James Bond Casino Royale Blu-ray Movie Review
Ranked #14,120 in Entertainment, #172,659 overall
Daniel Craig as James Bond in Casino Royale
James Bond fans know Casino Royale, based as it is on Ian Fleming's novel that introduced Agent 007 into a Cold War age. It is possibly the most brutal and exciting James Bond film since Sean Connery's time in Her Majesty's Secret Service.
Casino Royale placed at the top of Sound & Vision's July/August 2008 list of the best blu-ray movies. Sound and Vision said that that this film had "stunning sound and picture quality" which made Bond's return even more thrilling and placed it on the top of their list at that time!
This 2006 Sony Pictures Home Entertainment blu-ray disc is still a strong blu-ray movie, scoring a solid 4.5 out of 5 from Blu-ray.com and a 'Recommended' from High-Def Digest.

Casino Royale Plot Summary
Casino Royale is a successful relaunch of the James Brond franchise. The story is based on the book that introduced Agent 007 and is an extremely exciting film.
Daniel Craig's bond is slightly different. Amazon calls his Bond 'galvanizing.' I'd agree. This Bond is also of course suave, reckless and egotistical.
In this film, Bond travels to many locales including Uganda, Madagascar, the Bahamas and Montenegro where he goes against his enemy in a poker game. Naturally, he falls in love with a character played by Eva Green.
Casino Royale includes references to the existing franchise including the Astin-Martin, which he wins, and the martini for which he claims not to give a damn about how it is prepared. Moneypenny and Q are missing but Judi Dench is not. (I love Judi Dench in just about everything I have ever seen her in.) She plays M.
Lots of action, violence and (be warned) one VERY painful torture scene which is excruciating both for Bond and for the movie viewer.

Age Recommendation for Casino Royale
Or, is Casino Royale appropriate for children?
Casino Royale is rated PG-13 based on violence, sexual content and nudity. The violence includes a very difficult torture scene as well as other references to torture and the suggestion of a suicide. There is also, of course, the presence of alcohol, foul language, sexual references and moments with nudity. Casino Royale is not appropriate for children and I am not sure I would have considered this film appropriate for my sons when they were 13.
Casino Royale Blu-ray Movie Reviews
- Casino Royale (2006) Blu-ray Review by High-Def Digest
- High-Def Digest gives Casino Royale a bit of a mixed review. It praises the story saying that this Bond story restored the sense of urgency and consequence to the story. It, however, gives the blu-ray format a bit of a mixed review saying that the soundtrack is excellent and holds up to blu-ray; that they liked the transfer to blu-ray (rather than loving it); and that they enjoyed the extras. They finish by saying that, if you are a fan of James Bond, Casino Royale is a must-watch in high definition.
- Casino Royale Blu-ray Movie Review by DVD Talk Review
- DVD Talk Review says that Casino Royale is a terrific part of the James Bond franchise and that the blu-ray features excellent picture and sound and some interesting supplements. Highly recommended.
- Casino Royale: Blu-Ray Disc Review by Chris Boylan on BigPictureBigSound
- Mr. Boylan's final thoughts on Casino Royale include calling it a stunning visual and audio at home. He even goes so far as to say that the experience of this movie may be better than that at your home theatre. I expect that is why this movie made Sound and Vision Magazine's list.

Illustrated here is the American first edition of Ian Fleming's Casino Royale, which I believe would be a wonderful gift idea for a James Bond collector. The older books are simply much more attractive than the new versions.
