidoo passionately believe in creating new ways to support good causes online. By making a donation to Operation Helmet from this page, you are sending money directly to that organization, in whatever amount you want. We don't touch it. We don't even see it. The author of this page doesn't either. And if you made it this far, thanks for caring.

It just seems like such an injustice and a gross use of power by our government. The small print is always passed on by. I hope this is something that the new administration will see fit to eradicate and give our troops and their families some sense of peace once their tour of service is up. It just doesn't seem fair to take advantage of their patriotism in that way.

If you just keep sending the same guys back you don't have to draft anybody. If you don't go out and draft anyone then the rest of us keep quiet...it doesn't affect us directly. Their lives are being stolen from them. *****'s me off. You're right, most people don't know about the realities of war...but what really concerns me is that so many people don't APPEAR to care...as long as they are sitting comfy.
